I am a bit late in commenting on this -- many things have conspired to keep me from posting as much as I'd like to the last few days -- but I did think it important to note that Moussaoui's change of heart is not due to cowardice, as many have assumed. I believe it is much more likely that the life sentence made Moussaoui realize that our system is easier to manipulate than he thought, and that he could have gotten a lighter sentence or even won acquittal if he tried. So he tried again.

Too late, the judge says.U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema quickly rejected a motion the confessed al-Qaida conspirator filed Monday to withdraw his guilty plea and get a new trial.
In his motion, Moussaoui said he lied on the witness stand March 27 when he reversed four years of denials and claimed he was to have hijacked a fifth jetliner on Sept. 11, 2001, and crashed it into the White House, "even though I knew that was a complete fabrication."
The 37-year-old Frenchman blamed his behavior on the effects of solitary confinement, his inability to get a Muslim lawyer and his misunderstanding of the U.S. justice system.
Moussaoui said he was "extremely surprised" by his life sentence by a federal court jury last week.
"I had thought I would be sentenced to death based on the emotions and anger toward me for the deaths on Sept. 11," he explained in an affidavit. "But after reviewing the jury verdict and reading how the jurors set aside their emotions and disgust for me and focused on the law and the evidence ... I now see that it is possible that I can receive a fair trial even with Americans as jurors."
Supermax got to him already. I sometimes think it was good. Sometimes I think vermin should be exterminated immediately and not fed.
Zacarias Moussaoui did get a fair trial, if I helped to kill a bunch of people I would be sentenced to death, but because Zacarias is Muslim he got more then a fair trail, just like how OJ Simpson got away with murder because he was rich and California wasn't able to survive another race riot. I bet if Zacarias was acquitted Muslims would be celebrating in the streets just like how OJ fans were celebrating when he got acquitted.
I hope one day Muslims will understand "to turn the other cheek" they get off with easy punishments in the west, but westerns get stoned, hanged, or chopped up in the Middle East.
In the UK, at the trial of rabid cleric El-Faisal, Jews and Hindus were excluded from the Jury at the request of the defence counsel. In an act of craven Dhimmitude, the prosecution agreed to this.
Now excluding Jews from public life was acceptable in Nazi Germany, but I'm ashamed it's now acceptable in the UK.

True, he's manipulative, and clearly out to mess with the system, and with anyone who will listen-- he did claim he "won" on the life sentence, prior to this reversal.
But I suspect he saw the spotlight fading, and realized the finality of the silence and obscurity that awaits him at the supermax, and wanted at least to delay the inevitable for another news story or two.

Gotta disagree with Robert on this one. I think the creature realizes he is about to be locked away incommunicado, with no means of feeding his enormous ego, and with no possibility of kept on the MSM front pages, with celebrity status, for the next 5 or 10 or 15 years through interminable legal games leading up to, in the worst case, his execution and "martyr" status. No, I think it finally sunk in that he is to be locked away in an unpleasant environment and then, horror of horrors, forgotten about. The bastard doesn't like that.

Robert, I'm with Infidel 33. With this twist. Moussaoui miscalculated due to the things that he was told by his imans in France. May be he wanted death, maybe not. But one thing is for sure, he'll never walk this side of a prison ever again.
And besides, he never should've been tried in a court of law anyway. A military court not only would've given him death, but he would've been muzzled and shackled. Preventing him from making any kind of statements of victory and raising his fists in the air in mock victory.

Moussaoui's appeal is a cynical attempt to manipulate the system and continue the media circus, that comes right out of AQ playbook.It doesn't matter whether he gets life, death, acquittal or 6 months what matters is the MSM attention.Unfortunately for Moussaoui he miscalculated. He's heading for Supermax where he'll join Richard Reid, The Blind Shiek, Ramsey Youssef, The Unabomber and Terry Nichols in 23 hour lockdown. When was the last time you read or heard anything about those prisoners?
He had his trial. The show ended, and when he found out he'd be caged up for being the animal that he is, now he wants a new trial.
He should have been tried in a military tribunal, convicted, and then executed.

I think Mousaoui knows that his faith is sealed one way or the other,and he justs tries to get another trial,more money wasted ,more propaganda in the media,more ridicule of our legal system,more exposing our weakness and lack of determination in the face of evil.
Unfortunately, while Moussoui is still breathing, there is always the chance that he will be useful later to the Jihadist cause, especially if our leaders continue to stick their heads in the sand, turn a blind eye to these people continuiing to come into our country in droves and proliferating, as the native born population continues to decline. Sure, he'll be locked up for a while but once there are enough Muslims to vote for Muslim leadership, he'll be let out of prison to make more mischief and kill more non-muslims.
