From the Khaleej Times: "Time bomb at Afghan university kills woman"
HERAT, Afghanistan - A timebomb exploded in a classroom of female university students in Afghanistan’s western city of Heart [sic] on Monday, killing one woman and wounding eight others, police said.
The device blew up just after 9:00 am in the English-language section of the Herat University’s education faculty, the city’s police director Ghulam Sarwar Haidari told AFP.
"The explosion took place at a time when the class was out but still there were a number of girls inside the class," Haidari said.
The blast destroyed chairs and tables, and shattered the windows. Blood was smeared across the floor.
The bomb had been hidden in a rubbish bin, said the interior ministry in Kabul, which handles police matters.
"One student named Razia died of her serious wounds in the hospital. Eight others were also slightly wounded by pieces of glass and the explosion. Some have already been discharged from hospital," a ministry spokesman said.
It was not immediately clear who had planted the bomb but one of the students said the attack was carried out by "enemies of knowledge and education".
"They want to scare us not to study but we are not afraid of such incidents and will continue to come to the institute and continue our education," said Frozan Ahmadi.
The extremist Taleban movement that was removed from government in late 2001 by a US-led coalition barred women and girls from getting an education or working.
Since the regime fell, women and girls have flooded back to schools although they are still outnumbered by men and boys.
The Taleban movement has meanwhile launched an increasingly deadly insurgency that has seen regular attacks on schools as part of a campaign against the reforms and developments of the new government which has wide support in the international community.

Are Afghanistan women victims or Jihadists, generally speaking? It's hard to build up sympathy when they could be just as crazy as the men.
Are you finding that life is not easy for you, just because you are the sort of man who likes to slap women, beat them up or even kill them? Do you find that nobody understands your little hobby and people insist on arresting and punishing you, as though you were some sort criminal or lunatic? Do not deapair: just become a Muslim and go and live in an Islamic society: you will always find some opportunity to pursue your little pastime, there - and be regarded as perfectly normal, as well.
Just goes to show the "respect" muslims have for their women. The horrors of having an educated woman to compete with. HORRORS!!
Seems like this should be taken as an insult to the fathers or husbands who these women belong to. But I guess if you allow your women to attend school, it is like allowing your goats to wander into the mosque, and it's natural that they should be sacrificed to allah.

It would have been far more accurate if it included: "enemies of knowledge, education and women."
And we all know what that enemy is by now, don't we?

I would still like to know the islamic reason quoted for not educating girls. Is there something in the koran or hadith that specifically denies education or is it arrived at by some other round about way?
Borg: Since the Qur'an clearly states that women are inferior to men more than once, and given the fact that there is no description of an afterlife for females -- only that women and young boys are the rewards for the Muslim male who reaches Paradise, I think it's safe to say that the exceedingly Patriarchial society that is Islam doesn't need much more of an excuse to deny women the sun on their skin, the light on their faces or a book in their hands.

This is why a Muslim in Montreal canada went into a school and sellected 20 female students to shoot and kill, Gamil Gharbi hated females geting educated and taking jobs from men, his father was a avid Shariah-law Muslim from Algeria .
In December 1989 Gamil manage to murder 14 of the 20 female students before turning the rifle on himself to be with Muhammed and Allah in paradise. Western Muslims jsut don't get it, "It's the Quran stupid" .

As I saw, Afghan women are *usually* treated well enough to not be, well, mistreated as victims. That is, most are free to wear no burqa if they choose, but many (most?) still do so out of fear of reprisal. Some in the larger cities even wear western clothes.
(Part of the problem there is the culture, not just Islam. They literally dip children into scalding liquids when the children misbehave. That's not Islam, that's just craziness. Granted, I am the first to say that Islam is seriously threatening to civilization...)
Some women speak multiple languages, which to me is an indication of education. Some have jobs and help operate businesses. Some even freely speak to infidels.
Are they jihadi? Maybe, but that would be hard to tell from casual contact in the streets. But from personal experience, most Afghans like America and Americans. Afghanistan was once a very progressive country for being Muslim, and many Afghans remember/want that. They drank alcohol, had discotheques, and women wore tight jeans and even !gasp! skirts. Bagram was the wine making area for the country.

Dogs are considered 'unclean' in Islam, so they would probably be forbidden to use as bomb-sniffers, especially for such worthless creatures as women.
(Beware of humanoid beasts who belittle the canine allies who helped us to climb the steep, hard road to Civilization. With more loyalty than we will ever get -for the same effort- from the average true believer Muslim. I'd trust the mangiest mutt over the greatest "Islamic scholar" any day.
