Report: Ahmadinejad sends letter to pope

Hirsi Ali has been offered a job by the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative Washington-based think tank, and according to media reports had been in negotiations with two other U.S. institutes.

Any chance we might see Ms. Ali authoring an article or two for JW/DW in the future? I know she's got her own blog, and she'll be busy unpacking, and settling in to her new job, for a while.

Anyways, best wishes to her, I think she'll find the U.S. agreeable and welcoming. Sorry Netherlands, she's ours to treasure now.

As for the Byzantine empire, while they lost the Middle East, they didn't lose Constantinople until the Ottomans arrived. That took quite a while.

I cant believe I'm saying this, but if only President Bush was like Shah Yazdgird III of Persia (in terms of attitude, not misfortune), we wouldn't be in this predicament.

Incidentally, I followed the Wikipedia links provided, and it's amazing how much they've bought into the Islamic propaganda that Yazdgird's daughter Shahr Bano married Husayn. Leave it to those rapists to claim conquests of their enemy womenfolk, such as Persian princesses.

I used to always wonder how the mighty Sassanid empire folded that easily, and after seeing where their capital Ctesiphon was located - 20 miles South East of Baghdad, that explains why. Had Yazdgird been based in Persepolis or Pasargadae, the Persians would have had the strategic depth to defeat the Arabs. The fact that they didn't caused the bloodbath in the name of Islam.
