In regular marriages in Saudi Arabia, men must pay for expensive ceremonies, huge dowries and a home. If the couple divorce, he must pay alimony and child support.
So misyar appeals to men of reduced means, as well as men looking for a flexible arrangement -- the husband can walk away from a misyar and can marry other women without informing his first wife.
Wealthy Muslims sometimes contract misyar when on holiday to allow them to have sexual relations without breaching the tenets of their faith.
A misyar is often one of the only options for older spinsters, divorcees and widows who often struggle to find husbands in a society where they are stigmatised.
This vulnerability has sometimes encouraged abuses: women sometimes act as matchmakers for less than scrupulous men on the prowl for lonely and wealthy spinsters.
Suhaila Zein al-Abideen, of the International Union of Muslim Scholars in Medina, said almost 80 percent of misyar marriages end in divorce.
"A woman loses all her rights. Even how often she sees her husband is decided by his moods," she said.

I don't think this is all bad. At least this is an admission that human beings are sexual, we need affection, and we cannot live on the promise of paradise alone, or the bizzare family structures Islam would impose. While Islam is decidedly anti-woman in its legal system, temporary marriages do not seem to be to be any where near as problematic. So, the man does not have a raft of responsibilities to the woman, but then again the woman does not have them to the man either, at least as far as I am understanding.
Does anyone know if a woman can get a divorce easily from a misyar marriage? We should not just villify every aspect of Muslim culture. Even if this arrangement is sometimes abusive, it does not mean it is inherently so. I for one need more information to decide. For all I can tell, the Saudis might be loosening up. We should not forget that the liberation of women in the west was characterized by many false starts and problematic situations where there was sometimes abuse as well as freedom.
Look - If I'd been indoctrinated into a system where you could hook up with women and it was all legal and acceptable I'd have a hard time giving that up. Lust and the appeal of women ( who I'm not married to) is my most serious weakness and the thing I have to fight against the most. Even after 15 years of marriage...

I'm having a hard time believing divorced women get alimony and child support. If a guy has say, five kids by his four wives, and if he's not part of the Saudi family, how in the world would he pay alimony and child support? He wouldn't. She's on her own.

By the way, I hate to inform some of the male readers of JW about this, because it may shock you, but we females--shock, horror!--often fantasize about men other than our husbands/boyfriends and are tempted to have sex outside of our primary relationship as well. Hyprcrisy prevails again. Marriage is more of a convenience than anything else. Get married, have sex and then say I divorce you three times. That's all it takes really. But then, if you've read Oriana Fallaci's book 'The Force of Reason', you will remember how she describes, after having witnessed a 'wedding' in Islamabad, that she thought it was a homosexual wedding! It was the groom and the woman's guardian standing at the alter exchanging vows, whilst the bride stands in the background witnessing the two exchanges. I recall Oriana Fallaci also describing in her book 'The Force of Reason' how she was forced by the morality police whilst in Iran to enter into one of those temporary marriages, after being caught alone in a room with someone who I think was an interpreter!

I've noticed this is a type of taqiyya practiced by Sunnis -- denying that this or that Islamic practice is really orthodox Muslim, but is only a Shiite perversion.
The Sunnis do this with language. When the inquiring Infidel only knows temporary marriage by the Shiite term "muta", the Sunni will say, quite correctly, "Oh, that's a Shia practice, it has nothing to do with Sunni Islam." Now we have the Sunni equivalent term -- misyar.
Sunnis also do this bit of taqiyya when the inquiring Infidel asks about taqiyya itself -- as that term historically is rooted in Shia resistance (through deception) against Sunni oppressors.
We Infidels need to learn the Sunni equivalent terms for all these things, including taqiyya.
What Television says above can be heard on an NPR program with Tariq Ramadan, in which a caller mentioned his mastery of taqiyya. In his careful reply, he said that "taqiyya" is a Shi'a concept and I am a Sunni." The caller attempted to reply, but was cut off -- I heard the whole thing -- by the egregious Tom Ashbrook.
This is the height of chutzpah. First the muslims create a punishing system of sexual deprivation. In order to boast about chastity.

I found the Arabic term -- mufa’khathat ("literally translated, it means “placing between the thighs” which means placing the male member between the thighs of a child").
Now all I have to do is find the hadiths and/or koran verses from which this is derived.

And here is a religious fatwah that mentions Muhammad’s physical relations with Aisha:
Praise be to Allah and peace be upon the one after whom there is no [further] prophet.
After the permanent committee for the scientific research and fatwahs (religious decrees) reviewed the question presented to the grand Mufti Abu Abdullah Muhammad Al-Shemary, the question forwarded to the committee by the grand scholar of the committee with reference number 1809 issued on 3/8/1421 (Islamic calendar). It has become wide spread these days, and especially during weddings, the habit of mufa’khathat of the children (mufa’khathat literally translated means “placing between the thighs” which means placing the male member between the thighs of a child). What is the opinion of scholars knowing full well that the prophet, the peace and prayer of Allah be upon him, also practiced the “thighing” of Aisha - the mother of believers - may Allah be please with her.
After the committee studied the issue, they gave the following reply:
It has not been the practice of the Muslims throughout the centuries to resort to this unlawful practice that has come to our countries from pornographic movies that the kufar (infidels) and enemies of Islam send. As for the prophet, peace and prayer of Allah be upon him, thighing his fiancée Aisha. She was six years of age and he could not have intercourse with her due to her small age. That is why [the prophet] peace and prayer of Allah be upon him placed HIS [MALE] MEMBER BETWEEN HER THIGHS AND MASSAGED IT SOFTLY, as the apostle of Allah had control of his [male] member not like other believers..

In the above link Islamic scholar Dr Ahmad Al-Hajj Al-Kurdi comments on the fatwah in question. He is responding to a person who is asking whether or not the fatwah actually exists, and whether or not Muhammad committed this action. In response he says that Muhammad most probably did this after he consummated the marriage at 9 rather than when she was 6. His point of contention therefore is concerning when Muhammad did this to the little girl, and not whether or not he did it.
We also read:

The inquirer asks: “My parents married me to a young girl who hasn’t yet reached puberty. How can I enjoy her sexually?”
The imam answers him by saying: “Do not harm her if she cannot take intercourse but you may hug her, kiss her, and ejaculate between her legs” i.e. “thigh” her, as the fatwah in question indicates.(Source: )

I wonder how the mothers stand by and allow this to continue. I know women don't have any say in anything, but I think a good frying pan across the back of the head would get her point across. We are not talking about someone brought up in a civilized society. The women have been brought up this way, and they have seen other women, relatives, brought up this way. Problem: each link goes to a page in Arabic, and most of us can't read Arabic. There is a tab at the site for "French" -- I can read French; however, when I click on the French tab, the site does not show the same page, but takes the viewer back to home page, where a person must search for the right fatwa either by number or subject. I tried every number that seemed to be present in the links as well as numbers that were present in the Arabic text. None worked. I also tried to search for "mufa’khathat" in the slot they supply for searching for fatwas. No results.
Another disappointment is that these three links are all to the same site. It is doubtless that there must be hundreds if not thousands of such "thighing" fatwas among the Sunni community worldwide, and therefore at least a few dozen on the Internet from verifiably separate sources would be nice to have -- otherwise Muslim apologists will just be able to argue that it is a rare and unrepresentative phenomenon.

Yes these links were in the article I pasted. I've never managed to find fatwas/hadiths on the subject in English, probably a good reason for that.
