As Mr. Bostom put it, "Will such Muslim authorities at least recognize the acute predicament of Centanni and Wiig by issuing a fatwa stating that their 'conversion,' being under duress, was not bona fide, condemning in advance any Muslim who might now attack these journalists for 'apostasy' from Islam?"Yes, of course, they should -- at least according to any Western understanding of compulsion and morality -- but don't hold your breath. Meanwhile, holding their breath is exactly what Western media are doing when it comes to covering (not covering) the story. Even Fox's Greta van Susteren, a tabloidesque host who never met a bodily fluid she couldn't elaborate on, went delicate on us the other night, failing, in a one-hour "exclusive" interview with the two men, to ask a single question about their religious ordeal -- presumably at their request.
Why? Who or what is served by shutting up? Only forces of coercion -- a word which, after all, implies the nullification of individual will. Which means this is one case where silence isn't golden and ignorance isn't bliss. They are dangerous and dumb.

Muslims demonstrate just how circular, irrational and evil the belief system is.
Islam is a closed circle, consistent in itself as to the ways and means. It's the same old thing: might makes right from the lowliest male muslim all the way up to the Supreme Macho, allah.
The time is coming when anyone in the free world condoning the belief system or spewing the provided platitudes will be called out or at least dismissed as an idiot. Welcome to the machine... the wheels are turning.

I was listening to a discussion on a religious program concerning whether one should or could make such profession under threat to your life, that such profession was excusable as long as one doesn't believe it in one's heart etc. For Christians what is in the heart is of
paramount importance.

The history of Islamic conquest is the history of the forced embrace of Islam. The rules of Jihad are clear, invitation first (to embrace Islam) if they refuse, then war. This was repeated from Iraq to Persia from Egypt to Sudan. When Abu Sufyan of Mecca is brought to Mohammad he is told to confess Islam. When he expresses doubt that Mohammad is God's Apostle Mohammad tells him: "Accept Islam and testify that Mohammad is the Apostle of God before
your neck is cut off by the sword." Abu Sufyan then professes the faith and becomes a Muslim.
Did he believe it in his heart? Did that matter to Mohammad?
Dr. Muhammad al-Buti, al- Azhar scholar in "The
Jurisprudence of Muhammad's Biography" commenting on this episode feels some people will protest who believe faith ought not be imposed by the threat of death:
"What is required of an Infidel or one who confuses other gods with God, is to have his tongue surrender to the religion of God and to subdue himself to the prophethood of Muhammad. But his heartfelt faith is not required at the beginnning. It will come later."
The important thing was the act of submission to Islam in professing the faith and the threat of apostasy thereafter, a permanent gun to one's head.
The two reporters went to journalism school decades ago, probably with the idealistic goal of changing the world. They’ve spent their adult lives parading around the world in the name of ‘reporting’. The events of their capture, conversion, and release thrust them to the forefront of the biggest story of our times. They stepped up to the plate, and didn’t even swing the bat.
They are either scared, blind, or converted. In any case, the story got across pretty clearly.

I have a strange feeling that the muslims put forth a very convincing and believable threat to these two. Letting them know "you better not recant".
The only thing that would be that convincing would have been if they someone here in the US close to their families was able to pass information...(my theory).

And don't forget even the embattled war veteran and special forces officer Oliver North was so convinced of a threat that he recieved from a group of muslims that he used Federal funds to put in electronic security at his own home. Who was the threat from? Osama Bin Laden. Who was the politician that discredited Oliver North in hearings and laughed at him for fearing a muslim on American soil? That would be then Senator Al Gore. Read the transcripts of the hearings.
Wow, that's fascinating about the Ollie North hearings, alaskan1000. There is no doubt that the prospect of being beheaded or blown to bits is intimidating to westerners. We just aren't used to that kind of barbarism. Interesting comment I've read here is that Muslim families have the young boys slaughter the animals during their festivals, so the boys get used to hacking body parts and spilling red, warm, blood. Another interesting aspect of the islamic culture, but quite horrific if you happen to fall into their clutches.

What a contrast to those Jehovah's Witnesses who were imprisoned during World War II and in 1967 in the United Arab Republic for refusing to renounce their God. It matters not what is in your "heart" but the public vindication of the God you affirm. Their former God has left these men.

Either way read the archives to verify that it is in the hearings. If you get the video you will even see Senator Al Gore trying to get everyone to laugh at the pronounciation of "Osoma Bin Laden" and implying how rediculous Ollie North is to be scared of someone by this name.
I am only speculating here, but it increasingly appears that "Western" media has a tacit understanding with the Arabs and Islam in general -- immunity within Muslim domains from the normal or average threats and duress which most infidels would face is granted to them if only the media agrees to turn a somewhat blind eye to the bigotry, hatred, and ugliness of the Muslim and Arab culture in general. As this cultural collision intensifies we are seeing more obvious examples of this reality. The CNN/Jordan revelations, Jill Carroll's absurdism, and now Centanna and Wiig, etc. George Orwell would marvel as these Western media figures wallow in prostration and compete to heap lavish praise on a culture and people that broils with open hatred, backwardness, and violence. Why praise them when they deserve the opposite?
I am sure that on an individual level the things these compromised people say about Islam, Arabs, and Muslims in general may be a little bit true -- there may be a certain kind of closeness between their Muslim handlers and enablers and the Western Media after all -- people are not stone -- yet I must wonder to what extent they extrapolate those flattering meals and solicitations to meet cousin Ahmed and the whole extended tribe, a socialization which occurs as much a function of genuine kindness as it may be a function of money, local prestige and bragging rights, or employment. Surely these media figures are not sheltered from the larger and AMPLE animosity which is borne towards them and their Western culture on an obvious and gargantuan political and cultural basis. The evidence that they are hated abounds in Arab Muslim lands, yet they continue to chortle the sweet nothings about the "beauty of Islam" and the "kindness of the Arabs".
To tell "their story", Westerners have clearly co-opted their flexible journalistic principles pertaining to Arabdom and Islamdom. They have agreed to pull their punches in a way we never see them doing when the target of their attention is anything Western. No indeed.
When their razor intellects and all-seeing all-knowing cynical eyes turn towards us there is no end to their chest thumping righteousness, their willingness to say that they'd "die for the truth", their eagerness to upturn every rock to reveal and magnify anything they might find crawling there. We even see them revealing bogeymen where there are none when it comes to reporting on us. But the Arabs and the Muslims get all the passes, and that's the price Western Media pays for access.
Change the latitude to the Middle East and Southeast Asia and all those brave men and women with their finely honed "reporter's instincts" transform into the most craven simps and cowards. They writhe in a perverted debasement to gain access -- their "truth telling" turns into lies and obliquity, and we, their hapless readers, are required to fill in giant blanks or make paranoid seeming extrapolations in order to make any meaningful sense out of their fatuous reporting.

First time to comment on here, but i read it all the time. Just had to say the Oliver North story is true, i saw a lot of that on T.V when it was happening. I admire that man. Real American sort of guy.

Even if it had been true, I still would have thought that using government money to install a $16,000 home security system for Oliver North (that part is true) to protect him from Osama Bin Laden would have been a pretty good deal for Oliver North, not so good for the rest of us.

Jesus told us that we would "know them by their fruit". All we need to do is turn on the tv or read the news about the barbaric nature of Islam and how twisted they are in their thinking. Their fruit is evil/demonic and rotten. Even secular people I know are able to see that Islam is awful. The only people who keep lying about the nature of Islam is our politicians! We can recognize their fruit too!
My post was in reference to the subject of forced conversion. That is the context for the observation that Islam doesn't care what is in your heart when you submit "with your tongue." I think that is self-evident from the example given involving Mohammad and the commentary from the revered al-Azhar scholar: "belief will come later."
What is the point of "invite them to Islam, if they refuse, fight them"? Is that not forced conversion?
