But very few of the Jewish soldiers taken alive by the Arab enemy (save when they were soldiers in the Arab Legion of Jordan, that is trained by British officers (such as John Glubb -- Glubb Pasha -- and Alec Kirkbride, not to do what came naturally to them to do) remained alive. This isn't the first time troops have been taken and it wont be that last time. So why doesnt the US Military implement microchips for tracking its soldiers in the even they are taken?

I'll leave it up to the Army to find out how to perfect and secure the tecnology so it can't be used against US troops, but really...isnt it due time for something like this?

I declare "The Geneva Convention(s) " to be DEAD or DOA.

Abby, I saw that article too. The story came out, not because the media uncovered it, nor because the military reported it (they simply called it an "ambush"), but because the mother of one of the dead soldiers kept pressing for the truth. It happened in June 2004, two years later we are hearing about what really happened. We all seem to be in her position, of fighting the media to find out what is actually going on, what is not being reported, not being said.

A quote from the mother, Nadia McCaffrey:

I really want this story to come out; I want people to know what happened to my son. There is no doubt to me that this (ambushes by attached Iraqi units) is still happening to soldiers today, but our chain of command is awfully reckless; they don't seem to give a damn about what's happening to soldiers.

The military "chain of command" does not make policy decisions, they follow them. I have no doubt that any U.S. officer who refused a direct order from the Commander in Chief or Secretary of Defense to have U.S. soldiers to go out on patrol with Iraqi soldiers would be immediately dishonorably discharged. But it seems to me that a career is not worth much, if it means needlessly allowing the deaths of U.S. soldiers. Our soldiers should not be put in the position of watching the person who is supposed to be watching their back.

Consider at least 150 million Americans, 30 million British, and some 300 million Europeans (i.e., roughly 50% of total populations of the West), to be beyond reach then, because I'm telling you, they remain hopelessly naive and unwilling to directly condemn Islam for the global mountain of data (all the Muslim atrocities and aggressions around the world) which we jihad watchers notice.

As long as Western people, as a matter of common sociopolitical consensus, do not directly and totally condemn Islam, we will remain socially and politically and militarily impaired in our self-defense against this enemy. All permutations short of total condemnation of Islam will continually nourish the detachment of Islam from the "bad apples".

Meanwhile, thousands, hundreds of thousands, soon perhaps millions of "bad apples" will be pullulating from globally and unpredictably disparate locales to plot and execute various forms of terror (from personal jihads on up to sophisticated commando operations that could involve anything from poisoning water supplies to planting & disseminating biological or chemical toxins, to some delivery of a dirty bomb) -- and all these "bad apples" will continue to be conceptually detached from the Islam that is directly inspiring and nourishing their murderous zeal. Only when the majority of people think and speak like jihad watchers, and the whitewashers of Islam become the small minority that jihad watchers are now, will we begin to be truly waging -- as opposed to dreaming -- an effective self-defense.

The only way to handle this is to send our Delta boys to Egypt and pick up two of Muhajihr's relatives and do to them exactly what was done to the captured soldiers. After that, every time there is an Al Qaeda attack in Iraq, kill another of his relatives. He'll get the message real quick. I think after the first killing and torture of his relatives, he would be afraid to kill again. Unfortunately, Bush would never get the balls to follow this thru, just like Fallujah two years ago when they tore apart those former Special Ops contractors and nothing was done, which in turn emboldened Al Qaeda and Zarqawi who wasn't killed until two years later with help from Jordanian Intelligence. We'll never win this war or get out of Iraq until we employ harsher measures taking the gloves off and giving the terrorists a taste of their own warfare. Muhajihr has become emboldened further after mutilating our soldiers, and has now taken 60-100 Shiites hostage. I'm even more pissed off that there is no outrage from mainstream media, Americans, or human rights organizations at the brutality in which our soldiers were killed and tortured by gouging out their eyes, cutting out their hearts, cutting off their genitalia, shooting them in the head, mangling their limbs and finally severing their heads. This is what they went thru for several days while we were all sitting comfortably in our homes with our friends, family, etc. I am just heartsick over this. We all need to write Bush until he does something and not let it go like he did Fallujah in 2004.

One of the goals of the Geneva Convention is to protect your own troops. If you abuse the enemies' soldiers, then they will have incentive to abuse your soldiers.

But the jihadists don't follow the Geneva Convention. They torture and then kill U.S., Israeli, and other prisoners, military and civilian alike. So, what motivation do we have to follow the Geneva Convention? Why are we putting our soldiers on trial for putting panties on the head of prisoners, or letting dogs bark at them, when they return our soldiers diced into little pieces? I'm not for torturing civilians, but I am very sick of hearing moral equivalency arguments. Not only is their culture different from ours, it is incomprehensible to us, if the reality were ever presented accurately to us.

I'd agree that the poster ewha1's manner was confrontational, but I don't disagree with the notion that strategy is more important than tactics. And in the end, strategy is more a political than a military matter. The current U.S. army is the most formidable the world has ever seen, but it needs to be pursuing sensible objectives. Robert and Hugh have frequently questioned President Bush's strategy; and if his objectives are ill-thought out then they're right to do so.

As for the German way of war, I thought everyone had studied it and that was the problem - at least some have said so:

This seems to be the reverse of what the poster was saying. "The German Way of War" (and people like Eric von Manstein) has been of interest because it was tactically - operationally - effective. But Germany came unstuck twice in a really big way, because it lacked a realistic strategic vision and, hence, overreached itself.

Yojimbo - very good points -- I'm not well read in Military Strategy, but this poster isn't as interested in fighting Jihad, as he is probably in seeing the West veer towards Nazism, and as an adjunct thereby possibly stemming the Jihad. As such, it's no choice at all, though I think it points to the nub of the matter haunting the West: What lengths are we willing to go to in order to defend ourselves from this particular supremacist enemy? So far, we're not willing to go to very far -- no identification of the modalities and the mechanisms of his Jihad -- where we are fighting, lawyers on the battlefield acting as advocates for the enemy's rights -- little effort by politicians to unite under a single policy -- indictments and shackles slapped on our brave young men while engaged in a vicious combat of annihilation -- or effete intellectuals while sometimes advocating well for the anti-Jihad, continue taking pages out of MoveOn.org and talking points from George Soros, or La Monde to withdraw from Iraq prematurely, or to tax us for funding more socialist boondoggles. This particular enemy probably requires a single minded purpose -- one which eludes us so far. I argue that the equation must be simple: Islam is bad for us. We don't want it here.

Hopefully we'll sort it out, and not be mutilated in the process, or discover there's nothing to defend once we come to sufficient consensus to actually be effective.

Thinking about overreach is important. A friend in military intelligence says that their eyes were gouged out and their male organs were cut off and shoved in their mouths before their throats were slit.
