Srdja Trifkovic eulogizes my late and much-missed friend Oriana Fallaci at Chronicles:
Of course she prompted countless howls of rage from coast to coast and from one side of the Atlantic to another, among the degenerates, cowards, masochists, madmen, and villains. (Christopher Hitchens, who is all of the above, has described Fallaci’s work as “a sort of primer in how not to write about Islam.”) They can relax now, and write mean-spirited obituaries of this “controversial author” who’s been “harshly criticized” for “inciting hatred against Islam.” She will be sorely missed by those of us who know what she knew, and who abhor what she abhorred.
Read it all.
I myself answered those "degenerates, cowards, masochists, madmen, and villains" in the person of Boston Globe writer Cathy Young, who may be none of those things but is certainly a blinkered dhimmi, here, here, and here.
Alas, we will not soon see another like you, Oriana.
I find it sad and ironic that Oriana Fallaci should have a eulogy written about her by a political commentator who has given a sympathetic ear to figures such as the British National Party's Nick Griffin.

This weekend, on radio, Barbara Simpson did a very good account of Orianna, recommending both 'The Rage & the Pride' and 'The force of Reason'. On a different note, it might have been intriguing to see her reaction to the ummah's assaults on the Pope.
Speaking of Srdja (how does one pronounce it, BTW, if one isn't going with his anglicized 'Serge'?) Trifkovic, I'm reading his book 'The sword of the Prophet'. I just finished the first chapter on Mohammed, and am wondering - will Robert's upcoming book be a lot more detailed about every aspect of his life?
Halldor
Trifkovic is a genuine expert on Islam in his own right, and can only be described as political if you regard Islam itself as a politcal ideology, rather than a religion. Regardless of what exchange he had with Nick Griffin, that's not why he is (or should be) famous.
Infidel Pride
I think that militant Islam is quite certainly a political ideology - to be ranked along with Fascism and Communism, both of which Ms. Fallaci bravely opposed in her lifetime.
The name "Srdja" is pronounced
Ser-dya
It's a Serbian name.

Okay, I see what you mean (and actually agree as far as Islam goes), but I still think that calling Trifkovic a political commentator is a bit of a stretch.
Thanks for the pronunciation tip.
I'm not sympathetic to the BNP, but in the
interview above (admittedly a soft interviewer)
Griffin didn't say anything I thought was beyond
the pale. If a group with such an unsavory past
is now gaining in poularity perhaps that is a
sign that frustrated voters are not well served
by the ruling parties?
root_cause
It's the irony and incongruity of such an interviewer praising Fallaci, who fought against Fascism all her life, that bothers me.
halldor,
Any reasonable, intelligent person reading that interview with Nick Griffin would, as I did, come away with finding nothing objectionable about what he said, and finding much intelligence, perspicuity and common sense there.

The British National Party, like certain other parties in the UK (Respect is another example), is devoted to anything but "intelligence, perspicuity and common sense".
Srdja Trifkovic and Chronicles should not be offering a platform to such a group.
It's sad to see some of the "supporters" the brave and outspoken Oriana Fallaci has attracted.
I've read some derogatory criticism of Trifkovic (and not from Muslims but from Roman Catholics), and tended to dismiss them as inter religious warfare and the usual millenia long antagonism between the Roman and Orthodox Church.. but I no longer hold that view.
I am aghast, very puzzled that Serge depicts Christopher Hitchens as "degenerates, cowards, masochists, madmen, and villains.".
Evidently he never saw the debate between Hitchens and George (Arafat) Galloway..if anyone is interested they can google it.
Hitchens is as much an "Islamophobe" as any on this forum, I fault him for backing the neo con agenda, and then following the lead of Bush, by not saying I was wrong, I screwed up.
I heard an interesting interview, a debate between Tariq Ali and Christopher Hutchens, the only thing that they agreed on was that Islam (hence muslims) were sexually repressive (repressed), you can google Tariq Ali and Christopher Hitchens and read that debate.. So why Serge is on Hitchens case is beyond me..
Now as a "liberal" I have ample criticisms of Hitchens (except when it comes to his depiction of and attitude towards Islam), and If Hitchens said of Fallaci “a sort of primer in how not to write about Islam.”, it wasn't a criticism but a factual statement.. if you don't want to get into trouble, have your life and fortune threatened then don't write anything negative about Islam or Muhammad.. and that is why Mr. Spencer has to be careful about where he is or lives, and never visit a Muslim country.

But after reading Serge's depiction (a trite one at that) of Hitchens I'm not so sure that the criticisms are unjust, for anything at all his depiction of Hitchens was unjust. Hitchens deserves to be criticized, but for different reasons. I hold Hitchens in disdain because he was an vocal partisan advocating invasion of Iraq, and remains unrepentant and tries to justify "staying the course"..
