Seven people were killed in Thailand's Muslim-majority south, police said Friday, despite the post-coup government's promise to boost the local economy in hopes of ending three years of unrest.Finance Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula said the government would set up a special economic zone in the south to lure investment to the region, which lags far behind the rest of the nation.
"We are considering giving privileges to the private sector such as tax deductions and discount fees for land purchase as investors and businessmen have fled the area," Pridiyathorn told reporters.
The economic scheme, announced Thursday by army-backed premier Surayud Chulanont after a special cabinet meeting on the insurgency, covers the three restive provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani on the border with Malaysia.
He is quite mistaken if he thinks money will solve this problem.

Yep.. the hard-working Thais they shoot and burn alive. They need to march those guys over to Indonesia at gunpoint.

Most Thai want to live peacefully with Thai of other religion. We assume the Muslim want this also. In most of the country there is no problem between religions, we have this problem only down there near the border where you have the extra dimension of Malay “culture,” if that is what you can call it. The problems won’t be solved with money or investment; this is just an excuse and opportunity to try to make some money off the problem by the ruling class in Bangkok. The separatists there know they are winning and that they will have their own little country where they can be dictators like their great grandfathers were way back when. There was a Thai senator from the Northeast who last year proposed migration of Thai from north to south to create more mix of culture and race to help people get along better. Actually it is the right of any Thai to live in any province but the local media and especially the international media condemned the senator as racist and wanting to commit genocide. This is ironic because it is clearly the Muslim who is committing genocide and ethnic cleansing in southern Thailand and the proposal was aimed to stop that. Evidently if non Muslim is being cleansed it is ok, but if Muslim is cleansed it is a crime against humanity. The Thai people have not believed the Muslim could just take the southern part of the country away from them but they have found a way to do it. Actually, no one in history has yet found a way to defeat the violent spread of Islam. There is only one solution to the southern problem I can see, to try to get Malaysia to agree to take a resettlement of Muslim from south to their Islamic states in the north. Pay the Muslims well to go, don’t force them out but be fair and pay them to leave. If they don’t want to leave, if they want to stay and be Thai, let them. But if they stay and keep killing monks, teachers, children and the elderly, those pulling the trigger and their supporters must be ruthless driven from the land without any fear of what the bbc’s of the world will say about us. A massive migration from north to south including refugee status for Buddhist, Hindu and Christian from Indonesia and Malaysia, to change the demographics from murderous Malay to peaceful cooperative society must also take place in the area. The terrorists will still sneak in from across Malaysia. Hopefully if the army can stamp out corruption in its ranks and in the local and state government it won’t be so easy for them to come in to kill then slip back across the border. Basically, the Muslim Malay is better at killing than the Thai, much better. Getting rid of them is the only solution. Otherwise, they will exterminate the local Thai and Chinese, take their lands, and form a separate state to wage war, sell drugs, become pirates on the seas, etc. inching their way further northward to the next patch of Thai soil. Will we have the will to do what needs to be done? Probably not. We will probably lose the south to these monsters.
