MOGADISHU, Somalia - Residents of central Somalia said Thursday that hundreds of Ethiopian troops were patrolling the town of Baidoa in armored vehicles, less than a day after Islamic militants moved near the base of the weak, U.N.-backed government.
A spokesman for the Ethiopian government had said that his country would protect Somalia's transitional government from attack by Islamic militias.
Numerous witnesses told The Associated Press that Ethiopian soldiers arrived Thursday afternoon in Baidoa, 240 kilometers (150 miles) northwest of Mogadishu.
The Ethiopian troops have set up a camp near the transitional president's home in Baidoa, residents said.
"People were prevented from walking on the road that leads to the building," one resident said on the condition of anonymity because of fears of reprisals.
Ethiopian and government officials were not immediately available for comment.

You don't have to know anything in this case to take a side. The side is that of Ethiopia, formerly "Christian" Ethiopia, and once the site, for the hopes and dreams of beleaguered Western Christendom, of the mythical Christan kingdom of mythical Prester John, that great and good king, a "Christom king," who ruled a land on the other side of the lands taken by the Muslims or Saracens, and who was the great hope -- black or brown (his kingdom was first placed in India) but definitely not white -- of Christian imaginations.
Ethiopia as a Christian country for a while -- for a very long while -- was given a kind of special dispensation in Muslim attitudes, because it was the Ethiopian king who gave refuge to 85 followers of Muhammad who had fled the Hejaz, and that act gave Ethiopia a special status. But no longer, apparently. Ethiopia is in part of the world. The world belongs to Allah, and the People of Allah. Ethiopia, too, will have to be islamized, and given where it is in the world, it may be culturally arabized as well.
Ethiopia as a Christian redoubt makes it, in the eyes of the Egyptians, automatically enemy territory. Ethiopia as a black African (even if Hamitic) country, makes it a place automatically to be despised by the Arabs, whose supremacist ideology finds its perfect, semi-submerged vehicle (a veritable submarine), in Islam. And now Ethiopia is to be conquered by Islam for other reasons as well. For the Ethiopians have suffered famine after famine, drought after drought. They have never taken advantage of the Nile waters that flow through the country. In the past ten years, more and more, intelligent Ethiopians, and agronomists from outside the country, have pointed out how silly it is not to engage in irrigation projects that use some of that Nile water.
Plans have been made. But meanwhile, in the malevolent circles of Arab Muslims in Egypt, other plans have been made to prevent Ethiopians from using some of that Nile water. How dare they, those black Christian Ethiopians, think that they can divert some of the waters of the Nile to their own use? Don't they know that the Nile belongs to Egypt? Don't all the storybooks, and history books, say so? Doesn't the Nile belong to Egypt the way, say, the Danube belongs to...well, hmm, who does that Danube belong to, anyway?
Threats have been made by Egypt: don't do a thing without our permission. Has the American government stepped in? Has the Black Caucus been alterted, has the Ethiopian embassy moved heaven and earth to make this issue known to Americans? No and No and No.
Well, then, let's get the ball rolling right here and right now. Make this an issue. Make the defense, and shoring up, of Ethiopia, and total support for it, as a Christian country whose very name resonates through Western literature, glitters "like a rich jewel on an Ethiop's ear," Western history, and of course in the consciousness of black Africans, as the only country to remain free both of European imperialists, and more importantly, free of the longer-lasting Arab imperialism that deprives Believers of interest in, consciousness of, knowledge of, their own pre-Islamic or non-Islamic pasts.
Support Ethiopia, to the hilt, iin its pre-emptive strike against the forces of Islam. Whether those forces are in Somalia, or sitting in Cairo, trying to deny the Ethiopians their perfectly legitimate rights to divert some of the headwaters of the Nile into irrigation projects.
I read that story of the slaying of the soldier's family in Kirkland in the local paper. The Fox News version failed to mention that the 3 year old had her throat slit. Strange.. Hopefully, just a kook, but who knows. The father/soldier is in military intelligence in Iraq.

Do you live, or ever visit, Washington D.C.? Take a cab ride -- and try to get an Ethiopian driver. Start the conversation off slowly. Ask him where's from. If he says "Ethiopia," then you can go further. You want to find out if ie is Christian, right? So something like this:
"Hmm. Let me guess. Are you 'Danakil'?"
If he is a member of this group (also called the Afars, but old Ethiopian hands such as you and I, who thought nothing of going as far as the eleventh cataract on the Nile, will prefer the word "Danakil"), he will be flabbergasted. And he may well be. Ordinarily, that means Muslim. Ask if he's a Muslim. He might say yes, proudly or slightly suspiciously. He might tell you no, he's "not" without going further or he might say forthrightly that he's a Christian. And then try to find out what you can about his own views. And do the same with other Ethiopians, especially in universities, among whom the Christians predominate, and in that way you can begin to find out things.
Grazing in the extensive African Studies section of an academic bookstore, I spotted two Hamitic-looking students, figured out how to engage them in conversation, discovered they were from Ethiopia, and took a chance, worrying aloud about the "islamization" of Ethiopia. They broke into broad and relieved smiles, smiles of agreement, and instantly a rush of information and worry came out of them, and they were surpirsed, and glad, to find someone who apparently had the same fears, worried about the same thing, and even began to talk about Egypt's bullying of Ethiopia and how the Sudan was being slowly completely islamized and arabized. Had I been able to record their conversations and then transcribe it here, nothing they said would have surprised you -- but their being so aware of the situationm, and the role of Islam, surprised me.

On that day a combined Turkish, Arab, African Muslim army between 15,000 and 16,000 were crushed by a army of 7,000-8,000 Ethopians and about 100 Portuguese and with it the dreams of a Ottoman controlled East Africa. A real forgotten gem in the War of Islam OR The War to Save Civilization (624-today).

Yea, I think there is something in the Hadith about it but I am not the best to answer that question...someone smarter on the subject of Islamic future telling. I think it is to be destroyed by a Ethiopian army never to be rebuilt. Over at Ummah.com (not the best source for facts of any kind) they got into a typical fit over the destruction of their beloved rock. They accused Ethiopians of working with Jews to rule the world or something. Said a few racist things about blacks and a black muslim was feeling guilt over his "races" role in its destruction. After it is wiped out then the super battle occurs and Islam and Non-Islam face off.
If true or not or just typical muslim stupidity....this alone should be enough to save the Ethiopians from destruction....They have to be saved. It will anger the muslims so.

Thanks for the description. As for me, I'm on the Left coast, nowhere near DC. I had an Ethiopian (Eastern Orthodox, since he had his Lent fasts, etc) colleague in my last job, who was generally Leftist. On occasion, I did give him opportunities to talk about Ethiopia's Islamic problems, by bringing up questions about Eritrea's secession, but he either refused to take the 'bait', or thought of it more as a problem arising from Italian colonization of Eritrea. He used to speak in support of things like Saddam's conquest of Kuwait (like claiming that Kuwait was historically a part of Iraq), or of the Gulf countries in general (his quote: there's no better place in the world for a Muslim). Make of that what you will.
You mentioned 'Afars' in your description of Ethiopian tribes. If you recall, Djibouti, which is now an independent country between Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopia, was in its French colonial days, called the 'French territory of Afars and Issas'. Are their Afars and Ethiopia's Afars the same? Like you mentioned, from that association, one would think they were Muslim. You mentioned how in the 7th century, the Islamic Proph Md and 85 of his followers found refuge in Abyssinia. Wasn't Eritrea a part of that? If it was, why was Eritrea Islamized while the rest of Abyssinia wasn't?

The CIA fact book seems way wrong. Ethiopia is by all accounts a 90%+ Eastern Orthodox country (sometime, I hope to get to how many brands there are - Russian, Greek, Coptic, Ethiopian,.... maybe in another thread) while Eritrea, which I assumed to be an Islamic country, is at best 50% Islamic, and neither of them are members of the OIC. Not that that necessarily means much - countries like Guyana and Mozambique, whose Muslim populations are less than 20% seem to be OIC members (can someone confirm that independently of spurious sources like Wikipedia?)

Mea culpa. I thought it interesting, however, that despite getting refuge in Medina, Mohammed thought nothing about converting it at swordpoint. Given that, his rationale for sparing Ethiopia would make for interesting reading.

My house cleaner is from Ethipia. LIke the majority of the Ethiopians (and a large number of Lebanese), she is a greek orthodox-Kopte. Personnaly i am not Christian, i consider it along with Islam a fascist religion and i believe to the Greco Roman culture and civilisation but this is another story.
Ethiopians and Kopt Orthodoxs in genral are suffering on many places, mostly in Egypt. Ethiopians have developed their very own civilisation, they have produced some masterpieces of art. My house cleaner along with other Ethiopians from Athens community are very religious and every sunday they go to church along with other Greek orthodoxs and on 15 August they are visiting Tinos for the memory of santa maria.
We must understood that Ethiopia is a beautiful country with many problems. Hailer Selasie fouth Nazism and he was the first leader in 1933 to talk about the threat of nazism. Italian Fascists did some of the worst ever atrocities during ww2. They used to cut of the heads of the Ethiopians and they were leaving them on the side of the roads as a sightseen. Ethiopia's suffering has not end, but those ppl are very proud.
During the 1996 Imia crisis, many ethiopians went voluntary to join the Greek army, though that there was not any call for reserves. They are a well respected part of our community and they are very good ppl unlike others (Albanians, Russians and etc.).
I hope that Ethiopia will do some good job against the muslims. I think that Orthodox kOPTS ARe the majority in Ethiopia like in Lebanon. The church of Ethiopia is a weird situation. Though like all other orthodox churches is on communial with the Ecumenical Patriarch Mr.Bartholomeos in muslim occupied Constantinople, it seems that it is pretty distanced and closed from the other orthodox churches.

Cherie defends ‘home snatchers’

JULY is often the cruellest month for middle-aged Greek Cypriots such as Meletis Apostolides. For the British-trained architect, its heat recalls the 1974 Turkish invasion, the deaths of friends in his National Guard unit and his parents’ heartbreak over the loss of a family home and lemon orchards near the graveyards where their ancestors lie.
But Apostolides will not be in Cyprus this week on the 32nd anniversary of the Turkish landings. He will be in the High Court in London, listening to Cherie Blair QC plead for the right of a British couple, David and Linda Orams, to remain in the house they have built on the land the Apostolides family owned and cultivated until they were driven out by Turkish troops.
Apostolides already has a judgment in his favour in the Nicosia district court, which has ordered the Oramses to demolish the substantial house and swimming pool they have built, return the land and pay rent for the time they have occupied it. But the property is near Kyrenia in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, a state recognised only by Turkey. Judgments made by a court on the Greek side of the United Nations-patrolled ceasefire line dividing the island cannot be enforced there.
Blair plans to oppose an attempt by the Greek Cypriot’s lawyer to have the Nicosia judgment registered in the High Court. If this succeeds and the Oramses refuse to comply, Apostolides could be compensated by having the couple’s house near Brighton seized.
If Blair succeeds she will have won a test case that will ensure millions of pounds worth of Greek Cypriot property in northern Cyprus can be sold to expatriate bargain-hunters with impunity. “It’s unbelievable,” said Apostolides before his departure for London. “I’m going to be sitting in court listening to the wife of the British prime minister explaining why someone has the right to remain on my land.”
President Tassos Papadopoulos, rarely slow to pick a fight with the former colonial power, has rejected Downing Street’s insistence that Blair is merely doing her job. “It is difficult to separate her from being the wife of the British prime minister,” he declared when the news of her involvement in the case was first announced.
Later the British chargé d’affaires was called to the foreign ministry to hear the Cypriot complaints. “Blair’s involvement was a bit too much. It could have been avoided,” said the ministry’s spokesman. Headlines in the Greek Cypriot press refer to Blair as “Caesar’s wife”. Last week a cartoon showed her bewigged and robed on the steps of the High Court, telling a judge: “My lord, as a specialist in human rights I support the claims of these poor people.” Behind her are the Oramses and people chanting: “We demand to enjoy stolen Greek Cypriot properties.”
Both the Greek and Turkish media insist she will earn £50,000 for handling the case. Exaggerated though these claims might be, there has been considerable speculation that her fees come from a consortium of British and Turkish Cypriot property speculators.
“Don’t dream it — buy it!” command the billboards of one of the estate agents in northern Cyprus. Many of these companies not only have English names, but staff to go with them. “I can do you a nice little flat for £25,000,” said a tanned young man called Dave from Romford, Essex. “Sea and mountain views and a shared pool.”
