MOGADISHU, Somalia - Fears of regional conflict soared as angry demonstrations against Somalia's radical Islamic militia grew Monday into deadly violence in a southern port city, and the militia for the first time acknowledged getting help from foreign Muslims.

As it has established authority in the capital and across much of the south starting in June, the Islamic group's strict interpretation of Islam has sparked comparisons with Afghanistan's ousted Taliban. The United States has accused the Islamic group of sheltering suspects in the 1998 al-Qaida bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden has portrayed Somalia as a battleground in his war on the U.S.
Islamic militiamen wearing white headbands opened fire on several thousand people demonstrating against them in the port of Kismayo, 260 miles southwest of Mogadishu, killing a 13-year-old boy, said resident Abdiqadir Filibin.
Two other children were injured, witnesses said on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. Sporadic gunfire could also be heard in other parts of the town.
The militia had seized Kismayo, one of the last remaining ports outside their control and Somalia's third-largest city, on Sunday without a fight.

Hassan Turki, leader of the Islamic militia, told a demonstration in support of his group in Kismayo earlier Monday that foreign militants were helping his fighters.

Somalia has been a mess for a long time. Makes one almost wish for the days when Mussolini ran the place. At least he'd keep these crazies in line.
How can you fire on several thousand people and only manage to kill one and injure 2? Large crowds don't move quickly. I wonder if the real death toll is much higher and somebody is covering this up.
These several thousand people should have brought their AK-47's to dispatch the murdering muslims. I'm sure the brave muslim males would have left very quickly, realizing that people aren't going to take it anymore. Hindsight's 20/20.

The usual muslim double standard, they say if any foreigners come in to Somalia they will fight them, but then the muslims get foreigners to come in to help them. So, their muslim forces are made up of foreigners, but no foreigners can protect the innocent non-muslim.
The State Department is worthless, but why are they not helping out the forces that want to fight these muslims, at the same time prevent another muslim front that is being created. We all know and with recent admittance that the State Dept paid the Pakistanies for participation, and in so doing has gotten us nothing but some crooks. Why not give the money to people that will do something with it, like fight for their lives from muslims, which is the same path we are on so that makes them allies.

I don't know much about the Maldives. Buit I do know it's a tourist destination. This president of yours is aware that he is putting that in jeopardy?
Is there any way your country's non-muftis could split off and start their own country? I guess not! The threat you could turn the "good" non-mufti part into another Israel right in their face would be too much for them to bear!
I for one have crossed off any country with a large mufti presence from my list of future places I'd like to visit. But I'd DEFINITELY travel to a country that results out of a disgust with this inhuman cult that is arising on the planet.

This development is even worse than the article says. Not only is Kismayu or Chisimaio the last southern harbour, it is also at the mouth of the great Giuba river. Baidoa, the seat of the more-or-less legitimate government, is upstream. Thus the government loses its route to the sea and can only hope to be maintained, if at all, through enormously long supply lines from Kenya and Ethiopia, crossing vast deserts crawling with bandits. Unless the Ethiopians intervene as they have been rumoured to, the government is doomed and the Islamic Courts have won - with the results we are already beginning to see.
Hmmmm. Well, I just pray to God the other African countries can see whats happening, wise up, and take the appropriate measures against these people. If even ruthless dictators refuse to stop them, we're doomed.

The "foreign militants" have "restored order" to yet another nation of the world. Color another nation black on the map of the growing Islamic empire. Do I care or did I care? Not bloody likely. My son was approaching draftable age when our soldiers were supposedly protecting these poor Muslims in Somalia & Bosnia/Serbia/et al. I do remember the horror people felt then about these Muslims pleading for help. I tore up my child's application to West Point & the other acadamies. I wouldn't have sacrificed my child for one single Muslim hair. If I'm racist or intolerant, so be it. Donate my blood for one of these sons of jackyls? I don't think so.
