D.C. Watson unmasks some less-than-upfront statements from recent news:
Recently, Sheik Hamza Yusuf, a Muslim cleric in the United States, was part of a speaking engagement at a University of Houston event. In what should come as no surprise, he seems to have been less than forthright about the violence in the Qur'an, cloaking its actual words in a nice, neat package of tolerance and moderate Islam.From the New York Times story about him and other "moderate Muslims":
Mr. Yusuf told the audience in Houston to beware of "fanatics" who pluck Islamic scripture out of context and say, "We're going to tell you what God says on every single issue." "That's not Islam," Mr. Yusuf said. "That's psychopathy."He asked the audience to pray for the victims of kidnappers in Iraq, saying that kidnapping is just as bad as American bombings in which the military dismisses the civilians killed as "collateral damage."
"They're both sinister, as far as I'm concerned," he said. "One is efficient, the other is pathetic."...
Perhaps Mr. Yusuf should come clean and admit that what is truly pathetic is the fact that these “brave mujahadeen” find it acceptable to hide behind innocent women and children. And about that worn out excuse that the Qur’an is being taken “out of context”….
The passages in the Qur’an that call Muslims to violence are obviously and certainly understandable, even for the simplest of people. There is nothing being taken out of context in this scripture. Exactly how “out of context” can any of the following phrases be taken?
“Slay the idolaters” Qur’an 9:5
“The spoils of war belong to Allah and his messenger” Qur’an 8:1
“I will cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers” Qur’an 8:12
“You will soon be invited to fight against a nation of mighty prowess. Fight them until they submit” Qur’an 48:16
“Strike off their heads” Qur’an 8:12
“Besiege them” Qur’an 9:5
“Strike off every fingertip of them” Qur’an 8:12
“Fight with them until there is no more persecution and religion should be only for Allah” Qur’an 8:39
“Fight those who do not believe in Allah” Qur’an 9:29
“Urge the believers to war” Qur’an 8:65
“Until they pay the tax, acknowledge superiority, and are in a state of subjection” Qur’an 9.29
“Permission to fight is given to those upon whom war is made because they are oppressed” Qur’an 22:39
“Take then captives” Qur’an 9:5
“So when you battle the unbelievers, then smite their necks until you have overcome them, and then make them prisoners” Qur’an 47:4
“Fighting is enjoined on you, and it is an object of dislike to you; and it may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you” Qur’an 22:16
“The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and his messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is that they should be killed or crucified, or their hands and feet should be cut off on opposite sides, or they should be imprisoned” Qur’an 5:33
“Lie in wait for them in every ambush” Qur’an 9:5
These are but a few samples of “peace and tolerance” that can be found in not one, not two, but in over 160 verses spread throughout the pages of the “Noble” Qur’an.
In the same story, another imam, Ziad Shakir, says this:"Every Muslim who is honest would say, I would like to see America become a Muslim country." "I think it would help people, and if I didn't believe that, I wouldn't be a Muslim. Because Islam helped me as a person, and it's helped a lot of people in my community."A message for all of the Islamists living among us in the United States who haven’t yet been arrested, convicted, or deported (as the arrests continue): We as Americans are about to celebrate our 230th year of independence and freedom. The American Revolution was sparked by several issues, with the most important issue being Liberty.
Islam and Shari’ah law offer no liberty. They offer no equality, and they offer no alternative thought. Islamic law is centuries behind modern times, and goes against the grain of freedom, equality, and democracy, and it has no place anywhere in the United States or its territories.
Islamists would be wise to understand that Muhammad cannot help them establish an Islamic theocracy here. Once we, the people, weed out some of our more knuckle headed elected officials who have fallen for the "religion of peace" facade, as more and more Americans have been, and continue to be awakened to the Islamist agenda, and as the increasingly growing anti-Islamic jihad movement continues to gain momentum, Islamists will have nowhere to go but back to their place of origin in the sand, and Americans will continue to celebrate being the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Islamism doesn't mix in our melting pot, so make the most of the opportunity and take it somewhere else.

Hear, hear. We are winning. Americans and even those muddleheaded Europeans, even the French, are soul-searching. The end of our foolish romance with Arabic Submission in the west will also probably be the death-knell of multiculturalist dogma (but not tolerance or appreciation for all the good in other cultures), "white" guilt, and the soft bigotry of low expectations. I really like that one, and it's actually a Bushism. Will the wonders never cease?
Our great advantage is the Islamic canon itself. They can run from their religion, but they can't hide the truth about it from infidels much longer. I believe we are witnessing the turning point where Islam's latest, and probably last, advance turns into a rout. Time to start dropping Bibles on Saudi Arabia. I sincerely believe that deep inside every Muslim there resides a free human being who is sick of "Submission".

Thanks to the internet and what is happening in the news, the truth about Islam is coming out. The folks who say things different about Islam are looking like fools more and more each day. This could be the begining of the end of Islam in the making.
Funny thing about such 'clerics' advocating the 'ROP' is, they go wild pretty fast. It would not take someone of Mr. Spencer's calibre to rile this one. Just one of our more informed posters like Foehammer could do it in 10 minutes flat. By just stating the history of islamic aggression on lands since its inception, starting from the battles intitiated by muhammad himself. These nutjobs are not capable of intelligent debate, and pretty soon they start screaming. It all comes down to this 'my religion is peaceful and you better believe it or I will kill you.'

I see no real evidence, outside of the comfortingly deceptive archipelagos of like-minded communities on the Net, that "we are winning" the important War of Ideas. So far, it seems we are still losing the War of Ideas. Our eventual victory will not be helped by comforting ourselves with premature illusions that ignore the twin mountains of PC naivete and PC zeal.
And yet our guilt ridden leftists' still cannot, or refuse to see or even pay attention to all those Trojan Horses made of glass that continue to roll through our American cities.
We still have many pandering politicians, like (been there to long) Rep. John Conyers of my home state of Michigan who tried to offer up a bill in congress that was designed to crush any criticism of the religion of Islam last year. Did he ever take a few hours and simply read some of the tenants of the Quran? I doubt it.
And yet as D.C.points out; they are clearly and easily understood as well as the nose on your face.
They also hear that common deceptive (taquiya) comment that is bantered around by Islamic clerics when these militant surahs are presented in argument. That they are misunderstood in translation and they can only be appreciated if they are read in Arabic, never mind that over 85 PCT. of the worlds Muslims do not speak or read Arabic.

What's pathetic is Hamza's moral equivalence. There is a big, big difference between kidnapping and murdering civilians for being "collaborators" whose "crime", if not simply being the wrong kind of "Muslim" is to have cooperated with representatives of an elected government or the Coalition forces who liberated Iraq from the rule of a criminal gang and continue to be present at the request of that elected government and the unintended killing of civilians in the process of either capturing or killing the likes of Zarqawi, especially as the Zarqawis of the world use civilians as human shields.
The truely pathetic result of this dribble is that quite a few marshmellows will actually buy into his smoke and mirrors.
He's right about one thing, though: bombings are very efficient (ask Zarkowi), and cowardly kidnapping/tortures are remarkably pathetic.
Can't we just deal with islam for what it is (religion of ignorance, intolerance and hate) and use some N. Korean nukes to put the 7th century to rest once and for all?

Why do you think this? Isn't that the same kind of deep (and "sincere") belief that causes George Bush to be certain that "all people want freeedom"?
They don't. Many people love to be part of a group, a group that gives them a senes of belonging that they cannot find elsewhere, and that they apparently need. Many like the Total Regulation of Life -- look at all those Muslims, living in the free Western world, writing in to "Ask Mr. Fatwa" or a thousand other such sites to find out what it is they should or should not be doing. Many people are so greedy for a Total Explanation of the Universe that they will cling to whatever is offered, or go off on a Spiritual Search to find that damn Total Explanation that they somehow misplaced, and that they really need to find, and soon.
Most people, all over the place, are naturally primitive. Civilization developed slowly; "let's do it" became "here's a sonnet-cycle I wrote for you" and so on, until we are now back to "let's do it." And so on. There are lapses, gaps, re-lapses. Mass democracy, the collapse of standards, and usefulness, in the teaching of literature and history, the disappearance of a self-assured cultural elite (not to be confused with the self-assured financial elite)all play their insidious role.
I'd reverse your formula:

Yes I have read the article you have posted. With the internet having become so widespread, any effort from the US Government such as Sen. Clinton could be greeted with opposition to any governmental involvement, so much has the internet made a big impact on US society. Any major changes to the internet will become DOA.

The EU wants to actually wrest control of the internet from America, and that'll be far worse for freedom of speech than any US regulation. I like the phrase 'white guilt' another poster used. Turkey's public broadcaster has denied reports that it has banned the popular Walt Disney cartoon "Winnie the Pooh" because one of the main characters in the show is a piglet.
Turkish Radio and Television (TRT) said late Saturday media reports that "Winnie the Pooh" and other cartoons featuring pigs had been barred "are untrue and aim to discredit the institution".

What did this unaccountable class do with their unprecedented primacy after WW2? Just as billions flowed into the undeserving coffers of Arabs, inflaming their heinous fantasies of supremacy -- trillions of public dollars have flooded into Academia -- What has been the result? Six decades of sometimes frenzied revulsion and cultural violence towards the West by the "self-assured cultural elite". These intellectual Brahmins set about the annihilation of the society that gave them breath and life, sustenance and complete freedom -- Why? For whatever reason they adjudged that society to be corrupt and false and deplorable -- they adjudged that culture to be one worthy of dismemberment and replacement. Those same latter day "self-assured cultural elite" which Mr. Fitzgerald extolls set about concocting poisons and schemes to defame our society and hatched plots to supplant it with one of their own devising. Now we see the results of their blunders. This arrogant class has done more to weaken our culture internally than any external enemy ever has done. They've squandered and betrayed their legacy. They arrogated their pulpits of reason and turned them into Megaphones for Zealots to address pet peeves.
This is the outcome of every venture which lavishes wealth and privilege on those who supposedly know better than the rest. This is the result of giving vast sums of money to those who haven't quite earned it. They always get carried away with their schemes and their quackery.
If one accepts the premise that we're decadent and decaying, it wasn't the "Snoop Doggy Doggs" and the "Fitty Cents" and the "Jerry Springers" who have shoved us into the gutter -- they are only the symptoms of decay, such as it is. Mr. Fitzgerald's "pepes" -- those "self-assured cultural elite" who set about with scalpels, chisels, and sledge hammers to dismantle and obliterate the traceries of Western Civilization -- they are the vandals who created the voids we see today. Into that breach pours the flotsam of their destruction. The flotsam isn't responsible for the calamity, though their untethered bashings-about help to augment the damage done.
By the way, human society has always been about "let's do it". The history of any epoch is created partially by whoever owns the megaphones during that epoch, and then, more lastingly, by The Historians who weave the narrative after the fact. Had there been megaphones available to the massive majority of humans during all of the antique periods Mr. Fitzgerald holds up as virtuous, (and now were there historians interested in telling their stories unadorned), we'd understand that the human animal has not changed much at all over the millenia.
But it isn't a zero sum game. I prefer my own time -- my own culture -- I like the unprecedented freedoms and choices and information available today -- and I deplore ALL of the anti-democratic forces now bearing down on this system, flawed as it is.
History also tells us how the megaphones eventually get taken from the malpracticers. We've seen how they lose their voices and then their heads. It's always folly to ignore the fact when your message has no traction among the populace. It's ultimately THEY who must be persuaded in the end of the merits or demerits to any idea. Blaming them for a lack of traction is utterly futile. For the first time in history the megaphones are more evenly distributed than ever before, and one may either shout even louder above the din to be heard (the Ann Coulters of the world unite ... ), or one must choose to take much greater care in the formulations put forward to the People.
