Syria expresses interest in buying weapons from Iran

From the Jerusalem Post:

Syria has expressed interest in purchasing weapons from Iran, including scud and anti-aircraft missiles, rocket launchers, Russian T-27 tanks, and even fighter planes. Meanwhile, Syrian Defense Minister Gen. Hassan Turkemani signed a mutual cooperation deal on Thursday with his Iranian counterpart General Mustafa Muhammad Najar.

The writer may have his/her numbers reversed in the paragraph above: The T-27 is a WWII-vintage model, while the T-72Z Safir-74, according to the Federation of American Scientists, is "an Iranian upgrade to the T-54/[T-55] that may have been applied to Iraqi T-54s captured in the Iran-Iraq War."

"The two countries' armed forces must be prepared to face the common enemy that has been working to undermine stability and cause regional tension," Turkemani said.

Seems like an awful lot of fanfare for some recycled tanks, scud missiles, and such.

Among his visits in the Islamic Republic, he met with the Iranian chief of staff and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and toured a local aircraft factory.
Syrian sources told the London-based Al Hayat that the understandings were of a strictly defensive nature. They indicated that both countries have been targeted recently [by Western powers].
After a meeting between the two senior officials, the Iranian Defense Ministry issued a statement saying that Teheran was interested in strengthening cooperation against "American and Israeli threats." It also noted that the two countries should struggle to bring peace and stability in the region and disarm it from weapons of mass destruction.

"...should struggle to bring peace and stability in the region and disarm it from weapons of mass destruction."

Which region is this crackpot talking about? Because it’s definitely not the Middle East.

I'd love to see an Islamic armoured formation wheel out in order of battle with any of the Soviet tanks cited above......Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands....

... is this their version of the Maginot Line?

Gosh, I wonder if Syria will also buy Iran's fearsome super double secret stealth flying boat?

One Palestinian was killed Friday evening after an IDF gunboat fired a missile at a vehicle in the town of al-Mugraka near Khan Younis in the central Gaza strip. Two other people sustained serious-to-critical injuries in the blast.

storemanager,

Odds are that those Paleostinians who were killed today by that IDF missile were carrying around some of those Israeli-made weapons with the embedded micro-transmitters. Kaboom!

This is probably good news from the standpoint of misdeployment of Syrian defense $; those old tanks are just A10-fodder. But the Iranians would doubtless do bad things with the income.

One would think they learned something about Russian hardware from the six day war. Luckily, these jackballs run in circles.

I'd be in favor of letting the muslims fight with any weapons THEY can devise, and that excludes any they have to beg, borrow, or steal from infidels. Israeli nuclear-armed Jericho's vs arab swords and knives. That's how it should be.

Henry,
Keep the faith my friend, we will be victorious,I guarantee! That being said, however, some major sacrifices are forthcoming,in addition to the predictable thinning of the herd.

henry-

My older brother and his wife go to Disneyworld, etc., for vacations, now that their kids are in college (not my cup of synthetic glee, but hey, somebody's got to keep frozen Walt's liquid nitrogen level stable) so a lot of the apparently-childless people you see may just be empty nesters. My older sister has 7 kids. So, let's not worry too much.

And, it isn't a sheer demographics game anyway, otherwise the British would have beaten the outnumbered, outgunned colonials in 1776.

Rent "Soylent Green" for a Malthusian laugh this weekend.

And a Happy Father's Day to all who are on Sunday!

How kind of President Ass'ad, considering the allies and the need for much needed target practise! How long will his army last?

Probably about 25 minutes as it stands, maybe the could get another 5 minutes grace for his regime should he buy Iranian equipment.

Anyway, the true Arab warrior techniques when faced with the Infidel armies usually involve taking their boots off and running like frightened girls into the sand dunes!

Maybe they should stick to worshipping some irrelevant book and sucking water up their noses. That's the only thing they seem to be good at.

IceDragon,

Does that 25 minutes include the time they take to change back into their civilian clothes?

Besides surrendering in droves and kissing the hand of the Infidel soldiers (like we've all seen on the news how they show everybody just how #1 their god really is), what muslim armies also seem to excel at is being quick-change artists on the battle field. They seem so proficient at it that one wonders if they have been trained to change clothes while fleeing enemy fire. Perhaps they carry civilian clothing in their packs. Perhaps they wear civilian clothes underneath uniforms designed to be yanked completely off with one good pull.

henry--

Open your eyes. Look around. Isn't the world a beautiful place?

The kindest, most loving thing I did for my children was to never have conceived them.

I do find your comments offensive, but you do have the right to your own opinion.

That's part of the beauty of my American culture, which I happen to love, dearly. In fact, all people of my personal acquaintance love their Western culture. From where are you drawing your (unstated) statistics?
