Sharia crackdown in Iran. From the Telegraph, via the Washington Times, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:
LONDON -- Police in Iran's capital, Tehran, have stopped almost 64,000 women and warned them against breaching strict Muslim dress codes in the last month alone. The authorities have chosen the height of summer for a new crackdown to ensure that women cover their heads with veils and their bodies with long, heavy overcoats whenever they are in public.
For years, Iran's police turned a blind eye when young women pushed the boundaries of the rules by wearing the flimsiest of veils or displaying painted toenails in open sandals.
But President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's deeply conservative regime is steadily reversing this trend.
Police in Tehran have been given orders to caution any woman they deem to be "badly veiled." Thousands are being stopped every day.
Sharia crackdown and satellite dishes are verboten now. Have been ripped off buildings. All at the same time that former PM Khatami visits USA for two weeks. Two weeks!
Hardly a coincidence!
State Department approval (that's who I blame) of Katemi gave the Ayatollahs the go signal.
"Cautioning" innappropriately dressed women? Why the extra step? Just beat the whores. They shouldn't be outside anyway.

I would like to see these muslim males wearing long heavy overcoats and a headscarf in 115 degree heat. As a matter of fact, I would LOVE to see the tables turned on these muslim males. They would whine and cry...BOOOOHOOOOOO!!
Exposed toenails! What sort of godless, depraved and morally empty country is Iran running over there?
Exposed TOES! EEEEEEEWWWWWWWW! Tell me that they at least were able to paint them prior to the no TOE dress code!
I wouldn't be caught dead ever wearing my buqua with out polish on my TOES, exposed or not. Wait a minute is painting your TOES allowed in Islam, I get so confused!
This is what makes me a great infidal!
May the fleas of a 1000 camels infest their asses! Spit be upon them!
The universe we live in has a nasty habit of reflecting things back on people: aka what goes around comes around, those who live by the sword die by the sort, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Your times gonna come, religious police.
"... President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's deeply conservative regime.. "
Deeply wrong understanding of "conservative".
"... President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's deeply conservative regime.. "
No! The late Shah's enlightened monarchy was truly conservative. Ahmadinejad and the entire Khomeinist revolutionary government is the very definition of Islamic radicalism.
444 days. Keep Katemi locked up here, blindfolded, for 444 days.
art cove, 444 days of lockup ina county club prison for khatmi isn't going to work. what i favor is 444 days of nonstop bombing of all Iran militery, industrial, and nuke sites. this will get their attention.
I don't buy the bullshits that Iranian people are modern and are fed up with the government.
They are OK with it, like the far majority of muslims. Muslim mind is so weak that it needs to be controlled by a superior entity.
How sadly ironic it is that the one country that produces good looking Moslimas would cloak them.
Some a them Afghani women look perdy good..
but they're all so religious...
A boy from my neighborhood who spent many days growing up in my family room (the room of boys, no adults allowed unless chaos breaks out whence a red-faced Alarmed Pig Farmer broke through the door to restore necessary order) spent two years in Afghanistan.
He was in the Rangers, special operations, basically a trigger man with cross-hairs on misbehaving Afghani tribalists.
The third time his detachement saw a woman, hanging by their bound wrists, being beaten and stoned to death by crazed mobs of Moslem men with erections, they unloaded with a few hundred rounds; tragically several devout Moslems perished in the fusillade.
Needless to say, they were severely reprimanded by command and reassigned to highway security patrol duty in Iraq. But the Moslima's life was saved.
That's what mathematicians call a negative ratio.

I would propose a anti-muslim dress code in the US.
No head scarves, no long coats during the warm seasons, no islamic style clothes.
Nearly lost my cool yesterday when a car pass me up with the Lebanon flag on the car's antenna. In my mind, what it probably means, the car owner support for hizbollah not support for the country of Lebanon.
What do you expect, I was on Michigan ave in Dearbornstan.
Alarmed Pig Farmer great story, we need more of them.
What happened to the woman? I feel that there's no hope and she wasn't that grateful after all. Maybe among those men killed there was a male member of her family...
Too bad you don't like "conservativism" exposed for what it is, but the fact is that Islam is "deeply conservative" just as most of the Christian Right and Orthodox Judaism.. it's reality live with it, embrace and own it, it is what you are.
From the Oxford English Dictionary:
conservative adj. & n.
— adj.
1a averse to rapid change. b (of views, taste, etc.) moderate, avoiding extremes (conservative in his dress).
2(of an estimate etc.) purposely low; moderate, cautious.
The Mullahs and Ahmadinejad are deeply conservative, as are the right wing fanatics that hang on every word of Oreilly, limpball and prostrate themselves at the feet of their clerics and the Repugnican National Committee.. No different in reality than the doltish left wingers who "bleed" for those insane killers called Jihadi's and "insurgents"
1a averse to rapid change. b (of views, taste, etc.) moderate, avoiding extremes (conservative in his dress).
2(of an estimate etc.) purposely low; moderate, cautious.
Well Nariz, that description does not fit well with the Iranian regime.
They are not opposed to rapid change. They brought in this murderous regime overnight. Remember how this whole thing started in 1979 and the hostage crisis? And in our society muslims seeks to change us as fast as possible.
They are obviously not moderate. They obviously do not avoid extremes. It is an extremist regime. Everything about them is extremist.
And they certainly are not cautious. The Iranian regime has been playing fast and loose with international law and they are risking a military strike by the sheer virtue of their brash and arrogant nature.
So no, this is not a conservative regime. It is a wild, crazy regime.
This is also a socialist regime. Like Hitler's regime. A conservative does not want the government involved at all with the personal lives of the citizens. That is the founding principal of political conservatism. In the islamic world, and especially in Iran and Saudi Arabia, the government tells the people even how to dress.
There is nothing conservative about Iran or islam. It is a murderous marxist-style socialist ideology with a religious twist.
And this is why all the great leftist forces have risen to defend it. The radical feminists, the ACLU, Hugo Chavez, the anti-war protestors, the anti-Israel lobby, Noam Chomsky, all on the side of Islam.
Take off your blinders and do some homework on political theory. As a leftist, you are one of probably three leftists in the world who are opposed to islam. All your leftist brothers and sisters would disown you if they knew you were anti-islam and on this site.
Don't believe me? Go to a left wing rally, any left wing cause, i.e.; "anti-poverty", ACLU, feminism, illegal immigrats, student activism, NAACP, you name it, and carry a DOWN WITH ISLAM sign and you will get attacked and beaten to a pulp.
Are they enforcing dress codes for men?
According to Mohammed in the hadiths and other sources, men are not allowed to wear bright colors, their pants must not cover their ankles, and gold chains are verboten. A beard is mandatory.
Here is a fatwa from Ask Iman.com
Salaam I would like to know what is the fatwa regarding the folding of the pants during namaaz.
Answer 18519 2006-08-25
The pants of a male should be above the ankles at all times. There are severe warnings mentioned in the Ahaadith regarding those men who allow their trousers to fall below their ankles.
It is mentioned in one Hadith that Allah Ta’ala will not even cast a glance of mercy of the day of Qiyaamat towards that person who allows his trousers to fall below his ankles. (Muslim Hadith290). In another Hadith, it is mentioned that whatever clothing falls below the ankles, that portion will be in the fire of hell. (Bukhari Hadith5787)
It is mentioned in another Hadith that Allah does not accept the Salaat of that person whose trousers is below his ankles. From the above mentioned narrations, we learn the severity of the sin of letting one’s garments reach below the ankles, one should ensure at all times that his pants is above his ankles. If the trousers is so long that it reaches below one’s ankles, it should be folded, especially at the time time of Salaat, for Allah Ta’ala does not accept the Salaat of that person whose trousers is below his ankles.

Pelayo; I've been enjoying Mufti Ebrahim Desai's take on the world periodically for the last few weeks. It seems that I can only get through one out of four or five times though. Is this a problem with my computer or, perhaps an overloaded site?
Engaging discussions covering allowable shaving techniques for personal areas and the ethics of copulation with slaves in today's society. Eye-opening.
Back on topic. There was a saying in the Middle East not too long ago that, the further away from Mecca one found himself, the better.
It seems like the ideology is spreading. BMOs (Black Moving Objects AKA females on the street) sound like they've spread from Saudi to lands beyond. The battle lines are being drawn.
Hm...I know 2 Iranian, Muslim, females, at the university I attend...their scarves are always half off their heads, they wear (gasp!) floppies with toe rings, tight jeans...I sure hope Ahmadinejad doesn't find out about this, I'd hate to see Tucson be the first city to go up, courtesy of an Iranian nuke.
The dress code for the immans and their religious police should be a Straight Jacket and medevial male chastity belt ....padlock keys to the wives...so they may resit the severe temptation of Painted Toenails !!
Persia ...a once magnificent country with the most aesthetically pleasing women ...reduced to living in a Black Bin Bag culture....it makes you weep !!
Check out the blog of Lady Sun for an Iranian woman's inside view. She has pictures and notes from a July women's rights demonstration violently suppressed by black moving objects with batons. A particularly horrible huge wrestler-like woman seemed to be leading the women's police force. Lovely to see that women can have careers in Iran!
Pardon me while I wax Fergusotic, but this is it - the solemn truth of women's liberation in islam. There is no compunction in islam, of course, because there is no rebellion in slavery. Else the slave be free; and that cannot be permitted.
The law requires that the moon god mandate be carried out and 64,000 tickets later it is. And if 64,000 beatings, or fines, or beheadings are required, then they will be. But sharia/islam is not robotic; it, too, adapts. There is no need to kill, not right away. There can be more beatings and more ticketing and more subtle economic pressure and more subtle emotional pressure and more Q 4: 11 "beat them and set them apart" or whatever the heinous script reads precisely. And, as I've said elsewhere: rinse the wounds, slather with the threat of divine retribution (O! Ye idolaters!) and familial segregation and legal punishment, and repeat, and repeat and repeat and repeat.
And again, and keep on that until women 'know their place' and all religion is for Allah. Why would we think that women must ever somehow be liberated there? Has that historically been our species' natural order? Is there some self-evident mechanism that, acting in machina, must inevitably drive societies such as those to recognize women's rights, like the mantra of a discarded dialectic? Might makes right in islam.
I wonder what that vast, vast body of 'moderation' that is the ummah makes of our conversations here: daring to defend women's rights in the face of that 'perfect' of religions founded by that 'perfect' of men, the al-insan al-kamil. Do they view us and our 'perverted' intentions on the same level as we view, say, those promoting paedophilia? What idolaters and hypocrites they must be! Will they acknowledge the possibility that we are, in fact, right? Will they even notice our sarcasm?
It makes one wonder at the nature of the argument, and the Beast. Slouches it towards Bethlehem, it's hour come round?
Not in this age, no.
Prophet Geoff
Lili's above comment is particularly insightful in the above regard: why not set the women to punish each other? Let the Party monitor the Party. George Orwell would have sold a great many books using such a comparison. I rather expect he'd have been threatened with a fatwa.
Prophet Geoff
Nariz,
The descriptor "deeply" can have degrees.
One can characterize both an Olympic swimming pool, and the Mariana Trench of the Pacific Ocean, as "deep". But the latter is far deeper than the former.
Thus, conservatives of the Christian Right who watch O'Reilly over the mound of their fat American bellies while sitting back in their lazyboy recliners may be characterized as "deeply" conservative, just as Iranian Muslims who support hanging a 16-year-old girl for sexual misconduct may be characterized as "deeply" conservative -- but surely, you can see that the latter is far deeper than the former, and surely, you can see that such a significant difference in degree matters, and reflects upon the wider sociopolitical culture of secularism that not only surrounds and limits our conservatives of the Christian Right, but also has become maturely accepted by them to a degree unthinkable in the case of the Islamic conservative.

Large oopsie:
"Wax Fergusotic really ought to have been "wax Fitzgeraldistic".
As a prophet, I probably should have foreseen that.
Although Fergusotic sounds better.
Hugh, could you change your name to serve my meagre modern meme?
Prophet Geoff
Look on the bright side; their crime rate, IE, bombings, rape, theift, must be very low, in order for their police to be concerned of the exposure of someones toenails.
Would it were. Regrettably, rape rates in Iran are quite high; when four muslim witnesses are required to prove rape, there would appear to be little real defense for women.
Prophet Geoff
But Pig Farmer Friend,
What about the civilians? Weren't those poor fellows in the lynch mob just poor civilians? Mere innocents, unarmed and innocuous?
What about their rights under the 1948 Geneva IV and 1907 Hague Conventions? Could you please ask your Ranger friend to call Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch?
