The superb European essayist Fjordman has a must-read essay over at Gates of Vienna. Some of his points are confirmed by the new allegations about Alija Izetbegovic.

I also noticed at Gates of Vienna an open letter
to some faux Mohammadan moderate, probably not a
bad guy, but another one of these "my own private
Islam" sorts who muddies the waters.
Sorry, there is no Islam without the figure of
Muhammad, and if we're to believe what Muslims
do about him, then he was a vile individual, not
one worthy of emulation. If you want to make up
a new religion, why not leave Muhammad out?
I sent the link for that article to the Canadian Islamic Congress.
I love doing that once in a while to taunt them, and other groups, with the notice that some of us out there understand their threat, thereby indicating that their whole purpose, that of propaganda, did not work on at least two people - Fjordman and me. LOL.
Just a polite note to read it and get back to me.
They never do.
Ha. I love it. It is about the only legal way in Canada to piss of a muslim. Any other way, and it's a violation of the criminal law, a violation of their civil rights, or grounds to have my ISP terminate my service.
Fjordman wrote an essay about mythology. There is no such thing as a Moderate Muslim. The Muslim leaders who might be considered moderate are marginalized to nothingness.
"Moderate muslims"
This Friday itself, three muslim males, emerging from the mosque after muslim prayers, ran amok in my city. They lashed out at the Hindus passing by. They had swords (wonder where they got them ?). There was confusion in the market outside the muslim hovel where it happened. People did not understand what was happening, and there was panic. The muslims ran after a man, Mangal Jatav, and murdered him by stabbing him 34 times. Curfew was imposed in that part of the city. Police are looking for the murderers. Motive of the crime is unknown.
The police have started bugging the prisons. Last month, a muslim inmate was caught on tape bragging to other muslim prisoners that he was responsible for setting fire to a bus that killed 16 people in the year 2005. At night time, when the passengers were sleeping, he doused the interior of the bus with a solvent, went up to the driver and asked to be let off. When the bus slowed, he threw a match in the bus and disembarked. Police have opened the case file and are booking him on murder, first degree, motive unknown.
In the same bugging operation in my city, another muslim, this time in a high security prison, was caught saying that he in his life had killed 74 Hindus randomly. He did the killings in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The police have so far opened the case files of 30 murders in the two states. He is being charged with murder, first degree, motive unknown.
All "Moderate muslims".
Pelayo: My understanding is that the "official position" of this site is that there are moderate Muslims but no moderate Islam. You seem to acknowledge this by referring to marginalized moderate Muslim leaders. The difference is crucial. If there are no moderate Muslims, it is a short step to violating the human rights of any Muslim in whatever way is convenient.
Slightly off-topic:
There is a symposium up at Front Page Magazine in which Claire Berlinski, a Jewish woman who lives in Istanbul, and well-known author on Islam, makes out a plausible case for Turkey as a place where a moderate Islam may be viable as a result of religious regulation by the State (extending even to the suppression of certain hadiths, apparently). Scroll down about 2/3 of the way through part II of the article. Someone from this site may wish to respond to her.
"If there are no moderate Muslims, it is a short step to violating the human rights of any Muslim in whatever way is convenient."
My two cents worth...
There are moderate people but no moderate Islam. If Muslims believe in Allah they cannot be moderate for Allah is not moderate. If they believe in the Qur'an they cannot be moderate for the Qur'an is not moderate. If they follow the path of Muhammad they cannot be moderate for Muhammad was not moderate. If Islam is not moderate, those following Islam cannot be moderate. Muslims claiming "moderate" status are fakes, Muslims in name only, Muslim-for-identification-purposes-only Muslims. They decry the actions of Islam but cling to the ideology. They are hypocrites and liars.
A moderate person would never violate the human rights of another human being, but in Islam no one has rights except the alpha Arab male. Where is the outcry for women's rights by those pious Muslim moderates? If a person belongs to a group that systematically denies human rights of others, even those of the same faith, they should not be entitled to human rights either. You can call me a racist, bigot, or hater, but I believe Muslim rights should be violated in whatever way is necessary to preserve one's own life, culture, and freedom. Let those "moderates" choose their own future. Chose a belief with no rights and prepare for the consequences or chose life and freedom, and abandon Islam.
Lastly, I'd like to repeat something I heard here once which relates my feelings on this matter succinctly: One can call themselves a Christian all day long, but unless they are following the teachings of Christ, they are not Christians.
Truthfully, honestly, how can any Muslim claim to be moderate in a faith that 'loves death'?
