Hudood laws are laws of what is forbidden (haram) and permitted (halal) in Islam, and the prescribed punishments: stoning for adultery, amputation for theft, etc. And here a hardline Muslim leader in Pakistan says that initiatives to reform these laws must be resisted -- because such initiatives are...un-Islamic. ISLAMABAD — Maulana Fazlur Rehman, secretary-general of the MMA and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, has said the government is determined to change the country's Islamic laws in the name of Women Protection Bill, which would never be permitted.Talking to newsmen in home town Dera Ismail Khan, Fazl said a particular lobby supporting the Western norms is campaigning for the women's bill. He said the country was achieved in the name of Islam and the Constitution clearly lays down that no un-Islamic laws would be enacted. About the controversial Hasba Bill whose many sections were struck down by the Supreme Court, Fazl said the law has been duly amended in the light of the court's objections. It is an Islamic document drafted in the best interests of the people. The federal government was creating hindrances in the passage and implementation of this bill for no reason. He said the NWFP government was redrafting the Hasba Bill, which would soon be tabled in the assembly.

Any attempt to drag Islam into the 21st century is bound to be considered un-Islamic. After all, in the Islamic mindset it's always the year 630, a time of glorious conquest in the name of Allah and EVERYTHING that existed back then must be preserved as it was forever. How dare anyone wake these people from this wonderful dream world and expect them to live in the here and now.
If these reforms can't be passed, perhaps President Mushie should just abolish all rape laws. This at least would prevent women from going to the authorities crying rape and ending up in the slammer as a result. Just trying to point out that there's more than one way to skin a muzzie.
Any attempts at modernizing Islam will fail. The self-policing nature of the religion and the combination of church and state prevent changes. A few death-threats to moderates aid in maintaining the status quo as well. More and more Muslims are accepting the radical extremists and supporting the global jihad. The inflexibility and viciousness of this movement becomes clearer with every report I read. Without a separation of church and state, a redrafted Hasba bill will never pass. Sorry, ladies.
