World powers have compromised on a demand that Iran commit to a long-term moratorium on uranium enrichment and are asking only for suspension during talks on Teheran's nuclear program, diplomats said Wednesday.In another concession, Iran would be allowed to carry out uranium conversion - a precursor to enrichment - if it agrees to multination talks, the diplomats said. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to divulge the contents of the offer made by six countries to Teheran Tuesday in a bid to defuse the Iranian nuclear standoff.
EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana who formally presented the offer to Iranian officials this week - said Wednesday that the issue of enrichment would have to be reassessed once talks were completed.
"In principle ... they will have to stop now, we will have to negotiate with no process of enrichment in place," he told reporters in the German city of Potsdam. "After the finalization of the negotiations we will see what happens."
Solana said the incentive offer came with "no specific timeframe," but that he expected an Iranian answer within "weeks."
Such changes to long-standing international demands on enrichment are important because they signal possible readiness to accept some limited form of the activity, despite fears that it can be misused to make the fissile core of nuclear warheads.
Since talks between key European nations and Iran broke off in August, the public stance by the European negotiators and the United States has been that Iran must commit to a long-term moratorium on enrichment to establish confidence as a precondition for talks on the nuclear standoff.
At least until now.

Europe dodged any responsibility at all in the matter.
So if Uncle Sam HAD nuked Iran, it might well have faced economic, diplomatic, or even military retalliation from any or all of Russia, China, or India. Or other Islamic countries in any combined alliances.
That is why America backed down. this time.
When Iran's nuke-laden missiles start flying and millions of people get murdered by Islam (and make no mistake about it it is almost certainly going to happen) China, Russia, and India will likely pay for their short-sighted policies one way or another. As will the world. Blood will tell.

How would a State Department of Al "An inconinient truth" Gore or a John "Band-of-brothers" Kerry be that different from that of this administration? It was abysmal under Powell, and it was thought that under Rice, at least the State Department would fall in line with Administration policies. Instead, with the whole approach to Iran, it's been the EU and the State Department that has been calling the shots.
Couple that with the tacit support for the Chechens, Albanians and Bosnians, and one gets the idea of how out of touch with reality the state department is. It's the job of the President not only to lead, but also to explain exhaustively as to why certain countries are our enemies. The president refuses to do that. To this day, he believes that North Korea and Myanmar are as existencial a threat as Iran and maybe Syria. Oh, and Pakistan and Saudi Arabia aren't threats at all.

In this case the United States was unable to go to war against Iran for a reason no one here seems to be able to understand except myself: Iran over the past decade has become a major economic trading partner with Russia, China, other Communist bloc countries such as Venezuela and Cuba, and India. These nations opposed any and all intervention in Iran by the United States. They sided with Iran in this case.
If the United States had bombed Iran, China, Russia, India and Venezuela all would have retalliated economically and possible militarily.

Without European support (the only international support aside from Israel which is a tiny country, too small to make up for the total lack of international support America got in this standoff).
America's only option was to either stall for time and/or make concessions. And that's what Bush and Company did. And I we can also thank the EU for its non-support. It delivered on that count as usual.

And if America gives it an excuse to attack at this point, it just might try something. China's rising military power is causing concern worldwide and America may have been right not to enter a conflict with it now over Iran. Iran may not be worth a possible tragedy for America.
And it is not clear, given China's recent technological revolution, that America would recover from such an assault.
Safety first. Maybe it is better we live to fight another day than get into a nuclear showdown.

They would deny they had anything to do with it. What is America going to do? Commit suicide by punishing the Russians with their nuclear stick? Not likely. The end result is that a US city is destroyed, the economy is wrecked, and Russia and China that much happier.

U.N.: Weapons Equipment Missing in Iraq
UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- U.N. satellite imagery experts have determined that material that could be used to make biological or chemical weapons and banned long-range missiles has been removed from 109 sites in Iraq, U.N. weapons inspectors said in a report obtained Thursday.
U.N. inspectors have been blocked from returning to Iraq since the U.S.-led war in 2003 so they have been using satellite photos to see what happened to the sites that were subject to U.N. monitoring because their equipment had both civilian and military uses.

In the report to the U.N. Security Council, acting chief weapons inspector Demetrius Perricos said he's reached no conclusions about who removed the items or where they went. He said it could have been moved elsewhere in Iraq, sold as scrap, melted down or purchased.

From the imagery analysis, Perricos said analysts at the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission which he heads have concluded that biological sites were less damaged than chemical and missile sites.
The commission, known as UNMOVIC, previously reported the discovery of some equipment and material from the sites in scrapyards in Jordan and the Dutch port of Rotterdam.

The report said 3,380 valves, 107 pumps, and more than 7.8 miles of pipes were known to have been located at the 39 chemical sites.

Pythagoras, the United States has been living with the threat of nuclear holocaust hanging over it's collective head since the USSR developed the bomb in the late 50's. Ask folks my age about diving under the desks and crouching in the halls during A-bomb drills. The fear that little exercise instilled in my generation is probably a good chunk of the reason that we no longer have enough working bombs to blow up the entire world at once if need be - for all the good that would do anyone. Exercise in overkill.

Let's take these cases separately.
Russia's role in this has been discussed at length. There are conspiracy buffs there thinking that the US is out to get them, and Western support to anti-Russian parties in Ukraine and Belarus, not to mention Western ambivalence in Chechnya and Serbia, hasn't exactly helped. But Russia did nothing in 1998 when Serbia was bombed by the US. Why would anybody think that Russia would shed blood for Iran or Syria, when they didn't do that for fellow Slavs? One way the US could have got Russian support was to end its demand that Russia stop persecuting Chechens and other Muslims in Russia, and recognize that they too are at the receiving end of a Jihad. An empathic attitude would have gone miles in gaining Moscow's support.
In India's case, the only pro-Iranian, or more accurately, anti-US party there is the Leftist allies of the ruling Congress there, which is supporting that government from outside. India has two things it needs desperately - nuclear technology to meet their heavily increased energy needs, for which US co-operation is critical. The other is the gas pipeline from Iran, and I'm skeptical that it will happen. For one, the Iranians want to run this pipeline through Pakistan, and despite whether or not Indian pols oppose Iran or not, one thing they aren't comfortable with is Pakistan having a key to India's energy supplies. I think it was a mistake of the US not to make the nuclear co-operation contingent on India cancelling the Iran gas deal. India clearly needs the former more than the latter, and would any day prefer to have the US recognize it as a nuclear power. Getting them to jettison Iran as an ally may not have been easy given the Leftist support in this equation, but it's a mistake to think of India as an ally of Iran, in the way that, say, Iran is an ally of Syria.
In fact, prior to President Bush's visit to India in March, the US did get India on its side in the IAEA referring Iran to the UN security council. More could, and should have been done to force India to take a hostile stance re: Iran.
On China, they have no allies; only customers and suppliers. They have been on an oil shopping spree worldwide, dipping into US suppliers such as Canada, Venezuela and Russia, as well as hitting on Islamic oil suppliers in a big way, including KSA, Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. But their economy is still too dependent on exports to the US, and what's more, a major reason for their boom has been the virtual relocation of a good portion of the US manufacturing sector to China. If the US simply threatened to slap heavy import duties on Chinese exports, one would see a heavy exodus of major companies of their manufacturing facilities from China, thereby sending their economy into a tailspin. Also, China doesn't have long range ballistic missiles that they'd need to hit LA or LV.
Therefore, of your 3 examples, none of them are examples where the US couldn't have forced their support. And even if the US didn't get their support, the least they could have done was to force them to be neutral. Instead, we've had this charade of the EU-3 trying to get Iran to be nice. And European posters here wonder why we in the US are so hostile to Europe.

We do have some leftists who are anti - America, but the majority of us Hindus hate the guts of anytning islamic. pakistan is a pain in our necks and it survives solely on U.S. support. We can take out pakistan in 8 hours flat, ending a lot of terrorism over the globe. Most of the terrorist training camps are in pakistan. Pal, we love America, the Land of the Free. A technology that was given up by all except India and Japan. We have 3 reactors that, in the process of creating energy, produce high grade plutonium, the source of more energy. It was this by-product of plutonium, that worried the U.S., and it offered us the nuclear deal. But, we don't need it. This is terrible news. But not unexpected. Note how the State Dept and White House operate. First there's tough talk from Bush and Condi. Then they "moderate" and then they capitulate. Maybe the powers that be in DC are not bothered by the notion that Muslim fanatics have the bomb. After all, Pakistan has had the bomb for several years, produced by American-trained scientists, if I am not mistaken.
Recall that the State Dept and CIA have been pro-Arab, pro-Muslim for many years. The CIA was founded in 1947 and has been pro-Arab all along. Check Miles Copeland, The Game of Nations, & Andrew Tully, CIA: The Inside Story. There is a lot more that is not generally known. For instance, CIA was giving info on Israeli troop movements and military moves during the Six Day War. General Keegan, former head of US Air Force intelligence, has pointed this out, as have others.

Is there some reason you are exonerating Iran's co-conspirators (including India, China, Russia, Venezuela and other islamic countries, and Europe). All of these aforementioned countries bent over backwards to stop the United States government from intervening militarily in Iran and it is THEY who forced the US government's hand. We know and care about what is happening with the mullahs. These other countries are more concerned about the petroleum than human life.
The United States under these circumstances was NOT in a position to stop Iran from going ahead with uranium enrichment via military means.
Because the situation had become a booby trap. If America HAD bombed Iran and its enemies in the Communist bloc had retalliated and a world war ensued would the US government STILL be blamed? I am sure it would be.

Buddy, what I mean to tell you is that Russia is not interested in nuking the U.S. China is. But it will not do so in case of an invasion on iran. India is benign. bangladeshis fire at us all the time, and we do not bother firing back. Get my gist ? Yes, we want petroleum, but, like I said, and so did a lot of posters here, the state department turns a blind eye to pakistan, in spite of all the proof that it is (read my post above) supporting terror. And the state dept. calls saudi arabia an ally. Buddy, nothing, but stupidity is stopping Mr. Prez. from invading iran. Stupidity of his advisors.

Russia to stop military exports to Iran
8 June 2006: Russia has agreed to a British proposal to suspend military exports to Iran but this won’t be for long nor will contracted deals be scrapped.
Russian-Iranian defence deals are bilateral and nearly a dozen military cooperation agreements have been signed in the last five years.
The Russian move is to pressure Iran to abide by international rules and negotiate a peaceful solution to the vexed nuclear issue.
Russia has been under tremendous US and Western pressure to stop military cooperation with Iran to force it to end its illegal weapons’ programme.
Diplomats said that the Russian decision followed its foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov’s private talk with his British counterpart, Margaret Beckett.
And India is not an islamic country either.
