Iran's female racing champion barred from defending title

Danica Patrick take note: "Women are speaking highly of themselves and that causes men who sacrifice their lives in this sport disappointment." Can't have that. Sharia Alert from Robert Tait in The Guardian (thanks to Mackie):

She was the speed queen of the racetrack who became a feminist icon after triumphing over an all-male field to become Iran's national car rally champion. But now the high-octane driving career of Laleh Seddigh has juddered to a halt, with a ban from participating at a race by the country's motor racing authorities.

Seddigh, 29, was walking towards her 1600cc Peugeot 206 at Tehran's Azadi stadium when stewards blocked her way, citing "security problems".

The snub followed days of wrangling with Iran's racing federation over her right to take part in an event she won two years ago on her way to becoming national champion. In the lead-up to the race, she was told her participation was not guaranteed but was advised to register her name. Her registration was passed after technicians gave her car the all-clear....

"Most of the federation members were not happy to have a female champion and would have preferred a man," she said. "Since I won, they have even eliminated the winner's podium. They were afraid that I would win again and they would be obliged to show me on the podium."

Seddigh says a Muslim cleric has already issued a fatwa - a legally binding religious ruling - stating that there is no religious bar to women racing against men provided Islamic dress code is observed. She plans to use the fatwa if she fails to persuade federation officials to grant her permission to take part in future races.

The federation's vice-president, Hossein Shahryari, said Seddigh had been barred because of a government circular restricting women to female-only events. That decree has now been lifted, he said.

But he added: "Women are speaking highly of themselves and that causes men who sacrifice their lives in this sport disappointment. Women are not champions in this sport, they are only participants. If they observed Islamic regulations more they would not have such problems."

If I read that last statement correctly, that official is saying that women may enter, providing that they lose (throw the contest).

What a bunch of cowards. You just can't make this stuff up. When will we have a leadership in the west who can properly mock the Islamic world for their women-hating? It's such a weak point about which these idiots can be easily shamed, and shame is a very effective force against buffoons puffed up with fragile pride and self-esteem.

Seems to me that the wimpy little "men" can't stand to look bad in the eyes of their peers because a woman won, and therefore women can longer be allowed to participate if it appears they might win. The last line basically tell all women to get back into the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant, where the clerics say they belong.

islam = slavery

How does a woman drive a race car dressed in those crazy shrouds they have to wear in public in Iran? Leave to those mullahs to come up with yet another fatwa to cover such things. What's next? A fatwa on correct breathing techniques? With all these damn fatwas being necessary to do anything in Iran it's astounding there is such a thing as a female racing champ there at all. Hopefully she'll be able to keep on racing in that shroud-right across the border into the relative freedom of Iraq.

Someone reading this has the connections to help her. Get her on another team. That WRC stuff is great. She could "race out of there"

God willing, of course.

sounds to me like irans men cant take the shame of a gal being better than them this is just a example of how islam is mired back in the 6th century

If the imam says it's OK, that should be the end of it. The imam knows all. One question I'd like to ask the imam, if hamza al-masri's hook was on his left hand instead of his right, would he be allowed to wipe his bum with the right or would he have to use that hideous hook? Inquirin' minds gots to know.

That fire-retardant burkha, with the STP and Penzoil patches, might become a hit with the teenagers, too.

I would suggest Laleh change her name to Mustafa and that she hide a salami in the front of her pants ( halal meat of course). Keep the helmet on at all times and strap down the breasts, if she has anything larger than A cup.

Problem solved.

Brilliant. Comical. But the funniest thing of all is that the idiots would confer with each other in all seriousness. Hysterical.

Time for an organized sex strike, this time to end gender-based discrimination.

Mr. Arbroath,

Good idea! If Shahyari thinks men are disappointed now just wait until they go a day or too without any. But then, come to think of it, I don't think a strike like that would last very long. Isn't a good beating the most popular form of foreplay in Islamic countries?

Ah, Islam! Such a romantic lifestyle.

Unfortunately, Isabella sees the flaw in the Lysistrata approach: a sex strike is a no-go when not only is the woman ordered by Allah to provide sex on demand regardless of circumstances, but that command is backed up by the one-two of angel curses and the whip in her Koranically-correct husband's hand.

I didn't know the male ego was so sensitive, it seems it is.

The Gentleman with the hook as far as I know does not wipe his own anal orifice, but the Government pays somebody to do it. The Government could safe a lot of money if they automated the procedure I suggest that they install a robot arm with a sand blaster attached and use gravel instead of sand. Your turn will come American taxpayers when the Brits deliver him in a few years time. By the way his prize bitch and litter are having the house where they live, renovated at a cost of I don't know how many thousands of pound. She has done nothing but complain. She has also reputedly asked for some help with child minding, but all the shepherds refused because they said that ordinary collies weren't up to it and they would need doberman pinchers, to deliver the service she was asking for.

Now now, women have equal rights under Islam. Why, just look at this article! It discusses, in detail, whether or not women can ever be the head of government.

What's that? You want to know my favorite line?

"That woman is not barred from the mosque is clear from the Hadith in which Prophet is reported to have said: 'O women. When the men prostrate themselves, then lower your gaze, so you do not see the private parts of the men due to tightness of their loin cloths.'"

Since it's usually (always) the woman's dress/behavior for being raped, shouldn't it be the up to the men to not wear such tight loin cloths?

No SR,

Islamic men can do anything they want, whenever they want and Islamic women can't do anything about it. If the men run afoul of some law they just make up a new one to cover their you-know-whats, just like Mohammad did when he was getting horny again and said that Allah told him he could have more than four wives. Very convenient.

Let's face it, the fact that a woman was able to drive better than all those Muslim girlymen is the real issue as far as those backward Neanderthals is concerned. And I'd like to apologize to any Neanderthals I might offend by comparing them to Muslims.

Because Mo' so hated the world he gave us Islam.

"She has also reputedly asked for some help with child minding, but all the shepherds refused because they said that ordinary collies weren't up to it and they would need doberman pinchers, to deliver the service she was asking for."

Holger, that gave me my best laugh of the day! Thanks.

Ditto for me, Holger Dansker. (Needless to say, that is one job in Her Majesty's civil service that I will not be applying for, regardless of pay and benefits.)

But he added: "Women are speaking highly of themselves and that causes men who sacrifice their lives in this sport disappointment. Women are not champions in this sport, they are only participants. If they observed Islamic regulations more they would not have such problems."

Oh but islam teaches equality between men and women. BS. It hurts their egos that bad if they lose to a woman? Oh that is right, the koran states that a woman is equal to half a man. That men are stronger and that women are emotional. They are backwards and always will be.

They're racing in Iran? According to Mr Desai of Ask Imam this is very un-Islamic. Off with their heads!

I had an important question concerning a career. So my 2 questions are: Is becoming a Professional Race Car Driver Halal or Haraam in Islam? Is is associated to gambling? If so, why?

Answer 14134 2005-03-07

It is not permissible to become a professional racing car driver.

and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Of course Allah Ta'ala knows best, and Pelayo can't be bothered with putting "sic" everywhere these yokels screw up spelling or grammar.

I must add something concerning sports in Islam. One fatwa on boxing stated that it was OK as long as it was considered training for jihad.

Well, here' a fatwa from Pelayo:

Driving in rally type races is excellent training for jihad. Those skills can be used for driving getaway cars after a drive-by attack or setting of a roadside bomb. Racing in rallys or off-road events would be very useful training for avoiding pursuit by the police or US Army soldiers. Also the adoration from burka clad groupies is a side benefit.

Whom might have the problem shahryari? I'm trying to contain myself. I'll be unislamic, I'll be decent.
