Empty rhetoric about the deplorable condition of women in South Asia is only adding insult to injury.But the recent rage against women, especially in Pakistan, forces one to sit up and think: Is this the same nation where once Benazir Bhutto dared to take on the male bastion?
Rapes, honour killings and a plethora of religious edicts against women are not new to Islamic society, and the status of women keeps getting worse.
In a fresh twist, women's faces on billboards across Pakistan, especially in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), are now being defaced.Reason? "These multinational companies want to promote obscenity, lewdness and vulgarity," religious leader, Shehzada Babar is quoted as saying in UK's First Post magazine.
The depiction of women sans hijab or headscarf is considered un-Islamic by Muslim radicals and the Taliban, whose influence is growing in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP).
"Although the trend has been noticed in many cities across Pakistan, recently it's been on a decline. However, it is still largely prevalent in the city of Peshawar. The local government there is following a Talibanisation drive in the province," the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) told HindustanTimes.com.
Aatekah Mir, a resident of Lahore, confirms that billboards showing women are being removed/defaced, but says that it is confined to NWFP.
"It is only in the NWFP that billboards with women are being removed. The provincial government there has this ludicrous bill that forbids music and dance mehfils in public places as well as homes," rues Mir.
"They (women) live their lives in utter fear and under restrictions. Even girls studying in the best of the colleges don't have freedom to carry out their dreams or even speak against harsh rules made by men. They are captive in their own houses. They can't move like American girls buying apartments of their own," says writer Abeer Khan....

What's the need of a woman in power if she behaves like a man?

Everyone likes to talk about "root" causes of problems. The "root" cause of islamic terrorism is the Qur'an, but islam can and has been subdued and controlled. The "root" cause of the proliferation of the Taliban and similar organizations is the islamic clergy. Imams, shieks, mullahs, and ayatollahs inculcate violent jihadist ideology day in and day out, from Afghanistan to Palestine, from Baltimore to Seattle, from London to Moscow, from Cairo to Teheran and beyond. They stand at their pulpits and praise and encourage the shahids, the mujahadeen, allah's brave warriors and demand jihad of every able-bodied muslim. They issue fatwas that sanction the murder of innocent Americans, Jews, Hindus, Christians, but when asked by some imbecile reporter if they advocate "violence" against non-muslims, the answer is always "no."
The governments of our "allies" like Saudi ARabia, Pakistan, Egypt do nothing to stop their clergy from preaching death to America, death to Israel, death to the Pope. Why do we give billions in aid to these countries, pay them to hate us?
Until these evil incendiaries are silenced once and for all, jihadists, terrorists, and murdering lunatics will continue to roll off the assembly lines by the millions. There will never be any shortage of human bombs in the muslim world until the teachers of hate and death are put out of business. We can send armies to fight them, but they already outnumber our soldiers and their ranks are swelling by the day.
It's like a leaky roof that springs a new hole every day. Eventually, all of the pots and buckets you own won't be enough to catch the water and you'll have to break down and fix the roof. There are ways to deal with this problem and it could be solved. But first someone has to acknowledge it and I guess that wouldn't be politically correct. Better to sacrifice our soldiers than to insult some pompous bureaucrat at the UN, a slimy Saudi prince, or to be called an islamophobe.
They obviously carved out that woman's face, mutilated her image and blanked out her existence because Islam teaches them RESPECT to women and they didn't want to see her ‘exploited’.

Rocky, the actual truth is that at the time of Mo's birth, Arabia was a highly civilized and very advanced culture. Christians, Jews, Sabeans, and Pagans all lived together in harmony. Then Islam arose and turned this beautiful society into the cesspool we have today.
To be fair to them, it's better than chucking acid in a live woman's face.
Maybe these are the moderate muslims we should be having "inter faith dialogue" with.
