That describes Europe's grim Middle Ages, but medieval scholar Eric
Jager says it also describes the United States in 2006, in an era
many Americans consider to be a glorious information age of technological
wonders.
"The word modern was actually coined by medieval people to distinguish themselves from the ancients," Jager writes in the Los Angeles Times.
Or, as one of Jager's history students said, "Medieval people were
so ignorant, they had no idea they were living in the Middle Ages."
During those long dark centuries between the Roman Empire's decline
and the Renaissance, corrupt and amoral popes ruled Europeans with lies and terror. Kings were notoriously and proudly stupid.
Parish priests were whoremongers and crooks. Scientists and magicians -- they were one and the same -- practiced their arts hidden from the Christian mobs and sadistic Inquisitors.
To avoid revolt, popes and kings sent Europe's healthy young men and
even children off to faraway Arab lands to plunder or die trying.
Yet it wasn't until the Renaissance era that historians realized just how pathetic things had become during the Dark Ages.
"The Renaissance stole the label of modernity for itself and invented a prior 'middle age' when classical civilization lay dormant, awaiting a glorious rebirth," Jager says. "The Enlightenment made the 'barbaric' and 'superstitious' Middle Ages seem even more obsolete."
While ignorance, poverty and fear were all most people knew in the Middle Ages, technological progress raced onward.
The inventions and advances of medieval Europe -- Gutenberg's printing press, banking, navigation, wheelbarrows, mirrors, magnets, rudders, soap, shoes and stirrups and harnesses for horses, eyeglasses, windmills, spinning wheels, and the adoption of foreign technologies such as Arabic math and astronomy and Chinese gunpowder -- made our "modern era" possible.
But the gadgets themselves couldn't make medieval Europeans any less
stupid or savage. That wouldn't begin to happen until the late 13th
century in Florence, where the Italian Renaissance began, and up to
two centuries later in the most barbaric parts of northern Europe.
Five centuries later, Europe would again plunge into darkness as the
German masses used the latest and greatest technology to murder millions of people and destroy much of what had been built.
"Like our gadgets, we ourselves are only temporarily modern, and that label will be taken from us very soon," Jager writes.
"What sort of mirror will later generations find in us? The people
of the future, looking back on our violent and benighted era, may decide

That was very interesting and some of what was posted was true. The main reason that Europe was plunged into the dark ages was that the corrupt Catholic Church, and it's corrupt Popes ruled for over five hundred years. In the middle ages, the worse thing that could happen to a person was to be 'put under the permanent protection of the Church'. That meant that you got to live in a dungeon and be tortured untill you die. To suggest that society is slipping backwards is to indulge in the most dangerous pessimistic, paranoia. Islamic society cant slip backwards because it has never moved forward to begin with. Islam is still in the middle ages...never left the 6oo's AD, and is stuck there. God has given humans a paradise to live in, but it is a diamond in the rough. It is up to us to refine it and reduce or eliminate the natural dangers. Science and medicine are doing exactly that. I agree with some of your scenarios. Al-Mahdi doesn't have to come out of the well. Muslims (Sunnis and Shiites) already claim that he is walking among men now. And also, since they are going to "recognize" him in Mecca, that is not too difficult also. Just gather a group of people of Syria and proclaimed themselves the abdaals (see... a group of Sufis are already preparing themselves for this). Then when the time is ripe, they can appoint someone called Muhammad (or variants like Ahmad, Mahmoud, etc).
The pillow-heads are just whistling in the dark. Listening to them talk about the coming Mahdi and how he will straighten everything out is like listening to enormously obese people talking about the latest fad diet. Or some jobless deadbeat talking about what he'll do when he wins lottery.

It's time we had an objective investigation into Islam and its teachings. I have read a lot in recent years about Islam and it's teachings, and one thing I came away with was the feeling that the main players in this religion (from mohammed to armani dinner jacket) are out for personal gain, whether it be in the form of money, women/girls, or power. It seems more cult-like than religious, it has all the ingredients used by cults to ensure obedience by it's followers. Violence and deceit seem to be at the core of islam, in fact violence and deceit are quoted by mohammed as not only acceptable but required of a good muslim.

This passage has resulted in the murder of millions of people across the globe and it is an integral Islamic doctrine. Because it originates from al-lah (Muslims' idea of God) it is non-negotiable and cannot be excised. To this day this Kuranic passage is an integral part of the Islamic nations' legal codes. It is murder in accordance by anyone else's standards, yet it is part and parcel of the Islamic world. It's no wonder Islam is responsible for so much terrorism.

One of the postings above inexplicably quotes from a newspaper article declaring the advent of a "New Middle Ages." I have scratched my head over this non-sequitur. Is the poster trying to comment on the imminent reappearance of the Mahdi through the roundabout approach of describing somebody else's take on what happened in Europe in the Middle Ages?
Certainly there is much to think about. The Middle Ages followed the Dark Ages, that period of time following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and during which Western Europe was beset by problems arising from poor social and political structure: lawlessness, raids from pagan Vikings and invasions from Moors and other Moslem interlopers. The Middle Ages saw the spread of order, stability and learning. The writings of Aristotle came back to Europe from their Moslem caretakers. I suppose that Europeans should have been grateful that the Moslems took care of this work after having acquired it, but it also makes me wonder how many works of the Greco-Roman civilization didn't survive the Moslem onslaught.
Instead, during the Middle Ages the Europeans very ungratefully stiffened their resistance against the invading Moslems, preferring in their error and darkness to build cathedrals in Chartres, Paris, Cologne, York and in countless other locations throughout Europe. I'm quite happy they did, actually. Thomas Acquinas ungratefully used the newly repatriated works of Aristotle to provide a basis to the Summa Theologica (anybody care to start a side thread discussing the roles of faith and reason?) Were there gross injustices during the Middle Ages? Undoubtedly. But somehow, out of the Middle Ages, there sprang the little social phenomena called the Renaissance and the Reformation.
In the former, the cultural legacy of the Greco-Roman civilization was rediscovered, in the latter the Old and New Testaments were made available for all to read and understand by means of that Medieval invention: the printing press. The result? The injustices perpetrated by Churchmen were seen to be at odds with the Gospel and at the same time the reblossoming of thought and conscience revitalized Western culture.
When the Mahdi makes his appearance, perhaps he will be so kind as to revitalize and reform Islamic culture in a similar way. But that's the only connection I can see between him and the Middle Ages, frankly.
Islam has taken Europe and the USA off guard since religion is absurd to most those who run things.
The USA wants to play the bank on religion and seems to think of 'em as a collection of quaint toys upon a shelf it allows the citizens to play with.

This is the serious time and I am surprised that everyone can make humor about this. You may be slightly aware of the Madhi i.e. who he is, what he is to do, etc.
This is huge on the futuristic scale. I suggest you actually read up on this Madhi and be aware of what will be happening. Once he is revealed to be in 'contact' there is turning back for him coming onto the scene, although we don't know how long they will play this out.

I lived in Saudia Arabia for a number of years, and I remember being told that some muslim men tied a knot in their thobe around the left leg. Anything I know about the role of monks, Irish or otherwise, is retained from a reasonably thorough parochial school education, so the real scholars may smile a smile at some of the things I say. Christian monks in general did an incalculable service in preserving the best of Roman civilization until the worst of the tumult known as the Dark Ages was over, characterized by the twin imprecations of pagan and Moslem piracy. Irish monks in particular did much to bring the Gospel to the northern pagans. However, I recall that Aristotle's works were repatriated from the east where they had been preserved and read.
Actually, I earlier expressed a concern over what may not have survived the Moslem onslaught. Then it came to me. One need only travel to Greece or the Aegean coast of Turkey to view the smashed statuary, viewed as haram by the Moslem conquerors. The ashes of burnt volumes are much harder to trace.
The more I read about the mahdi, the more I've come to believe that Mohammad was a very early version of L. Ron Hubbard. But not as talented.
That being said, I don't doubt that those who are waiting for the mahdi are completely serious, and are at this very moment, orchestrating a nice piece of theater for global consumption.

Some time ago, at Jihad Watch, a poem by Vladislav Felitsianovich Khodasevich, a Russian poet who died in the emigration in 1939, was put up: "In Front of the Mirror" ("Pered Zerkalom"). It contained these lines:

Why is this a surprise, I proved to Shia yesterday ahmadinjad is the new prophet at least as far as the Shia muslims are concerned. Second, it is interesting that the 1000 years is brought up. What most do not realise is that the Scriptural sense of 1000 is that it is a perfect number. There is no timing on when any of this will happen. If Muslims believe that the Madhi will come back after 1000 years of being in a well, then they are relying upon a man made story and interpretation of Scripture that has been stolen from the Christians.

Jesus did say that we would not know the "day or the hour" of His return -- but that isn't all that Jesus said about his second coming.
He also said that we would know the general time or "season" of His return; and if a person is paying close attention, then they can see that His coming is very near. Jesus gave one key sign leading up to His return, and that was the parable of the fig tree; and in scripture, the fig tree always represents Israel.
Jesus also said that the "generation" that sees Israel become a nation is THAT generation. Well, in 1948, Israel became a nation. Hmmm. The question that none of us really knows is this -- how long is a generation?
Jesus also said that His coming would be like the "days of Noah". What happened in Noah's day? Well, Noah trusted God and built the ark and told him to warn others; but the people he tried to warn didn't want to hear what he had to say. 100 years later, when the ark was complete, it started to rain -- and rain -- and rain. Noah wasn't in the dark -- no -- Noah was in the ark.
