Head In The Sand Alert: "'Hamas doesn't want to destroy Israel,'" by David Horovitz for the Jerusalem Post:
Hamas wants to "liberate the Palestinians," not to destroy Israel, Javier Solana, the European Union's foreign policy chief, told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday. In an interview following his talks in Tel Aviv with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Solana insisted that it was "not impossible" for Hamas to change and "recognize the existence of Israel." History had shown that people and nations "adapt to reality," he said. "I don't want to lose hope."
Many, many others in the West are in Solana's position. They would rather believe arrant fantasies than face uncomfortable realities.
Pressed as to whether he was underestimating the fundamentalist religious imperative at the heart of the Hamas ideology, Solana said, "I cannot imagine that the religious imperative, the real religious imperative, can make anybody destroy another country... Therefore that is an abuse of religion..."I don't think the essence of Hamas is the destruction of Israel. The essence of Hamas is the liberation of the Palestinians," he added. "The liberation of their people, not the destruction of Israel."
"Solana said, "I cannot imagine that the religious imperative, the real religious imperative, can make anybody destroy another country"
solana, thanks for proving you're another of the full blown idiots composing the politburo of bruxelles.
Sure, they do 'recognise the existence of Israel', they just want to end that existence. It would help if these EU and UN people started clearly stating what is needed.
Excuse my ignorance here, but is Solana not a Spaniard?
Does he not know his own country's history?
It's always astounding to see the amount of stupidity that freely flows from the EU. Idiot after idiot finds a way into positions of power and influence in Europe, yet common sense always eludes.
I read recently that Francis Ferdinand III was removed as the patron Saint of Spain's annual festival. This was done because his record against the Moors in battle was upsetting to Muslim's.
What a crock of crap, way to go Javier, you're absolutely right, in spite of Hamas' constitution stating it will annihilate Israel all is good.
Niv
he's probably portuguese
Relax, he is telling the truth. They just want all the Jews dead so they can take over Israel. No one wants to destroy Israel, feel better?
What does he say when anyone mentions al-Qaeda's recruiting efforts within Spain, to reconquer al-Andalus?

Solana, Patten, Mary Robinson, Miguel Moratinos, Prodi in his previous EU incarnation -- they are the very worst that European political life produces, and of course they end up in, and rise high within, the bureacracy of the E.U., a project that entails minimizing or even effacing differences among nation-states, by minimizing or even effacing in some casees nationalist loyalties, national languages, literatures, and histories. A monstrous idea, monstrously implemented.
Solana is at the top of the list. He is stupid. His stupidity, or certitude about things he does not know and about which he does not wish to know -- he's rather bet the entire future of the West on his expressed need to "hope" -- is of the kind impervious to new information, impervious to reason working on that new information. This kind of stupidity grades by degrees into cruelty and evil. That is the kind Solana possesses, or that oppresses Solana. And it is the same with many of the other E.U. and U.N. bureaucrats, present or past, listed above.
Hugh minces no words, as usual. Solana is stupid for sure, since he cannot even see that the opposition he sets up for Hamas is not of mutually exclusive possibilities, but identical goals. Hamas indeed wants the liberation of Palestinians, but liberation from what? From Israel, of course! Duh.
Until the Israelis abandon the holy lands entirely, leaving Jerusalem to the Mohammedans, Palestinians will be "oppressed." This type of stupidity, as Hugh has it, is pervasive today, especially in the EU, but for the life of me I don't see how anyone can be that stupid.
I confess that until I discovered Walid Phares, Ibn Warraq, Robert Spencer, Jihad Watch and all the rest after 9/11, I was pretty stupid too, but it has been several decades since I entertained any delusions about the Palestinian cause, and no sane person can possibly consider Solana's comments in earnest. I heard Moshe Dayan talk in the seventies in Cleveland, and afterwards I never held out, not even in my most optimistic moments, anything like Solana's naive "hope" for coexistence between Palis and Jews.
Hugh's metaphor of Solana's hope as a "bet" on "the entire future of the West" is almost spot on, except it is more like a desperate all-in bluff than a simple value bet.
I'm not buying it.
I call with all my chips.
HAID
Solana is a weakling who tries to please everyone. Because of his naivety or stupidity he achieves nothing. One has to be living in a world of illussions to seriously believe that one can please both Tyrians and Trojans.
He is not the type of leader Europe needs now and should have stepped down long ago.
Man, what a blind, utter fool. They just can't come to terms with it. And anyways, what was it...Six Wars against Israel? They didn't mean those. Even when they invaded during Yom Kippur...they simply wanted to spread the festive cheer! And even though they are launching missles into southern Israel, they don't mean it...they're just saying hello, the Islamic way!
Dear Lord. These stupid people make me sick. Where are the Winston Churchill's? Where are the War Mongers when you need them? Where are all the strong leaders?
The West has been Pussified. We MUST toughen up. Or perish.
I thought that the EU was formed for economic reasons and not political ones.
This Solana is just another unelected EU bureaucrat. What does he mean by liberation of Palestine? Those people have been free to build their own economy. They have been free to develop the land they're on. They have been free to elect leadership that will permit them to do so. What's their problem? Liberation from what? Come on Solana tell me?
I guessed that I missed the boat somewhere.
My step-son just sent me a notice about an online version of Fantasy Congress. Sounds like the real one.
May I should join and start legislation to deport all Muslims.
God willing, of course.
The E.U. Foreign Minister is blind.
The difference between the two is significant and should not be belittled. Know exactly who you are dealing and what his intentions are.
Solana is a scum of the earth hater of Israel. He's never shown himself to be otherwise. No need to be nice and upgrade him to "fool" status.
I don't want to lose hope.
Ahhhh. This is what Fictive Reality is all about: the warm and fuzzies.
As evidence against the wretched, and plain stupid Solano, I cite Gaza. An opportunity to till and reclaim a bit of the barbaric desert and turn it into a civilised land. The Arabs have been given Palestine Part 1 already. So what do they do with it?
They use it as an over large rocket launcher and prime it with weapons to fire into Israel. For what? For Palestinian Liberty? Come again? Hasn't that been granted, and isn't it to be granted by degrees? No, it is for the love of hatred against the people they are indoctrinated against as soon as they are off the teat.
The refusal to see the blindingly obvious in this situation is something that indicates a crass stupidity, or a latent loathing of Jews. Within the EU, I would say that the two are equally as prevelant.
And I can't pass on this opportunity to say how I always find it sickening to see Solano described as the EU Foreign Policy Chief. Oh God save us! The EU is trying to posses a collective foreign policy - that thing that should only be the business of a nation state. This already affects the way the British can interact militarily with the Americans - which everyone realises produces a fantastic fighting alliance for the good of the world. Imagine a huge bloc interacting with the world according to French foreign policy ideals. Shudder!
"I think. Therefore, I am." -- Descartes
"I say so. Therefore, it is." -- Solana
Hamas says that it must destroy Israel, because the quaran mandates it; Israel's destruction is a divine command from their god, allah.
That is why the PLO which tends to be secular, and Hamas are at odds. The PLO is following a secular political course; Hamas, is following a religious one -- they say so in their unamended charter.
Could it be that Solana, at the height of his profound arrogence, has set himself above allah?
At the mere utterance of Solana's will, he can summon the forces of the cosmos and create that which does not exist?
Is this not blasphamey against allah, who is now limited by Senior Solana's proclamation?
It will be interesting to see what unfolds for Solana when the muftis and the islamic clerics come to realize what has happened.
Solana groveled quite nobly before the Saudi democrats and other Arab republican and civil libertarian potentates during the Muhammad cartoon crisis. In France, the Canard Enchaine' saw fit to mock him. See links:

For those who like multiple choice questions, here is one on Javier Solana as the reincarnation of Pierre Laval. See bottom of post linked to:

God, this Solana is *dangerously* stupid! Why aren't the rest of his countrymen reigning him in?
Solana needs to read the Hamas Charter. The destruction of Israel is a canonical doctrine of the Hamas organization that it can never abandon. As long as Hamas exists, its members are honor and duty bound to use violence against Israel. That is the real core of the Hamas ideology, not some fantasy to which he and most Western diplomats seem to cling.
