"In the region there is of course a country such as Iran -- a great country, a great people and a great civilisation which is respected and which plays a stabilising role in the region," he told a news conference.
French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy needs to be stabilized from drinking to much wine which may be part of the french peoples problem in the first place.

The story you cite about Egyptian Copts being proud of Hizbullah has about as much credibility as that of Iranian Jews, or Lebanese Maronites supporting Hizbullah. They are hostages in their own countries - what do you expect? Do you really think that these Jews, Maronites or Copts, once they escaped the s#!*holes they stay in, would continue to pay lip service to Hizbullah, or other such Islamic causes?

The war that Israel is waging against Hezbollah has strategic implications. As far as Israel is concerned, Jordan and Lebanon are buffer states. Israel cannot allow either to fall into Islamist hands.
At present Jordan is safely in Hashemite hands. Lebanon is quite a different matter altogether. Hezbollah is a state within a state. It runs schools, hospitals, buses, hotels, has an extensive political and military infrastructure, and even collects taxes. If Hezbollah comes out of this with its position enhanced, then Lebanon will be in Hezbollah/Iran's hands.
IN addition, one already sees the strength of Iran's position in Iraq. With Hezbollah's "victory", and it will be trumpeted as such, Iraq will come increasingly under Iran's influence. We then have a set of contiguous states from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon (three of which are Shia), bringing Iran on the doorstep of Israel. Combined with Iran's nuclear aspirations and its martyr complex, one has all the makings of a catastrophe- which makes Iran an agent of global instability.
Iran's rulers must be in state of jubilation. They see the makings of the old Persian empire - an empire that was destroyed some 1400 years ago by the Sunnis, its influence again stretching to the Mediterranean, all under the banner of Shia Islam, and poking one in the eye to the Sunnis in the process.

Iran has undermined the Lebanese political order and equipped Hizbollah; Iran boasts of having recruited "tens of thousands of volunteer suicide bombers"; and there is so much else besides - too much to list. There is just so much over the past quarter of a century. Of course, the reverse is the truth.

Ever read the classic science-fiction novel "When Worlds Collide" (eventually made into a movie)? Written way back in 1932, the authors try to show what might happen when it's discovered that there's another planet on a collision course with Earth.
In the novel, America responds to this existential threat by mobilizing their best scientists and engineers in an emergency effort to build space ships to escape to other planets (which eventually proves successful).

I agree with both posters above. This attitude is a weird combination of cynicism and naivite. It's almost as if they do not understand how serious this is, and feel making alliances with true evil is worth it to twit allies they resent in some way. You see some of this same behavior with Russia and China.
This sort of shadenfreud is appalling. If (God forbid) the US and Britain ever fell to a fascistic enemy, I wouldn't gloat if France, or Japan, or anyother country that we had at times disagred with over things like tariffs, trade protectionism or snooty attitudes were also to fall. This is insanity.
As for Iran playing a "stabilising role" in the Middle East, I do not believe that the French really believe this, nor do they expect anyone else to believe this.
Forget the French. They'll come around later. The US makes a serious mistake if it assumes we must have a coalition of all European nations before we can be justified in our actions. This won't happen. Even if the French of European descent agree with us, the French government can't because of demographics. When 10% of the people within your national boundaries could turn on you violently you can't say anything that would provoke. The French government and its traditional people, pre 1973, are hostages to potential violence. Forget about the statements and the actions of France. It will not make a real difference one way or the other. It is hamstrung and hanging by it's hind legs in a halal butcher shop at this point in time. We will help the French again when the time is right.
The idea that we must have a pan-European coalition of committed partners in this is tenuous at best today, but nothing succeeds like success. Israel and the English-speaking nations of the world need to get it together and act together. Britian and its children have always been the best & brightest producers in this world since the time past Elizabeth I. Those nations have been instrumental in spreading and extending the fundamental rights we know as 'Western'. France was never a crucial or long-term proponent in these matters, nor was Germany, Russia, Italy nor any other European nation.
