The 2012 London Olympics have been plunged into controversy by the discovery that the Games will clash with Ramadan, the most holy month in the Islamic calendar.The clash will put Muslim athletes at a disadvantage as they will be expected to fast from sunrise to sunset for the entire duration of the Games.
In 2012, Ramadan will take place from July 21 to August 20, while the Olympics run from July 27 to August 12.
An anticipated 3,000 Muslim competitors are expected to be affected.
About a quarter of the 11,099 athletes who took part in the 2004 Athens Olympics came from countries with predominantly Muslim populations.
Because the Muslim calendar is based on a lunar cycle, the ninth month of Ramadan - which runs from the appearance of one new crescent moon to the next - gets earlier by around 11 days each year.

I see a few things wrong here, first how many Olympics have already occurred during ramadan? Were there any muslims competitors or observers? If so, then why now? If not, why not ask to adjust the dates before making demands and threats? Granted, it does give muslim athletes an excuse for not winning and losing to a well fed infidel but an excuse is only good if it has some degree of merit and an excuse thrown out years in advance is just sad.
The Olympics, dating from ancient Greece, are MUCH older than Mohammedanism, and therefore take precedence.

By taking these measures, we will help to address the grievances of the arab world, and bring peace to all of us.
Besides, as they will soon be Britain's overlords, we should do everything we can to satiate their rage and temper their wrath when they are finally given political power. More importantly than if Muslims will be offended or not is whether we will cave in and change the dates. The whole world is watching to see, right now, if we will give into their "demands" and accept our dhimmitude or whether we will tell them, we don't give a shit what you're upset about. If they can riot during Ramadan (it seems to be one of their favourite times for doing it) I'm sure they can watch the games as well. Also, people are excused fasting if it might injure their health and I would have thought taking part in an Olympic event while fasting would be very bad for you.
The reason they don't schedule the Olympics during Christmas is because it is just the very beginning of winter. The Olympics are always in the middle of winter for the Winter Olympics. Also, they are in the summer for the aptly named Summer Olympics. It is usually in the middle of the summer. When the Olympics are in the southern hemisphere, they take place during their summer.
It's not fair to change the Olympics just because one religious group wants you to. They do not deserve a greater voice than other groups.

A few lines up in the same article shows once again that the basis for the whining and seething is not out of deep personal religious conviction, but to force islam's dominance in the hierarchy.
I am reminded of an event one year ago, during the National League Championship Series, when Shawn Green, then a star player for the Los Angeles Dodgers, did not play during Yom Kippur, despite the importance of the game and his importance to the team. He observed his faith privately, showing the dignity of faith. His professionalism earned the respect of his team mates and fans alike. In short, Yom Kippur faling during the climax of the baseball season became a total non-issue.
If they change the olympics for this reason, I will have truly lost all hope that the UK can be saved from the effects of Islam.

I don't believe that Britain will be under Sharia law by 2012. There is something about a country that has been invaded, over and over again in ancient times by the Danes and the Vikings and, I think, the Visigoths and still lived to tell about it, that I think they can shake off these backassward whiners. The fact that many of the crusaders came from England bears remembering. It also spawned the likes of St. Bede and Sir Thomas More and Edward the Longshanks who got the better of William Wallace, (for a while, anyway.) I can't believe the blood that runs through English veins has gone cowardly.

Fundamentalist muslims wouldn't have a chance anyway. The women can't possibly compete in any sport in full cover, and the men are meant to dress 'modestly' and wear a turban. They also need to be prepared to drop everything and pray 5 times a day.
So: if they are prepared to compromise on those issues, they should be able to have some food for the sake of their sport. If they aren't compromising on any islamic rules, they can't be serious competitors.

I doubt it's in the power of Mr Blair or anyone in the UK govt to change the date of the Olympics. That comes out of the IOC, so too bad if it happens to conflict with Ramadan. This would not have been the first time ramadan has fallen during the olympics. It's probably happened during the winter olympics as well. It's happened all over the freagin calendar. For some reason, muslims seem to think their opinion is more important than anyone else in the world. Time to nip that in the bud like the europeans did to the voices of other religions. I think in some cases it's important to be culturally sensitive to Muslim sensibilities, and this looks like one of those situations. What does their holy Qur'an call for again? Geez, I only picked a few examples and still didn't get beyond two days. Ramadan in 2006 was Sept. 24 through Oct. 23. There were 189 attacks, leaving 1207 dead and 974 injured. So far. And remember, this is what they did during their MOST PEACEFUL, SPIRITUAL MONTH.
But watching sports on tv? No, that would be out of the question. That is what they consider worth protesting.

In Soccer teams are picked regionally to attend the World Cup. Each region has local qualifying games that must be won before they can go on.
It makes sense geographically for Israel to be considered part of the Middle East, but Muslim countries would not play against them. FIFA (the governing body) accepted this blackmail. Israel has been shuffled around Asia, Africa, South America and even *Oceania* over the years, before being assigned to the European group. Tiny Israel's team stands up creditably compared with teams representing such countries as Iran and Saudi Arabia. They would probably qualify every few World Cups.
Being part of the High-powered European group, however, they stand little chance against such great teams as Germany and Italy. In 2006 World Cup qualifying, Israel finished third in European zone Group Four behind France and Switzerland, but couldn't make the finals. 1970 was the only year they were able to play in the World Cup.
