Daniel Pipes has a terrific piece in today's New York Sun (there entitled "A Look at Islamic Violence," but it bears the title above at his website.) In it, he notes that "the violence by Muslims responding to comments by the pope fit a pattern that has been building and accelerating since 1989. Six times since then, Westerners did or said something that triggered death threats and violence in the Muslim world."
Those six are the Rushdie incident; the refusal of the Supreme Court in 1997 to remove a statue of Muhammad from the main court chamber; Jerry Falwell's calling Muhammad a terrorist in 2002; the Qur'an-flushing affair; Cartoon Rage; and now Pope Rage.
Pipes notes how these displays of outrage are orchestrated from above, and concludes:
No conspiracy lies behind these six rounds of inflammation and aggression, but examined in retrospect, they coalesce and form a single, prolonged campaign of intimidation, with surely more to come. The basic message – "You Westerners no longer have the privilege to say what you will about Islam, the Prophet, and the Qur'an, Islamic law rules you too" – will return again and again until Westerners either do submit or Muslims realize their effort has failed.

This tactic takes advantage of previous trends to limit speech. Leftist attacks on speech predate this. Everything that weakens job security also inhibits speech. Immigration has been a powerful force to weaken job security. People are afraid they will offend someone from some group by anything they say. They are afraid their employer will fire them because they are unpopular with some group. We need to reverse the long attack on all speech to gain it back on any particular speech.

When was the last time you were at a college campus. I currently attend, shall we say, a VERY liberal college where at the reception desk was an approved poster on a lecture about supposed war crimes by our President George W. Bush against humanity. This is what goes on everyday at colleges and even high schools. Most professors in the liberal arts tend to lean left anyway. I've heard everything from ridiculing of the President's IQ to promotion of socialism in my classes. If you add to this mix - the promotion of "multi-culturalism" which has now come to mean ANYTHING BUT Western or European; one is left with a fertile bed for anti-western, anti-american propaganda being fed on a daily basis to young Americans.

If the leftist media can't be convinced, not even after Sharia is put on all our damn countries, we need more of the edgy "Satanic Verses" type books, more of the "Fatwa Fridays", more of the Robert Spencers. Until we get that, their side will continue winning the fight. We cannot be afraid. Being intimidated by their side means they've already won.
Robert edited a book called 'The myth of Islamic Tolerance', which had contributions by Ibn Warraq, Bat Yeor and a host of other authors (I can't recall at the top of my mind which). It analyzes in depth the issues of dhimmitude, and goes on to discuss the Cairo decalaration of Human Rights, and how it differs from the Universal declaration of Human Rights.
As far as the UN goes, only human rights violations by the West or their allies (e.g. Israel, and in some rare cases, India) matters. When it's done by regimes like Sudan or Zimbabwe, it falls by the wayside. You may be talking rhetorically or facetiously, but everyone knows by now that the UN is less than a joke that doesn't deserve to be taken any more seriously than Hugo Chavez.
However, my understanding of those statues is that they are depictions of all the sources of law that have ultimately made their way into the US constitution, rather than all sources of law through the ages. If it was the latter, I think there are a lot of sources of law, such as in ancient China, that haven't been depicted. If somebody can explain (a) the symbolism of this artwork and (b) the resultant relevance of Mohammed to US law, that would be greatly appreciated.

The underlying message from all of the childish tantrums is: call Islam a 'religion of peace' or we will kill you. If you criticize Islam we will kill you. I agree with you generally about the PC multicultural mindset, but if these statues were built in the '30's, as your link provides, do you think it was PC, or just a naivete on the part of the designers who were totally oblivious about Mohammed's contributions - after all, his influence on the history of law was akin to Vladimir Lenin, who in those days was not glorified.
I think it's a pity that Hammurabi was depicted, but that Cyrus I of Persia wasn't. Under his rule, Persepolis was built completely with paid labor, unlike the Pyramids or the Great Wall. Had this been done, it might have been an elegant way to honor those in ancient history who preferred paid labor over those who preferred slavery. But then again, the Pharaohs weren't depicted here.

I've been saying this for years! The clerics are the force behind the jihadists. Muslims do not engage in spontaneous behavior; every move they make is choreographed by a demonic imam or mullah. The clerics inculcate the ignorant fools with hate, supremacy, intolerance, and the belief that they are acting on behalf of allah when they kill, lie, torture, and destroy. Anyone who pays attention to current events and still believes that islam is a religion of peace suffers from cognitive dissonance, severe confusion, or delusions. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but surely intelligent, educated people are capable of reading between the lines of politically correct dissimulation and propaganda. Even the biased MSM cannot hide the correlation between islam and extreme violence and irrationality, regardless of the pathetic excuses they make for muslim savages. When people stop believing what their eyes see and their ears hear, there is a serious problem.
When I was growing up, the liberal news media totally dominated; there was no alternative, no competition. They didn't brainwash me, and I watched the news and read the newspaper almost every day! I attended several very liberal universities and emerged unscathed by the left-wing propaganda and Marxist drivel. It went in one ear and out the other.
Most people, regardless of their education levels, possess ample common sense and intuition. I know a few intellectuals, several of whom are relatives, who are bereft of common sense. People who cannot see the forest for the trees usually suffer from selective myopia. If something does not fit into their ideological template, they either contort and spin it until it does; they lionize it; or they ignore it. For different reasons, many people wish to deny the truth about islam. They are cowards.

Truth has been perferted! People do not think critical anymore. They would rather have rose colored glasses on. This history just serves to show that the terrorist breeding ground is functioning as intended. The culture of Islam builds totalitarian states which serve to brainwash and control the masses, using them as human sacrifices for the Islamic war machine.
Folks, I'm sure we have plenty of Muslims over here who believe that our country deserves to be punished. But the great difference between "over here" and "over there" is that we're free from state-run mafia-like Islamic coercion. (At least when Democrats are out of power.)
But groups like CAIR can change that. CAIR can be using these political games as smoke-and-mirrors for mafia work on the streets: tracking U.S. Muslims (extorting them, etc) who otherwise show no loyalty to the Middle-Eastern brotherhood's goals of domination.
After seeing all the Left's obfuscation techniques for 5 years, it takes only a little imagination to see how useful a bunch of fruitless lawsuits could be. The brotherhood can advertise this history (minus the inconvenient truths such as "losing in court") to its constituents and underlings...who probably do not read Drudge, Fox, Boortz, Townhall, Jihadwatch, Mediawatch, LGF, Malkin, etc...for recruiting.

Actually, when you read the Bible, it ends a different way. The USA does not seem to appear in a significant way. All of Islam,with their "Axis" buddies, Russia, China, North Korea, etc. move on Jerusalem AND THEN IT ENDS. THE ONE TRUE GOD, WHO SAYS ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,DOES THEM IN, IN ONE DAY!!!
