Those nutty jihadists. Tune in next week, when Uncle Osama masterminds a plot to fly airplanes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon! "CBC looks for comedy at Prairie mosque," from the Globe and Mail, with thanks to Cindy:
The CBC has quietly ordered eight episodes of a promising -- but potentially politically controversial -- new sitcom, Little Mosque on the Prairie, about a fictional Muslim family living in rural Saskatchewan. But instead of hoisting pitchforks, rolling down hills and selling eggs at Oleson's General store like Michael Landon's Ingalls family, this transplanted clan will be trying to interact with the denizens of a little Prairie town in a post Sept. 11 world.Given global religious tensions -- not helped by Pope Benedict's controversial remarks on Islam and the firestorm provoked by cartoons of Prophet Mohammed published in the Danish press -- Little Mosque on the Prairie's comedy will have to be handled with extreme caution. Or God knows, CBC could have any number of watchdogs running around like Little House on the Prairie's shrieking shopkeeper Harriet Oleson.
CBC is also still smarting from the beating it took over the short-lived programming fiasco The One and is wary of any more potential missteps. Unlike other series starting this winter, the network has been rather tight-lipped about Little Mosque. However, CBC spokesman Jeff Keay confirmed the broadcaster has ordered eight episodes and will begin airing them in January. "The producers recognize the potential sensitivities and are taking that into account," Keay said. "We're comfortable that [the show] is being taken in the generous spirit intended. Little Mosque on the Prairie is a funny, warts-and-all look at life in a small community."
Little Mosque is the brainchild of Regina-based filmmaker Zarqa Nawaz, who is writing and producing the comedy. Nawaz -- whose company is called FUNdamentalist Films because she wants to put the "fun back into fundamentalism" -- pitched CBC on the show two years ago. She's working with WestWind Pictures, also of Regina.
Uh oh, I can just feel that "Canada Rage" building up already. As soon as one episode is aired look out. Hopefully, the CBC will have the guts to air it nonetheless.
There goes the cars and embassys in Canada!
Which crackpot will be the first to issue yet another deadly fatwa against Nawaz for committing blasphemy? No doubt that will be done when that rage comes about, especially since humor and Islam are incompatatble.
A muslim sitcom, what a great idea.
[Mohammed comes inside, looks tired and dirty.]
Wife: "Mohammed! If you sleep with the camel again, we're done!" (background laughter)
Mohammed: "I wasn't sleeping with it, I was just... hey, wait a minute, what gives you the right... I see someone is looking for a little honor-rape!" (background laughter)
[Mohammed rapes the wife]
Mohammed: "Alahu Akbar!" (background laughter)
THE END
To XY:
Damn funny! I certainly needed that laugh!
whose company is called FUNdamentalist Films because she wants to put the "fun back into fundamentalism"
Her codependent co-religionists have already put the "mental" in fundamentalism.
Unfortunately, I think JanuaryMan got it in one. There is no way the CBC will broadcast anything even remotely critical of Muslims. As awful as it sounds, I think it's really going to be a "lighter side of jihad" sort of thing. I can hardly wait to see the season premiere.
To Libbysmom,
I know you've said you live in Ontario and didn't even blink when you read this story. Neither did I. We both know better living here.
There is no way in HELL that the CBC (Communist Broadcasting Corporation) will EVER write, say or show anything offensive to Muslims.
The CBC is Al-Jazeera North.
Don't bother getting your hopes up guys. There will be nothing offensive in this show. Let's hope it is cancelled shortly after it airs.
Um, you can't "put back the fun" into something that was devoid of any "fun" in the first place.
Or am I missing something, and does sharia law have its lighter side?
'I think it's really going to be a "lighter side of jihad" sort of thing'.
Posted by Libbysmom
If it turns out to be like that then anti-Jihadists ought to make a point of being very offended and arising in indignant protest for the program to be cancelled.
As a Western Conservative Canadian, sadly I also have to agree with the above sentiment....this show will make Islam look beautiful and tolerant and all the White rural folk look like hateful rubes...
Folks this is the CBC...you in America, havn't anything to compare this to....perhaps the NPR....
The CBC is far far hard left.....they are traitors to the country of Canada.....
I would be shocked that this show was anything less then praiseworthy of the cult of Islam!!
I hope I am wrong....
Perhaps Irshad Manji could have a recurring cameo role, as the wacky lesbian neighbor.
Hello, first post here.
Does anyone doubt that Rosie was right about those Christians, namely that they are dangerous to America as the jihadists? The Mosque on the Prairie hasnt been produced yet but you can catch a documentary thats even better.
sept 27 msnbc ran a story about Jesus Camp, a documentary about a Pentacostal hard core summer camp for kids.It was made by 2 women from new york city who admitted they never spent time in the midwest before, let alone with religious people.
the msnbc intro and scrawling trailer informs the viewer that this is the same sort of thing as what goes on in pakistan for the muslim boys. Meanwhile the teacher is ominously heard, asking the children to become extremely serious about their faith.
In Jesus Camp you will be horrified to see these holy rollers dance and pray. The way they wave their arms around is especially threatening. The worst part is when a little girl, after attending the camp, walks up to a stranger and shares her faith. How uncomfomfortable the woman was. And the poor girl! This is the stuff from which suicide bombers are made of. And dont you just bet the Book of Joshua was quoted...

You are joking...right?
OMG!!! Are the Pentecostal's teaching beheadings? Are they practicing on goats? Are they practicing wearing the burkas? Are they practicing flying planes and how to shoot rifles? Are they practicing rape?
You are way out in left field Ozark.
I live in Ontario, too, and listen to CBC Radio.
Ever since 9/11, CBC has featured a lot of pro-Islam interviews and stories in which the religion is praised and sympathized with and absolutely no hard questions are ever asked. It's not journalism, it's public relations.
Equal time is not given to any other religion whatsoever.
I'm so sick of it that I turn off the radio whenever I hear any mention of Islam-is-the-religion-of-peace. I've yelled at the radio, "Stop hitting me in the head with it! Stop trying to brainwash me!" because that's what it feels like to me. (I was alone in my kitchen, if that makes me sound less kooky.)
The last time I listened to it, two or three Muslims phoned in to Rex Murphy's show and said, in all seriousness, that Muslims in Canada today are treated exactly the same as Jews were treated by the Nazis. (I'm not making this up.) I was angry when I heard that and it still makes me want to spit.
I was at the grocery store today and an older Muslim woman came in with someone who looked like he could have been her adult son (we know she isn't allowed out alone). The woman was covered from head to toe in black, except her face was showing. Not one person in the store looked twice at her. That's how hard Muslims have it here.
Rest assured, any Muslim television show on CBC would be a fluff piece that promoted the heck out of Islam. My guess is that it would show a lot of "anti-Islam" "racism", too.
I guess they figure there's an audience for it.
"Stop hitting me in the head with it! Stop trying to brainwash me!" because that's what it feels like to me. (I was alone in my kitchen, if that makes me sound less kooky.)

Ummm...actually. A little MORE kooky :-D
Just kidding. Believe me I completely understand your frustration. That post just struck me as funny.
It’s time to not only boycott CBC for such pro-Islamic viewpoints, but to protest those who sell ads on their station. I don’t get CBC where I’m located, but if I did, I’d find their website and send a few emails around to individuals, take the material I objected to and sent it around to like-minded individuals and get as many as I could to stop viewing their programming and to stop buying from their advertisers. Let the station know and let all of the advertisers know.
They can’t continue to promote Islamic culture if they can’t pay the bills. Money talks and BS walks.
this is for real? Come on now, you're pulling our legs--aren't you?
What next? "Leave it to Ahmed?"
where a sickeningly normal Moslem family--in a North American host country, tries to make a go of it as "normal citizens--and . . .
. . . get outta here!
Sounds as if she's a sympathizer. Ugh, humour is probably the most effective tool either side could use. Looks like they're using it.
I'm tired of only getting one perspective on the CBC. Freedom of press? If you own the news station, maybe.
Whoops.
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/saskatchewan/story/2006/03/16/muslim-comedy060316.html
Since when has fundamentalism ever had fun in it?
I'll bet the townspeople will have problems with "Islamophobia". Canada won't have to worry about a boycott, because they don't export anything that matters.
When will it be time to put the mopho back in "Islamophobia"?
Mr Ape Pig: Sometimes I realize, too late, that I've just yelled my frustrated "feedback" out the open kitchen window.
MaxInfidel: The CBC is funded by our tax dollars. It is not-for-profit and therefore doesn't have any advertising. It is very left-wing, as is any government agency. (I used to work for the school board. I detest group-think and group-speak. It's really hard to argue against it because anyone who disagrees with the party mindset is considered mentally ill.)
I bet they'll have episodes where fear-mongering white people scream "it's the goddamn a-rabs, they're going to kill us all!" and the Muslims will just sort of shrug it off and have dinner with their Jewish neighbors and talk about tolerance and respect.
Right you are, JanuaryMan. But in addition to portraying average Canadians and Christians as racists, the muslims shown will be peace-loving, candy-coated, harmless, and so very much smarter than the white residents of their town.
Can there be any doubt that the intent of such a CBC mandated show is to "educate" Canadians that muslims are nice, peaceful, misunderstood lambs who would never hurt a fly? And the show creates the opportunity for misrepresenting or bashing Christianity on an ongoing basis. Two birds, one stone kind of deal. Let the brainwashing begin.
Ah, the CBC. Always a fresh reason to be ashamed to be Canadian.
The best case scenario would be for the muslims to overreact before the first show airs and burn down the CBC. *sigh*
Y'all are right on, after years of "Beverly Hillbillies" and "Green Acres" I am going to pitch a jihad fit* if this is just another show that ridicules rural North America.
*jihad fit - A uncontrollable outburst consisting of obsene jestures and curse words directed at the one eyed monster. Primarily caused by watching Muslim Apologists lying and fielding soft-ball questions from fellow travelling talking heads.
Let's put the *slam* back in "islamophobia". :P
I wonder how they will take to interacting with pigs in the country. If they don't show that, them the show is nothing more than propaganda.
fund a mental isLAm
almost... missing 2 letters at the end...
This is a joke right?
Ok.. it isn't a joke. Not funny... I hope CBS in States doesn't get a similar idea.
I can't wait for the new tv season when I get to watch the burka bunch, abufeld, mosque (mobile, ordainer, stinky, queazy, unit of, effigies,)3's adulterous company, cheers; kill the queers, mr. bean;Is she preteen?,jihadersons, mohamid and son,the facts of torture, and my favorite, 3rd brain from the cranium.
Don't worry. I'm sure PBS will pick it up for broadcast in the U.S.
I'm also sick to death of TV shows mocking rural communities. And you know that's what's going to happen...the locals will be persuaded to trade in their seed-corn cap for a turban and that will be the joke--these dumb yokels don't know any better. Gah.
"The pilot will go to air next winter. Its working title, Little Mosque on the Prairie, has yet to be approved.
How about The Real McQuoiz, eh? The second ebisode would be about Lhuk McQuoi trying to invent halal bacon by using soy meal and elk meat, eh.
There will likely be reaction to this in the U.S if/when it airs- remember, CBC can be viewed in southeast Michigan.
The Canadian propoganda machine is working, from what I can tell. I know someone in Ottawa that is very pro Muslim, and thinks that the Islamic threat is completely nonexistant, and those who worry about it are uninformed and as well as a bit paranoid.
I will ultimately defer to Albertanator and other Canadians on this forum, however I'd be curious to see an episode or two before I make a final judgment (if I feel I really have time for TV).
Long ago, a Malaysian Muslim I knew who'd done graduate work in the Midwest commented on how much at home he felt among conservative, Christian Midwesterners--and gave the litany of honesty, family ties, piety, openness, etc. In those far-off days before the Iranian hostage crisis, these things were said with a great deal of respect and appreciation. It also seems that apostates from Islam whom I've run into are also drawn in by the same sort of thing initially, which leads them to be open to looking into the Scriptures, etc.
So, I'm psychologically ready to see either way this sort of thing might go.
Ozark, when it comes to Pentecostals, the only thing I have against them is their propensity to say "the LORD told me..." without any recognizable book, chapter, and verse. It's a Deuteronomy 18 thing, ya know...
And, dear Northern Neighbors, hang in there. You've got a lot more going for you than you know.
Don't you know when the immans get wind of this they're going to *demand* editorial control and well things will --well lets just say the FUN will go out of FUNdamentalist Films real fast.
For those of you who are outside Canada and are not familiar with CBC's programming, I can tell you it has great variety: They are concerned with ethnicity and gender issues. Yes, I am joking (I left out fervent anti-Americanism and hockey), but there is a strong element of truth to my joke.
I will just add my number to the other opinions above regarding the CBC: Given it's track record, it is highly unlikely that this program as presented will tackle any tough issues in Islam. CBC is seemingly incapable of dealing with Islam in an objective manner. At least with regard to Islam, it is interested in presenting a pristine Disney-like image of Islam, not facts. CBC's website is linked to da'wa sites (including some Saudi-controlled propaganda), and its on-site articles on Islam sidestep any of the problems. CBC claim that they are not responsible for content of off-site links, but those are the sites that they selected (nothing neutral or critical). One of their links, YoungMuslims, contains blatantly jihadist material of the revivalists such as al-Banna, Qutb, et al. [see their Library]. Those guys aren't joking, and neither are the millions who follow them today.
CBC has already featured Zarqa Nawaz before [we've seen her FUN in Fundamentalism routine before, though not 8 episodes], and there is nothing seriously critical of Islam there. Nawaz's husband had to convert to Islam so that he could marry her with the acceptance of her family. The penalty in canonical Islam for marriage or sexual relations between a non-Muslim man and Muslim woman [aside from the case of Muslim master having sex with his female slaves and captives, which is permitted] in mainstream Islam is death. If the husband later decides to leave Islam, the penalty is death. If the husband criticizes these Islamic rules, the penalty is death. None of that was mentioned, as one might expect, in the CBC program on Nawaz. All we saw was a "cute" comment from the husband saying he converted 'to get the girl'.
I doubt that CBC will allow any of these issues to be addressed because of (a) their own fundamentalist political correctness, and (b) likely death threats.

From the CIA world factbook:
Canada is the US' largest foreign supplier of energy, including oil, gas, uranium, and electric power.
Exports - commodities:
motor vehicles and parts, industrial machinery, aircraft, telecommunications equipment; chemicals, plastics, fertilizers; wood pulp, timber, crude petroleum, natural gas, electricity, aluminum.
By the way, the last time I checked, Bombardier was the third largest builder of aircraft in the world.
A gratuitous swipe at Canada that added precisely nothing to the discussion. Great.
The CBC however, does suck! All of us western Canadians will be portrayed as Islamophobic rubes in this stupid sitcom.
Yeah, just like XY said... a Muslim sitcom.
I can just see the episodes
"Pilot"
Muhammad, a factory worker, collapses on the factory floor during Ramadan from exhaustion while fasting. He comes home early to find his wife talking to a male satellite repairman on the phone, without his permission. (Mo doesn't like to miss his Al-Jazeera). Zany laughs ensue when his wife is "lightly" beaten after they spend the night in separate beds.
"The cutting edge"
In this episode, Muhammad's wife Najma must arrange for their youngest daughter to have her clitoris hacked off. Zany laughs ensue when Najma cannot find a rusty razor to do the job, as noone in the household shaves.* Inshallah, a baseball is thrown through the house window and the shards serve well enough!
"A flaming good time"
In tonight's episode the Baptist church on the corner is burned after Billy Graham says Muslims have to take a share of the blame for violence in the middle east. Zany laughs ensue when the family's cries of "Allahu Ackbar!" are interrupted by the local RCMP detachment who comes to arrest Kamil, the eldest son, for arson. Allhamdulillah, the local imam claims Islamophobia and those Jews from the RCMP are arrested for hate crimes instead!
etc, etc.

Do they really? Your version of the new program is hilarious! But we should all remember the pious words of the demon Khomeini, "There is no fun in islam", or something along those lines. I do not believe that old bastard ever cracked a smile in his life. A muslim sitcom is the most ridiculous idea ever; there really is nothing funny about islam except its asininity, and even that is too deadly to laugh about.
Freewoman, ape guy, Ozark is facetiously describing an actual documentary made up a religious children's camp in the Midwest. It is a real documentary. I assume Ozark was trying to humorously highlight the ridiculous fear in the U.S. of Christians. Many progressive Americans claim to fear devout Christians more than they do radical Muslims. And Jesus wept.
This is very disturbing. And fitting that it comes from the CBC, the only network more dhimmi than the BBC. Essentially, the CBC is the Canadian offshoot of the BBC in London.
Everyone in the production departments of the CBC is under 40, a university graduate, but with a degree in some liberal art discipline, or worse yet, the humanites. They live in a large metropolitican downtown area in a condo within walking distance of all their liberal friends. 40% do not own a vehicle. They subway to work. They don't own pets. If they do, it is a chihuahua. They are single. They have tried online dating. They've 'made many great friends', just not met the ONE. They detest Bush, they frequent indie films, they all have a gay friend. Their condos are IKEA writ small. They have fast metabolisms, and bad circulation. Many suffer from nervous disorders or anorexia. They eat Thai twice a week at a favorite corner restaurant just a stone's throw from the art gallery where a friend gets them in for 20% off.
Yes, these are the people that will bring a sitcom featuring muslims.
So it doesn't take much imagination to figure out what the content will be.
But I will tell you anyway. This is the first time that muslims will be featured on a sitcom, and as such, will be portrayed as being just another part of Americana, or in this case, Canadiana.
Essentially, what this crafty muslim is going to do is to show that muslims, while having their foibles and eccentricities, are really no different from you or I. This fictional muslim family will abhor terrorism, while still playing the race and discrimination cards.
This is part of the taquiyya strategy, to disarm westerners about muslims. 'See, no need to worry about the influx of immigrants from Pakistan. They are Canadian, just like you and me. They just dress differently.'
Phase 1 begins.
"Muslim women use sugar for depilation purposes, I know my shit.

Do they really? "
Yes they do, Sue. I read it in National Geographic many years ago, and other sources on the internet since.
""This alternative to waxing hair removal came from ancient Egypt and is popular in Arab countries. A mixture of sugar, lemon juice, and water is heated to forms a syrup. The syrup is formed into a ball, flattened onto the skin, then quickly striped away. The hair is removed at the root." [1]"
And it all works out because an Egyptian muslim girl is the most likely to get de-clitorised, as it is a local custom (condoned by local muslims). It's the most logical method in a desert area, as shaving would be impractical without water.
I remember the pious words of the demon Khomeini, "There is no fun in islam or something along those lines."
A small nit, but he said there is no humor in Islam.
I do not believe that old bastard ever cracked a smile in his life.
The Ayatollah's first piece of legislation was to lower the street-legal age to 9. He was rumored to have a strong interest, like Mohammed, in pre-adolescent boys, in addition to very young girls.
Khomeini smiled alright. On each of his final thrusts.
Their condos are IKEA writ small. They have fast metabolisms, and bad circulation. Many suffer from nervous disorders or anorexia. They eat Thai twice a week at a favorite corner restaurant just a stone's throw from the art gallery where a friend gets them in for 20% off.

I have to agree with Malinois and Alarmed Pig Farmer...
August22 has superb insights and writing skills. I always enjoy reading his posts.
Keep it up, August22.
Khomeini is on record as not only smiling, but loudly laughing, on one occasion. That was when an exasperated Oriana Fallaci tore off the hijab she had been told to wear in his presence and treated him to a furious diatribe about his tyranny. The old monster was at first bewildered, then burst into incontrollable laughter, to the huge surprise of his own son, who later told Fallaci that he had never seen his father in such a mood. The interview then went remarkably well - as well as it could.
More interestingly, Fallaci accounted Khomeini as one of the very few powerful men she had met who had real stature and did not look like they had lucked out in getting where they were. She was impressed by his character and intellect. But her assessment was not positive. She found him so frightening in the strength of his character and the ferocity of his views, as to precipitate the long-term revision of views that turned a sixties left-wing icon into the loudest and fiercest enemy of jihad in recent times. She felt that she had met the real pivotal figure of our times, in terms of evil and convincing menace.
The CBC has quietly ordered eight episodes of a promising -- but potentially politically controversial -- new sitcom, Little Mosque on the Prairie...
......................
"Little Mosque on the Prairie"? Stop, stop, you're killing me! No, really--stop! Don't kill me! Ack! Ack!
mr ape pig and freewoman: no i was not meaning what I posted seriously, i meant the opposite.
Former Liberal WF has me pegged. The idea that Christians are evil/dangerous is becoming more prevalent. If this was directed at any other group it would be called prejudice. Pentecostal worship style makes even Christians who arent so exuberant a little uncomfortable when they see it, and msnbc tried to link that feeling with the uncomfortable feeling people have about terrorists. A really cheap shot dont you think?
There is a video of the msnbc segment on msn.
I am a Christian by the way.
One way to tell i was using humor was that i picked up on something Robert Spencer was posting about the Book of Joshua and I used it in the same way.
And what's the Islamic punchline? Somebody getting 'stoned?'
She felt that she had met the real pivotal figure of our times, in terms of evil and convincing menace.

Very perceptive lady, Ms. Fallaci. Fifty years from now, people will be scratching their heads in amazement that she was treated like a criminal in her own country instead of a heroine. I only wish she had groomed a protege to continue her work and keep her memory alive. She was a unique and unforgettable woman who deserves to have a memorial built in her honor.
