Another Terrorist Attack Coming Soon?

"These individuals are often hiding in plain sight in cities like Torrance and now Toledo." Of course they are. For even though one man was turned in when he sought help in a mosque, the Canada arrests show that all too many other jihadists are not turned in even by fellow Muslims who reject their views. Since the American Muslim community has done nothing large-scale to expel jihadists from their ranks and teach against the jihad ideology, it is entirely reasonable to expect that jihadists are inside that community, planning attacks. From CBS, with thanks to Sam:

(CBS) U.S. officials believe Canadian arrests over the weekend and three recent domestic incidents in the United States are evidence the U.S. will soon be hit again by a terrorist attack. Privately, they say, they'd be surprised if it didn't come by the end of the year, reports CBS News correspondent Jim Stewart in a CBS News exclusive.

The first of the domestic incidents, all of which drew little attention at the time, began with the holdup of a string of Torrance, Calif. gas stations last summer. Muslim converts who bonded together in prison planned to use the robberies to finance attacks on 20 Army recruiting stations.

Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton admits they stumbled on the plot during a search.

"Make no mistake about it," Bratton said. "We dodged a bullet here — perhaps many bullets."

Police in Toledo, Ohio, busted another cell in February. This one consisted of three men training to attack U.S. forces overseas. Once again, luck played a role. When they tried to enlist someone in their mosque to help, he turned them in.

That's good. We need to see much more of that.

"These individuals are often hiding in plain sight in cities like Torrance and now Toledo," says John Pistole, a FBI deputy director.

Two months ago, a pair of Atlanta men, one a Georgia Tech engineering student, were arrested not long after communicating by e-mail with two of the suspects arrested in Canada over the weekend. The Atlanta men are charged with videotaping domestic targets, including the U.S. Capitol and the World Bank.

Toledo in particular is uniquely situated in the geographical center of what one could call the Rust Belt Jihad. The Plain Dealer ran a Sunday feature in May detailing the contacts Marwan Othman El-Hindi, arrested in February, had from Syracuse to Chicago, and in between, Detroit and Toronto.

Why an 8-page article such as this has been reposted in the "Kids News" section, I'm not sure, but here's the link:

Interesting bit about ex-con imams and volunteers at the Toledo Correctional Institute as well, on page 6 of the article.

Hindi is a unique case in having such wide personal connections, but taken together with cases in Columbus (e.g., Ayman Faris), and the Lackawanna Six (Lackawanna being near Buffalo), there's just something about the Rust Belt. And Toledo is right in the center, not too large, and not too small-- an ideal crossroads. One hopes that law enforcement has taken note, as well.

This doesn't make any sense. Aren't we spending $200 million / day in Iraq to fight the terrorists there, not here? Why don't they keep to the script?

I'm sure they're all over the US, except this particular cell were individuals working on their own. The plot that concerns me most is the one Bin Laden keeps referring to in his messages. That's the big one we need to be most aware of, as I'm sure it will cause the most casualties and be significant in its destruction. Those cells are more quiet, acting in conjunction with Al Qaeda.

"When they tried to enlist someone in their mosque to help, he turned them in." Its nice to have a reminder that there is such a thing as a "Muslim American" (or maybe he/she just wasn't a very good Muslim?) I would like to be more excited about this, but the sad fact is that this is just one little point of light in a sea of darkness with respect to what seems to be going on in the Muslim community in the west. Still, its important to give credit where credit is due, and I definately think it is due in this case. Turning those guys in takes some balls. If it was found out who turned them in, this individual risks not only being shunned, but the individuals neck will also be at stake. Its like the mafia in many ways. You can get in, but getting out can be hazardous to ones health.

More and more I'm beginning to think that Michelle Malkin is right in her book, "In Defense of Internment, The case for Racial Profiling in World War II and the war on terror"http://michellemalkin.com/books.htm. Though it may be distasteful in this PC, multicultural world of the 20th Century after the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII, the internal threat to America is much, much greater than that which President Roosevelt was dealing with. In fact there existed no evidence whatsoever that Japanese Americans where planning any attacks within the US during WWII. Like Chief Bratton of the LAPD says; "we dodged a bullet on one threat they uncovered. But how much longer can we keep that up? Sooner or later some of these terrorists from so-called sleeper cells are going to reach their intended targets in the US and Canada.

The only thing distasteful to me will be when we lose more Americans to an enemy that doesn't worry about playing by any rules. I agree with you -- it's time we started doing the necessary actions and cease worrying so much about how they will be viewed by the doves among us and the apathetic and often hateful foreigners that surround us. Do we think for a minute that we do not have enemies both within and without that cloak themselves in smiles and handshakes?

Strong nations survive and sometimes strength requires tough choices.

If internment camps bother people, I've already posted my suggestion: deportation. But perhaps Canada will not be so quick to take our Muslims now after recent events? If they aren't, then indeed there might be a sign that the Western world is finally catching on to the truth.

Perhaps we can build a man-made island somewhere out of all our trash heaps and plant the Religion of Peace-mongers on that and let them flourish in the sun and surf, far from the shores of any nation that can fall victim to their "moral" values.

I would alter the wording of one of Robert's comments slightly (my alteration in bold):

"the Canada arrests show that all too many other jihadists are not turned in even by fellow Muslims who claim to reject their views."

I came to the same conclusion three years ago. It's a perfectly rational and humane conclusion. Only irrational PC inertia and theoretical fears of an "ethical slippery slope" perversely ungrounded in the facts (e.g., that after the USA in fact did this during WWII, the USA continue to progress and become socially and ethically better, not worse) will prevent us from taking this step and others in the same ballpark. And of course the new profiling will not be solely by race, but by ideology (the ideology of Islam). But don't kid yourselves: were we to cast out a rationally generalized net to profile Muslims, probably more than 90% of those reasonably included would be non-Whites. To maintain otherwise is naive at best, cleverly disingenuous at worst.

Not "deportation" but repatriation", since it will sound more p.c. and friendly.

And not "profiling" but militancy status.

In effect: if they become too violent, then repatriate them to a land where Sharia Law is in effect, since that is their desired goal.

And let their brothers in Mohammad wrestle with them.

While we get back to concerning outselves with the infinite future and not the endless 7th century.

Can somebody get info on what happened to the muslim who betrayed another muslim ? If his identity becomes known, he suffers the fate of the infidels.

TV

While internment could be a thorny political issue given that it's a stick Republicans like to beat Dems with when charged with racism, I think this is a non-starter, and an alternative should be used - Shariah reversed.

We should take Shariah law, be it from the Quran, Ahadith & all their accessory texts, and then flip the terms "believers" & "infidels". Within the world of infidels, keep our own laws as they are (e.g. don't re-introduce gender discrimination among Infidels), but for Muslims, have the inverted Shariah laws, such as the testimony of 1 infidel is equivalent to the testimony of 2 Muslims, a Muslim man has only half the inheritance rights and testimony rights as a Muslim women, and Infidels have rights that trump both. Any Infidel who apostatizes i.e. converts to Islam would be executed (they are free to move in between Infidel religions, but not into Islam), Muslim girls can marry Infidel men, but not vice versa.

I am ambivalent as to whether "blood-money" should be introduced as well, such as having monetary penalties that would get criminals off the hook if they murder Muslims - again, different rates for Muslim men and women, but have usual penalties for murder where Infidels are involved. Maybe we could avoid introducing it at first, and only introduce it if the above measures do not drive at least 90% of Muslims in dar-ul-Harb back to the rocks out of which they crawled from.

Arjun-- thankfully, all indications thus far are that the informant in the Toledo case is still alive and well.

Backstory on him on page 7 of the article I linked to above:
