Discover Islam -- in the words of Muslims themselves

Kamala has a terrific and detailed post comparing the Islamic apologetic group Discover Islam's statements about Islam (found on posters meant to proselytize non-Muslims) to what Muslims themselves say about the same topic in other contexts.

Every bit of it is well worth reading and keeping for future reference. Here is a small sampling:

The poster begins:
Islam simply means to achieve peace—peace with God, peace with oneself, and peace with the creations of God—through wholly giving oneself to God and accepting His guidance.

(For ease of identification, direct quotations from the Discover Islam posters will be shown in bold print.)

According to a large number of Muslim sources, Islam does not mean "to achieve peace." Islam means "submission" or "surrender." According to the Muslim Student Association at USC, this issue is first in a list of "Ten Misconceptions of Islam":

Misconception 1: Islam is 'the religion of peace' because: the Arabic word Islam is derived from the Arabic word "Al-Sallam" which means peace.

The explanation:

The root word of Islam is "al-silm" which means "submission" or "surrender." It is understood to mean "submission to Allah." In spite of whatever noble intention has caused many a Muslim to claim that Islam is derived primarily from peace, this is not true... A secondary root of Islam may be "Al-Salaam" (peace), however the text of the Qur'an makes it clear that Allah has clearly intended the focus of this way of life to be submission to Him.

To drive home the point, consider three English translations of the Qur'an itself provided on the Web by the same USC Muslim Student Association. The authors of these translations, Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Marmaduke Mohammad Pickthall, and M. H. Shakir, were all Muslims. At the USC site, it's easy to search for all verses that contain the word "Islam." As the search results show, sometimes the authors chose not to translate the word Islam to English, but often they did, translating the word not to "peace" but to "submission" or "surrender." Sometimes "(to Allah)" is also appended. For example, in verse 3.85, Shakir writes, "And whoever desires a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers." In the same verse, Pickthall does not use the word Islam but instead writes "Surrender (to Allah)." Yusuf Ali writes "Islam (submission to Allah)." Other examples can be found in verses 43.69, 46.15, and 2.132.

So why is Discover Islam spreading what the MSA says is a "misconception" about Islam? Is there a split between the two groups? A schism? Odd, then, that there is no evidence of such a schism within the American Muslim community. Is there, then, something else going on here?

What Kamala did is exactly the kind of thing that needs always and everywhere to be done to halt or hinder campaigns of Da'wa. It is of its kind perfect.

What others also somehow manage to do, without grants or institutions behind them, in their counter-Da'wa pedagogic efforts of sober analysis, also heartens.

Some of these bookish guerrillas are doing what the governments of the Western world should be doing, but don't. So they have taken it upon themselves to do it. They have been forced to recognize that the ideological Defense of the West, for now, has been privatized. Some of them from time to time list their links here. Go to them, send things around.

It's the only way.

Thank you, Robert, for bringing this particular exercise in no-nonsense counter-Da'wa to everyone's attention. And thank you, Kamala, for possessing the stamina (and the necessary controlled fury) to do it.

These good folks wouldn't be trying to fool us, now, would they?

Only cults trick people into joining.

I have just sent the two photographs of the three
beheaded Indonesian christian girls to this site
http://www.discoverislam.com/
with the caption of "yes, discover Islam"
I will wait for a reply, something tells me i will
have a long wait.

Do they want peace, or did they mean they want us in pieces? :)

Wow doses of feel good about islam propaganda and I thought my head hurt before. Anyway, we have problems bigger than differing islamic propaganda. Most of the folks who stop and read the pamphlets, posters and other forms of muslim propaganda are curious about islam, the muslims know most will read from only one source and will make absolutely no additional effort to cross check what they read or hear. Muslim propagandists depend on the ability to repeat the same themes over and over until the target audience starts to except the propaganda as factual.

It is obvious to the JW/DW staff and us regulars our officials will not counter this type of propaganda. We can fight back ourselves, you have not done your duty to counter this propaganda fight until your neighbors, friends, co workers and relatives all turn and walk the other way when they see your approach. They are sick of hearing about muslims attempting to dominate the world and think you are nuts. Watch how quickly those same people will call you when they see propaganda posted, especially in our schools. The word is getting out and people are starting to listen (finally) and some of us are a royal pain but so is sharia. I don’t want a line in the sand I want a chasm.

Sorry for the double post. I blame it on society

l appreciate the explanations of the words and meaning behind the word "islam". this kind of knowledge is only acceptable to those willing to question islam. actions speak louder than words, and when someone has heard and seen enough of the violence of the religion of peace aka islam, some will further investigate. unfortunately most do not bother. l just keep emailing information to my liberal brother, one that kind of woke him up, was from an Indian poster giving a link to the mass slaughter or Indians during islam;s conquest. you see my brother and many other diehard liberals, tend to blame Israel for all things gone bad in the middle east, and when you show muslim agression before Israel was created and not from that area, it shows a religion spread with the upmost violent methods. so many Westerners have this "blame the West" for all things gone bad with muslims. Anyhow the fine work of Robert brings out the creme de la creme in debunking the myth of the religion of peace aka islam.

The car wreck that is islam today.

Hey momma, aint ya proud ?

"you have not done your duty to counter this propaganda fight until your neighbors, friends, co workers and relatives all turn and walk the other way when they see your approach" Ronin above

You have a point there, I guess us JW/DW regulars tend to be seen as loony alarmists if we don't watch out. However, you may also know the feeling of watching your co-workers etc. blissfully aware of the reality of the situation, and you just want to start educating them, but they probably wouldn't care. I sure know that feeling.

->blissfully UNaware, of course

You merely have to introduce the subject of Islam, then slowly, by degrees, ratchet up the level of detail and expressed dismay, and then alarm. Slowly, carefully, taking care to answer every objection. Many are merely waiting for others to bring up the subject first, and then the dam bursts, or can if subject to repeated battering.

This summer, my sister-in-law authoritatively told me that there is nothing in the Koran against Jews. I told her there sure was and to ask her brother (my husband) if she wanted the verses. Unlike me, my husband has a good memory.

anti-uffe they do come around. True, you lose a few but many of the now regulars were first challenged to learn more about islam and directed here. Now they are on our side and will invite others. This site and others like it are the reason the islam world wants the press, the net, and freedoms of speech limited. They always claim to need extra protection far and above all others, to survive they are right. The truth is their greatest enemy but only if we can get folks to listen.

Al Saheed Al Kuffar, you are right. Unless they find a way to silence us all, the truth will spread.

Many are merely waiting for others to bring up the subject first, and then the dam bursts, or can if subject to repeated battering.

Had the opportunity to spend time in a 3rd world country last week and speak with native Amer-Indians, working class folks, European businessmen, British soldiers, and some tourists. The topic often turned to Islamization, and I wasn’t the guy to bring it up. It felt good to share some of the core teachings with an interested audience once it was.

The conversation that stuck me the most was with an entry-level food-service worker. He mentioned to me that he had always dreamed of going to Bali, but has no desire to do so now. He explained how important tourism was to his economy and that what happened in Bali would never happen ‘here’. The Bali workers were devastated by the loss of tourism.

Islam is the religion of peace' is an example of word magic/word trickery used by Muslims to further their positions. This is not the only example of word magic comming out of them. They have a word trickery response to every one of the objections to Islam. There are exceptions...

Read WND interview with a suicide bomber in Palestine.

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/

He tells the truth. He does not want to blow himself up for political reasons, he wants to do it for Allah, and for the rewards of Allahs Paradise.
He does it because the Quran encourage's him to do so. Dont beleive me Mr Hooper, read it for yourself.
This guy is as good a muslim as it gets.
Watch Hooper use word magic to explain that one away...

Typical interchange with a Muslim or a Leftist:

Muslim/Leftist: "Islam means peace."

Rational Human Being: "No it doesn't, and here's the proof." [Proof produced]

Muslim/Leftist: "Well, Christianity is violent too."

Rational Human Being: "First of all, violence is not codified and enshrined as the divine literal truth applicable for all time in the religious texts of Christianity or Judaism, as they are in the religious texts of Islam [proof produced]. Second of all, the modern West is not 'Christian' or 'Jewish'; it is a secular system in which Christians and Jews along with all other religious and non-religious groupings co-exist as peacefully and productively as possible, given the natural problems arising out of general human imperfection -- unlike the system of Islam, which desires to concretize and force the rule of one religion's laws -- most of which contradict modern human rights -- over all other groups."

Muslim/Leftist: [Beginning to devolve into hateful incoherence] "What about the Crusades? What about the Inquisition? What about the witch-burnings? What about the genocide against Native Americans? What about slavery? What about Hiroshima and Nagasaki? What about pedophile priests and Mark Foley...!!!???" [sputter, fume, spittle, seethe]

Rational Human Being: [Uploads more data to keep up with this barrage of scattershot fireworks and hopes for the day when the Muslim/Leftist would be taken away by the men in white coats...]

One of the greatest tools that everyone of us will have to arm ourselves with is for us to read the koran ourselves, especially the ones that the terrorists quote for us,. Not the ones that are translated by CAIR and their apologists.

remote_control - Exactly. On the Michael Coren show the other night, when the discussion was Islam & Christianity, one Muslim expert stated that Hitler never renounced his Christianity. The three Christians ("Rational Human Beings") stated firmly, "Oh, yes, he did, several times, in fact."

The same Muslim expert quoted some violent verses in the Old Testament and Michael Coren didn't let him get away with it.

We really do have to know what we're talking about and remain rational. I'm still learning, that's for sure.

"Oh, but Islamic apologists will try their worn-out arguments like "...out of context", "... bad translations", "... have to know Arabic to know..".
But we know how to counter these, can't we?"

You sound uncertain but if you aren't sure, here's some help:

You are taking it out of context!

You must speak Arabic to understand the Koran!

You are cherry-picking Koranic verses!

The so called muslim "moderates" are a dangerous lot, for they perpetuate disinformation about islam either wilfully or innocently. This may not be problematic when the number of muslims is small and the non-muslims are happy to hear these very reassuring and comforting words, before ignoring them.

But when the crunch comes and muslims reach a critical mass capable of overpowering the others, these very "moderates" will either suffer from amnesia or feign helplessness in face of the hijackers of the religion of peace. Or they will find some justification as to why we had it coming.
So while Robert didn't say it ever, "the only good muslim is an ex-muslim".

Caroline...Thats a great site. I was amiss to miss it. I like the statement that Abandonment is better than reform. This is the very reason I shoot as many holes in Allah as I can. Acceptance of Allah as God is the root of Islam. As long as Allah lives we will have Islam and recuring trouble. Our job is the reverse of Abu Bakrs:

ukhari:V5B59N733 “While Umar was talking to the people, Abu Bakr said, ‘Sit down, Umar.' But he refused. So the people came to Abu and left him. Bakr said, ‘To proceed, if you used to worship Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but if anyone of you used to worship Allah, then Allah is alive and shall never die. Allah said, ‘Muhammad is no more than an Apostle, and indeed apostles have passed away before him.' (3:144) By Allah, it was as if the people never knew Allah had revealed this Verse before Abu recited it. Umar said, ‘When I heard Bakr, my legs could not support me and I fell down, declaring that the Prophet had died.'”

His job was to convince the people that while Mohammad was dead, Allah was alive, so keep puting that jakat in the box. Our job/mine is to convince the people that Allah is dead, or needs to be dead. That Allah is NOT God, never was and never will be. There is nothing there but Mohammads blue smoke and mirrors, that requires worshiping, or acting, in Allahs behalf.
Muslims can worship one God. They can pray five or fifty times a day, they can help the poor and needy, they can lead a moral and spiritual life...they dont need Allah and his book, The Quran, or Islam to do it.In fact the average muslim would be better off without it. Islam/Allah is a hinderance to spiritual advancement.
Abandonment of Islam is not abandonment of God. It is the abandonment of an imposter, an evil force that prevents muslims from reaping the benefits of
the real God force.
No Allah, no Quran, no Islam, no jihad...sounds like a winner, to everyone but Satan...

Al Saheed Al Kuffar - thankfully "soon" is a relative concept.:-)

But I would return to the apparent uncertainty of the tone in your original post (with no intention to single you out here) and say that I think the uncertainty in your tone was and is real. (We may think we have seen the usual counterarguments enough that we know how to respond but I don't think that's really the case in fact). And so I would ask - do the links to Archimedez's pieces that I provided give you a feeling of being on more solid ground? I think so. (And nothing prevents anyone from adding to his rebuttals and putting us on even more solid ground).

What he is doing is hard work. It's not quite as easy as posting one's opinions on a site. But to have at one's fingertips the most solid arguments refuting the apologists claims, is I think, quite valuable for all of us.

I can't help but notice that there are many posters here who appear to have at least some spare time on their hands. I wonder if in some of their spare time they could manage to google around a bit (like so many folks do already in order to post articles and links here) in order to merely research a topic in some depth and merely lay out, in an organized format, the strongest evidence countering the apologists claims. If there were merely 20 people working on it simultaneously (even at a rather leisurely pace), "soon" would be a much less relative concept.

Introduction to Handbook for Infidel Debators

Kamala,

Nice work. I've done something similar in refuting the myth that 'Islam' means 'Peace.'

Caroline has provided a thorough rebuttal to the apologist myth that Jihad is defensive only.
