A MID-LEVEL Taliban commander said to lead more than 100 men in southern Afghanistan surrendered to a government reconciliation drive overnight as authorities arrested 12 other rebels.Mullah Ibrahim, aged about 45, told reporters in the southern city of Kandahar that he had decided to join the reconciliation process "because I can see that there is an Islamic government in place."
Police arrested the one-legged mullah about two weeks ago in Kandahar province, the birthplace of the Taliban movement that sees the worst of the militant uprising against the new government.
The US-led coalition says Ibrahim had been in charge of 100 to 150 troops and was "active" in Kandahar city and Panjwayi district, about 30km to the southwest.
What I don't get is what the policy makers are up to. The solution to sharia is sharia ? Both in afghanistan and iraq. As soon as the U.S. forces pull out, they'll start the hand chopping and stone killings again.

In other news, a senior U.S official said: "We are a little suprised that Afghanistan is the same as it ever was. We believe that the people of Afghanistan want peace and democracy, and they want to get rid of the Taleban. Unfortunately, poor economic conditions have caused community tensions, and some religious community members have unfortunately been driven into beheading aid workers as a result of social stigma attached to them by the media. We have decided to give the new Afghanistan government $10 billion in aid in an effort to help foster democratic development and stability."

I wonder if the Finnish Defence Forces will be placed on high alert when Sweden collapses. I suppose it's a blessing that their military has been reduced to almost nothing. That way, the Muslims will cause less damage when they take over.

Afghanistan is a ratcage and it's bound for hardcore Islamic rule. It's time we faced up to the fact that the population there will never be grateful for western economic and military assistance and that they neither want nor deserve further help from us.
I can think of plenty of uses for billions of dollars in the United States. But I can't think of many good reasons for spending that money over there any more.
Too bad Sharia bans beer sales, the Mullah could have got a job in a brewery making "Hops".
If it ever came to court, he wouldn't have a leg to stand on.
I emailed Bush, when these splendid instruments of jurisprudence came out, questioning the rationale for allowing such U.S.-approved "Constitutions" (cobbled-together in both "conquered" Afghanistan and "defeated" Iraq) to be permitted, by our politicians, ambassadors and generals, to become de facto Sharia Law documents.
What they hell were we fighting for- Islam's interests or our own?
No answer.
