The most primitive manner of running citied socities is by force in every sphere of human life, as far as officials can reach. The actual insights of the West over the past few centuries--the things which actually led the culture from that part of the world to be the one in which the computer you're using was developed--is that, provided the general populace has a concern for reason and morality, and a sense of responsibility and personal agency, when the government sticks to certain limits, and thus lets voluntary social institutions and voluntary individual action fill the spaces left behind by limiting the government (not eliminating, but limiting), you on the whole get a FAR FAR less corrupt society and FAR FAR more creative society. (Interestingly enough, the fact that the government is limited helps create the checks that ensure that the government that remains will exist to do things like punish rapists instead of do things like cover up for the powerful Foleys of the world.)

This is because when people have the freedom to think for themselves and choose for themselves, and have a sense of their worth and their capacity as human beings, and have no threat of being killed for refusing evil orders, they are generally less likely to do evil. Evil still happens, but it is kept limited.

I can’t think of a historical parallel of today’s mass population migrations of poor, lower IQ people to rich countries in order to live under the generous social safety net. If it doesn’t stop, some predictions can be made:

1. Social entitlement programs will be impossible or nearly impossible to scale back in a popular democracy that has gotten used to them.
2. The immigrant’s poorer populations will strain an already over-stretched social system and the hard-working immigrant populations will not contain enough high-income earners to help.
3. Budget shortfalls will be addressed with tax hikes. The taxes will be progressive and further punish entrepreneurs and manufacturers.
4. Entrepreneurs and manufacturers will leave and tax proceeds will actually go down.
5. The system will break and bad things will happen. Like what we have recently seen in Russia. The Muslim’s won’t take over, but democracy may be lost in the process.

This thought is posted from a 3rd world country. The government has lots of incentives in place to attract business. The social safety net is minimal and income tax rates are in the single digits, including everything. There is a strong European presence in the business community. And none of them seem to be eager to go back.

By at least 2030, human intelligence may be exceeded by Strong AI (artificial intelligence millions of times more powerful than the human mind). Case-in-point: Intel already has a functional terascale 80 core processor with transfer rates of over a terabit between processor cores. Intel core duos are on the market now, quad cores to be released Q1 of next year and octacore processors within a year. At this rate of computing power, it will continue to be exponential for many years to come and this kind of computing power will exponetially change the playing felid in favor of modern civilization by extending the lives of those who refuse the inevitability of personal death.

Most likely before mid 21st century, Strong AI assistance will be aiding humans in adding nearly one year to every year lived for people in modern societies who choose to live as long as they can. They aren't trying to cure lethal diseases for nothing and the side effect of doing so is longer and longer and longer life.

Life expectancy will most likely double in length before 2050. Considering how hard the coming baby boomer retirement wave is going to strike our financial system, insuring that they live long and healthy lives is the only alternative to being financial burdens on young tax payers.

This means radical life extension and radical cellular enhancement and most likely the end of involuntary death due to biological degradation. I'm not kidding - research this for yourselves. This means people will be around for much longer, living healthier empowered lives, contributing to the growth and economies of their respective homelands and this ultimately means the choice of biological immortality.

So how the hell does this have anything to do with our struggle against Islamic encroachments?

Populations tend to stabilize and/or drop in conjunction with their level of education and economic growth - statistically speaking - the entire modern world population is either stabilizing or is dropping and Muslims somehow feel that they can fill in some imaginary population gap. My guess is that Muslims will cease to be the triumphant, expansionist Muslims when faced down by hundreds of thousands of super intelligent, well informed Robert Spenceresque types who intend on being around for a very long time.

What happens then when many if not billions of exceptionally brilliant individuals do not die and do not yield their right to personal freedom? What happens when AI assisted individuals know as much about Islam (try EVERYTHING) as Muslim scholars do in debates of right and wrong, of moral and immoral.

What happens when Muslims are forced to face the reality of radical life extension? For one, they would be forever exposed to differing philosophies as their lives, world views and personal accountabilities change over the course of their extended lives...or they can continue their present course of birth/death and damn their newborn children to face down super intelligent and ageless "westerners". Undertaking advanced therapies to stop and/or reverse aging would be a clear rejection of death and an "afterlife". Enhancing ones intelligence could very well eliminate the ritualistic fear within Islamic culture.

From this "transhumanistic" point of view, the future of Islam and it's chances for spiritual survival look quite grim.

All we have to do is maintain our ways of life, vote in the people who best represent our civic wishes for life, liberty and happiness, vigilantly point out and criticize the false ideals of those who threaten our way of life and we will outrun Islams primitive intentions.

I think it stems from the following:

1. Nanny state that takes the sense of personal agency out of life.

The _Brave New World_ cradle-to-grave system takes most of the exciting things in life that make you righfully realize that you matter as a person, as opposed to as merely a cog, and it leaves the situation such that the most you can see getting out of life is cheap hedonistic thrills.

The sense that you matter, and that your family matters, and that you can really make a difference in making life better for your children and in supporting a free, creative, strong society; this sense really provides incentive for people to shoot for more in life than the occasional spike of endorphines--and I think for men especially.

There has got to be something of value competing with hedonism, and there can be. In America there has been and is, to a large extent. Religion and philosophy have a lot to do with encouraging pursuit of the larger goals, but the stability of the general population's committment to such religions and philosophies interrelates back and forth with the political realities that help determine the chances of meeting the non-hedonistic goals.

To the extent that we become a nanny state, we erode those incentives to focus on the larger goals and to hold tight to a religion or philosophy that celebrates them, and hedonism becomes more and more attractive relatively.

2. Natural difficulty in adapting to technological change.

Even aside from abortion, the instinctive incentives for reproduction can be short-circuited by the Pill, to such an extent as to decimate a population. I'm going to start there, because even if abortion were to become illegal, the ways in which people can choose to use the Pill can, alone, lead to the demographic problems we're seeing in Europe.

A society as proficient in chemistry as ours is going to be capable of making birth control pills; they're not so complex to invent. A society as free as ours is going to be mostly unwilling to make such pills illegal. So what really matters, I think, is incentives for the types of use of the Pill that can decimate populations.

I think there are two incentives for the destructive sorts of use of the Pill (I'm assuming that not all uses are destructive; it at least has some use for young couples getting their economic situation stabilised in their first few years of marriage).

One is simple hedonism, which works somewhat differently in women than in men. This goes back to 1 above, though in the case of women, most of them really want to fit in, so it is a bit more of a numbers game: women will adopt more responsible goals if the culture around (men and other women) them encourage it more, even apart from nanny-state issues directly.

Two is the fact that, with tech progress, there are a lot of very cool jobs out there competing with having children for women's attention. This isn't a bad thing. It is challenging, in a free country, because you can't just go forcing women out of the coolest jobs to keep up birthrate.

There's a factor in civilization's favor here, which is that, thanks to biology, women do tend to want children.

I think that, if men and the general culture (the messages in the media, educational institutions, community organizations, religious organizations) stay on course with the basics of American culture (and they probably will to the extent we have a market in ideas), most women will try to strike a balance, having about two or three kids, and taking some hits in their career (sacrificing promotions and overtime for family, and on average doing so more than men) to do this.

To the extent having kids is seen as an adventure in which you bring the traditions and love of your family to another generation to enjoy, and to the extent that women can continue to find husbands with goals larger than mere hedonism, America has a lot of hope for retaining a replacement birthrate despite the Pill.

3. Despair

To the extent people think they are living in a system doomed to inflicting severe suffering on its inhabitants in the future, they will not want to bring children into it. You don't want a person who would be, in a way, a combination of yourself and the person you love most, to go through a great deal of futile suffering in the future.

I think a lot of the utopian ideologies (especially those derived from Marxism, and this includes much of academic Feminism) around target the US as some sort of extreme evil because it is strong and stable despite not being their--or any--utopia. (Islam is a bit different in tending to see the US' strengh as coming from accidental implementation of aspects of Islamic law.)

The utopianism combined with inability to see that, in the US's case, much of the US' strength exists because it has a lot of good in it, creates an irrational, paranoid fear of great evil just around the bend (thus the constant and totally out of proportion comparison of things like Guantanamo to Nazi death camps).

To the extent people get caught up in this strain of utopianism and the way in which it understands the US (and there is great variation of extents), they also get caught up in a bunch of psychological incentives to avoid having children.

The absurdity of our politicians and policy makers never ceases to amaze me. So what if there is a temporary dip in a country’s population; this is a natural pattern: things go in a cycle of peaking and ebbing. This is not a problem, but what is a problem is when you try to go against the natural order of things like our politicians are doing. They are mass importing people who are culturally, morally and ideologically opposite to us, rebels, to compensate for the population ebbs. In this way, not only are they compromising the native population’s chances to recover, but also are jeopardising our way of life and values. Truly, sometimes people know too much for their own good.

Population drops and increases have occurred throughout history. This is not something that should cause alarm, were it not for the fact that mass immigration and Muslim immigration in particular, may outstrip the local population and takeover the nation.

The other fallacy is that we need immigrants to take up the shortfall. This just is not true, as advanced societies think up novel ways to compensate for the drop in human numbers. This can take the form of advanced technologies or a re-organisation of the structure of the workplace. Longevity in Western countries now means that people can work till 75 - and many want to do so.

Bringing in immigrants, particularly Muslim immigrants, places a far greater burden on the state and society, as we can see even now, which in no way compensates for their economic advantage i.e., if they did not end up as a burden on the state.

My view, long held, is that we need to have a separation from the islamic world. As a start one needs to take them at their own words and agree wholeheartedly that there is indeed a dar ul islam and a dar ul harb, and for the good of humanity, infidels and muslims alike, it is better to live apart.

It is a sad fact that muslim presence anywhere leads to discomfort of already established communities. Soon the established community will leave or forced out by Jihad of mob violence, and yet another region becomes dar ul islam.

Muslim nations, left to their own devices, unable to export their excess population, an ever deteriorating infrastructure, increasing poverty and diminishing military power, will have no alternative but to reform islam. And even if they do not, they will not be a menace to the safety and security of the rest of the world, for the simple reason that they will not have access to harvest infidel lives.

Harsh as this is, it is the most humane way to progress. What frightens me is that we are moving towards a new world war that is quite unlike previous world wars. This world war will be a civil war ie a global civil war - the very worst type imaginable. Else we are looking forward to a Three Conjecture scenario leading to deaths on an unprecedented scale.

Separation, which can be done in a humane manner, leaves hope for the future for everybody. Politically impossible at the moment? - Yes. Yet precedents are there in recent history, where exchanges of populations were considered the only way to secure a reasonably peaceful outcome.

That is under the assumption that the birth and death rates stay the same as they are over an extended period of time. Then there is the assumption that civilisation can only exist when a certain population level is reached. I take your point atheling, but there are other factors at play now that were not in the past.

We would not be having this debate were it not for Muslim immigration and its high birth rate posing an existential threat to Europe.

Cornelius, *couples*, not women alone, make most reproductive decisions. Obviously, having no more than 2 children makes sense for most couples, for their stress levels, the women's health, the children's education level and parental attention and for wider environmental reasons.

Most people realise that the world is overpopulated, that we're running out of fossil fuels, and that climate change creates risks for future populations that some of us don't want to expose descendants to.

I know that many educated Germans my age were very aware of overpopulation issues during the last 20 years - the 'reproductive years' that many did not reproduce in. Their problem is that they still have a government that keeps importing more people.

Declining populations should be handled with a different approach than 'OMG, our national productivity is declining, we must import lots of immigrants'. It is an opportunity for some areas to be given back to nature and the remaining population to co-operate to look after itself within smaller areas. Retiring at 65, when people can remain healthy and productive until far greater ages will become a thing of the past. Staying productive in part-time work is increasingly popular with older people.

My partner and I have decided not to reproduce. New Zealand still has a rising population, but I don't think it should have. I like NZ just as it is: plenty of space for growing food and plenty of wild spaces for our native flora and fauna.

I fully support contraception and, yes, abortion (ideally to be replaced, when scientifically possible, with embryo transplant), based on people's decisions regarding their wellbeing and what they perceive as the wellbeing of the world.

Obviously 2 children per woman is near stable, and many western countries have that number. My point was that, even if the population decreases, this is not necessarily a bad thing.

If the whole world were truly democratic, i.e. there were no borders and you and I had one vote in 6 billion for every major decision, that woudn't suit us, would it? All decisions would be dominated by the most overpopulated countries, and they would soon vote our resources away from us and flood our countries.

So when we say we want democracy, we really mean sharing it within our respective countries with people who have at least the same commitment to democracy.

Letting in vast numbers of people who do not have that commitment, due to their belief system, will mean that they use democracy to destroy democracy, obviously.

Don't blame people who don't reproduce for this situation. The fault lies with politicians and economists who believe that constant population growth is a good thing.

Most western populations would probably stabilise once people worried about overpopulation were satisfied that the next generations will have a safe environment and adequate resources. Preferably without too many people who want to live under a theocracy.

*So don't let them in*. Find ways for a smaller population to live comfortably in its country. And watch people become more confident about the future and start breeding.

If one accepts Europe's anemic fertility rate as a fact of life, the only vehicle to prevent fiscal collapse is the importation of workers. The crime of Europe's elite was not in letting immigrants come per se, but rather WHO they let come.

Deception and falsehood are intrinsic to this evil creed of hate, violence and plunder. No one is saying that the muslims who are using their brains to look critically at all that's wrong with islamic thinking and societies ought not to be supported. More power to them.

The real problem is the evil ideology of islam. Muslims around the world can be, and are, good human beings, but usually when they disobey their creed. And the difficulty is that they cannot do the right thing, the sensible thing, the logical thing, of loving and caring for all their fellow human beings regardless of their belief, as long as these beliefs do not advocate violence or suppression of others. A. I have in general found Indian muslims to be smarter of the lot, so here's hoping they will get the fundamentalists under control. A. Tells you a lot about the creed of violence that threatens death to all who challenge its tenets. Tells you what we all are up against, doesn't it? How does it make us "some kind of bigots" and "alarmists", if we, being non-muslims are even more alarmed by the threats?

Islam teaches that true happiness can only being obtained by living a life full of God-consciousness and being satisfied with what God has given us. Additionally, true "freedom" is freedom from being controlled by our base human desires and being ruled by man-made ideologies.

Most sufis I've met have told me a history of confrontation with salafis/wahabbis and such, for quite a while now, and at much greater risk to their personal welfare than you seem to care to acknowledge. they don;t consider the salafis any more "true" and the feeling is mutual. I think they may have a better argument that some within the culture actually listen to, much more so than a bunch of Angry white Americans can possibly fathom.

For the record, I think gang violence and drugs are a far worse problem in the US than the vigilantism that many here love to promote. I don't see many devout Muslims advocating gang activity, drug use, or committing the kinds of crimes that occur every day here in our streets.

No, I don't subscribe to their beleifs any more than I do to christian or right wing pro-israeli religious zealots. Yes, let's start with my neighbors growing up. An expat Iranian family who oved here back in the good ol' days before Khomeini et al. Ah apprently you think tat if they don;t observe the "letter of teh law" they must be complete apostates? Well, the wife didn't cover, and no, they weren't as observant as some, but you know, when it came to Ramadan, they were Muslim. Seems pretty similar to a heck of a lot of people I know from my travels. Hardly uncommon. Much like my neighbors, they detest and ridicule the religious absolutists in their mist. They loved the columns of the late Farag Fuda. Much as mnay of my Turkish friends admired the late Uğur Mumcu. Both assisnated by fundamentalists. Both publicly mourned, especially by young people. I don;t see why we need to discount or overlook taht such people exist, and they are taking more of a stand than you likes to promote. And no, they aren't members of CAIR either!!!

I think that there are voices from within the culture that do a far better and more successful job of addressing these issues than a bunch of whiny angry Americans arguing that there's a "fifith column" of muslims in this country can possibly begin to fathom. I rightly question their motives for arguing that all muslims should be treated with suspicion, muc less deported, forcibly converted, and killed. My neighbors over the years never engaged in these activities and finally stayed here as refugees from the evils of totalitarianism. Why imply that they must be guilty until proven innocent? Folks like you sre seem just about as medieval as the Salafis!

2. There is not a single muslim country in the world that is living in peace with its neighbours or has peace within its borders. Throughout the world, wherever there are muslims, there's trouble.
