Pipes: The West Should Be Free To Criticize Islam

Daniel Pipes hits the nail on the head in the New York Sun:

...The head of the Benedictine order, Abbot Notker Wolf, said the pope's quote was "a blatant allusion to Ahmadinejad," Reuters reported. Vatican insiders told the London Sunday Times that Benedict "was trying to pre-empt an aggressive letter aimed at the papacy by the president of Iran, which was why he cited the debate involving a Persian."

First reflection: Benedict has offered elusive comments, brief statements, and now this delphic quotation, but he has not provided a much-needed major statement on this vital topic of Islam. One hopes it is in the offing....

Second reflection: This new round of Muslim outrage, violence, and murder now has a routine quality. Earlier versions occurred in 1989 (in response to Salman Rushdie's novel "The Satanic Verses"), 1997 (when the U.S. Supreme Court did not take down a representation of Muhammad), 2002 (when Jerry Falwell called Muhammad a terrorist), 2005 (the fraudulent Koran-flushing episode), and this February (the Danish cartoon incident)....

Third reflection: The Muslim uproar has a goal — to prohibit criticism of Islam by Christians and thereby to impose Shariah norms on the West. Should Westerners accept this central tenet of Islamic law, others will surely follow. Retaining free speech about Islam, therefore, represents a critical defense against the imposition of an Islamic order.

Hear, hear. Read it all.

THE world should remain free. Freedom comes with a cost.

and to reference a crosby, stills, nash and young song.

"find the cost of freedom , buried in the ground"

Islam does not want the world to be free.Islam wants to make the world pay.

If they wish to go to their paradise, then we should hurry up and send them there. Europe is being silenced by Islam because the people of Europe have no second ammendment. I will have no quarms about killing an Islamic maniac or protestor who goes too far.

Daniel Pipes is truly SPOT ON!

More Mohammad cartoons.

More jokes about Mohammad and Islam. We need a
bunch of good jokes to make the rounds.

Those should be the first things on the agenda.

I completely empathize with those who'd like to
do harm to our foes, any amount of harm, but
be realistic! There's a lot we can do without
weapons (but be armed too!).

It is the hope of Islamic facists that western civilizations succumb to the threats and intimidation of the Islamic world. And if we do then we are in serious trouble.

Islam does not allow for dicussion, it does not allow for criticism, it does not allow for any voices of reason because Islam is not allowed to be criticised whether perceived as right or wrong inclusively by reasonable critical, and objective analysis.

News that there has been a coup in Thailand. Anyone heard anything about it?

The Muslim outrage over the Pope's academic and factually accurate remarks is yet another indication of Islam's fundamental intolerance and propensity to use just about any excuse to justify violence toward the West.

What is urgently needed is for Western leadership to responsibly resist the temptation for "political correctness" and say it like it is.

OHara

The first round of orchestrated Muslim outrage was in the '20s, when David Low, a famous British cartoonist, included a depiction of Mohammed in a cartoon. Rioting ensued, of course, but Los and the British government refused to offer an apology, so the rioting died out.

A lesson for the apologists of today: give them an inch and they take a mile.

FedUp: Britain lost its cajones sometime between WWII and the 1970s. British culture, like most European cultures is virtually non-existent except in museums. Sir Winston Churchill, the last British Prime Minister that had any amount of testosterone in his body, must be rolling over in his grave twice a day.

Yeah, the Muslims are in league with the PC crowd and the Saudi princes are funding the seriously biased so-called "research" of outright liars like Karen Armstrong, John Esposito, CNN, and the New York Slimes, I mean Times.

When Muhammad was criticised by the poets of his time, he got his followers to have them assassinated. He allowed his followers to use their positions as "friends" to lure them with lies. Some of his victims were old men, nursing women ... many defenseless. One died with her baby when she was nursing.

That pattern has continued ... to this day. This is the Sunna of Muhammad.

Yaqub wrote:

................

Before she was murdered in her sleep by one of Mohammed's cowardly followers, this poet is quoted as admonishing his gang with these words:

"You obey a stranger who encourages you to murder for booty. You are greedy men. Is there no honor amoung you?"

These words were spoken 1400 years ago, but still stand today. Instead of in any way responding to this reasoned rebuke, Mohammed is quoted as saying, "will no one rid me of this woman?"

After her murder, one of his followers seems a bit disturbed, if not by her killing, then at least by the loss of their mother to her children, including the suckling baby mentioned above. Mohammed upbraids him for his weakness (compassion), justifying the violent murder of anyone who questions him or his methods.

News that there has been a coup in Thailand. Anyone heard anything about it?
............

Yes, this is disturbing. There is not a lot of information available so far. My understanding (per Fox News) is that there has been a military coup. The Prime Minister is currently in NYC for the same UN conference that President Bush and the evil Ahmadinijad are attending.

As of now, it is not even clear if the Prime Minister will be allowed to return to Thailand. The Thai King is enourmously powerful and popular there. Whether the coup stands or not will probably come down to his word.

As most JW readers know, Thailand has an ugly Muslim insurgency in the south of the country. I can't imagine that this turmoil, however it turns out, is going to help that situation.

I knew the Prime Minister had had a number of corruption scandles, but I had thought they were fairly minor. He is not that popular in the big cities. Still, I had thought that (though imperfect) that Thailand was a fairly strong democracy at this point.

I am sad to see this happen.

The West should be free to criticize Islam??

Wrong.

The West IS free to critize Islam.

When we discuss freedom of thought and speech in terms of "should be" we have already entered the realm of dhimmitude.

Freedom of speech in America under the First Ammendment in the Bill Of Rights gives us the right to critisize anyone or anything, anytime, anywhere. People who grow up in an environment where there is no freedom of speech or freedom of the press are not accustomed to free thought, freedom of expression, or a free exchange of ideas. It is not that we SHOULD be free to critisaize islam, we ARE free to do it and that is what they can't stand.

Good to see that there are people like Daniel Pipes out there doing their job.
I am also grateful for all of you guys who are not duped by islam and want to fight for our freedom.

The fight goes on!

dear thomas carney and fedup:
please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming you two guys are Americans.
So you guys say the brits have no balls and our culture is washed up? Thanks for that. I'm sure you've based those opinions on years of research.
Here's an illustration of our courage:
http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2006420577,00.html

If you guys are american, the fact that you state that the Brits have no culture is the most ironic statement I have read at JW.
We are your best friends, we are committing our blood and treasure to the fight against radical Islam, and you repay this by suggesting we have no courage or culture?
Your insults have nothing to do with this post, and tactically they alienate the very supporters you currently need in order to lead a global coalition. I think we should just ignore people like you, because you seem to combine General Custer’s tactical skills with the tact of Ahmadinejad. You're actually helping the radical Islamists by dividing the anti-radical Islamic coalition.

protectalbion:

I think the earlier posts which offended you are referring to the very loud left which comes out of the UK and Europe.

I'm perfectly aware of the brave British soldiers who are fighting side by side with us in this war, I have a close friend who is over there and he would make Churchill feel proud.

I wish more staunch Britons would make themselves heard, but I fear that the media there, like here, focuses on what the Left has to say.

Our friendship with the UK is very important to us Americans - it gives us the wisdom of experience, advice and different perspectives.

Regarding the post on British PMs, I beg to differ regarding Churchill being the "last" PM with balls. Margaret Thatcher should be counted as one as well.

Cheers,

atheling
