RAMALLAH, West Bank - A new report paints an alarming picture of the abuse of women in the Palestinian territories, with police, courts and government agencies failing to treat violence such as rape and beatings as a crime.
The New York-based Human Rights Watch cited practices such as rape victims being forced to marry assailants and light sentences for men who kill female relatives suspected of adultery. It said families, tribal leaders and authorities, backed by tradition and discriminatory laws, often sacrifice victims’ interests for family honor.’
Tradition, indeed. But one will see the most meaningful progress against such conduct only after confronting how deep and sacrosanct that "tradition" is in Islamic societies.
The problem is only getting worse with growing poverty and lawlessness in the West Bank and Gaza, the report said.
According to a survey by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics of more than 4,000 households in December 2005 and January 2006, 23 percent of the women said they had experienced domestic violence, but just over 1 percent filed a complaint. Two-thirds said they were subjected to psychological abuse at home.
The gap between incidents and complaints filed is undoubtedly affected by Qur'an 4:34, which sanctions beating one's wife.

The report, based on dozens of interviews with victims, social workers, lawyers and police chiefs in the West Bank and Gaza, found that abusers are granted virtual immunity.
Rapists who marry their victims are not prosecuted, and such deals are often arranged by the families, tribal leaders and local police chiefs.
Even those assigned to protect the victims often push for such an outcome. The director of the West Bank’s only shelter for teenage girls is quoted as saying she arranged five such marriages in her six-year tenure.
The law is lenient with men who kill female relatives because of adultery. Yet it bars rape and incest victims from having abortions. Rape within marriage is not considered a crime, the report said.
Arguments for a change in the law would likely be countered with Bukhari 4:54:560, where Muhammad himself states: ""If a husband calls his wife to his bed (i.e. to have sexual relation) and she refuses and causes him to sleep in anger, the angels will curse her till morning""
Police and hospital doctors are not trained to handle abuse cases and often further humiliate victims, the report said. In one hospital in the West Bank city of Nablus, a doctor announced to a crowded waiting room that his unmarried 16-year-old patient was pregnant. The girl’s mother later cited that incident as the main reason for her decision to kill her daughter, according to a case documented in the report.
A premium is placed on female virginity, with rapists facing a lesser punishment if the victim is not a virgin. Virginity tests are imposed on sexual abuse victims against their will.
The women’s fate is increasingly determined by tribal leaders or Palestinian Authority-appointed governors, rather than overloaded courts. The informal justice system is often arbitrary and biased against the victims, the group found.
Victims are often afraid to come forward because of social stigma, the perceived futility of complaining and fear of inviting retribution by relatives, the report said.
However, Manal Kleibo, a lawyer at the Women’s Center for Legal Aid and Counseling in the West Bank town of Ramallah, told The Associated Press that she has detected a change in recent years, and that the authorities are increasingly willing to work with her group.
For example, she said, growing numbers of police officers are attending workshops on how to handle sexual abuse cases. Some families no longer force their daughters to marry rapists, she said, citing the case of a 14-year-old girl who instead was taken to a secret shelter in the West Bank with her family’s support.
Human Rights Watch made a series of recommendations.
It said Abbas should launch a public awareness campaign and make it clear he does not tolerate violence against women. He should also demand that those currently settling abuse cases informally, including tribal leaders and Palestinian Authority-appointed district governors, refer all cases to the proper authorities.
Police should establish special units to deal with victims of abuse, and the legislature should repeal the most discriminatory provisions, the report said.
Hard to believe the AP ran this story. Frankly, I'm shocked. That said, the pro-Palestinian crowd will find a way to blame Israel for all this.

I try to inform people about these sort of things all the time. Rapes, honor killings etc. They don't want to believe that any of these things are really true. Tell them the truth about Islam and they will come back with a similarity from the "Evil Christians and Jews". That way is already to be found in the article. No mention of Islam, of its tenets, or its attitudes, or its atmospherics, is given to explain the treatment of women in societies that have been suffused or re-suffused with Islam. Instead, early on, readers are given an alternative explanation, one which effectively blames Israel (for its strange refusal not to supply the "Palestinians" with jobs and every good thing) and Infidel countries (for withholding, but only temporarily, the Jizyah of massive aid on which those "Palestinians" rely and which, they assume, are theirs by right) for the situtation:

Don't worry. Obliquely, but clearly, Israel is being blamed.

Somebody on this forum recently said that muslims were human. Human in name only. Human only in a biological sense that they have 46 pairs of chromozones. But so did Ed Gein. And no one can argue that there was a shred of humanity left in him.
From the word human, we get the word humane. Humane means to act in the interest of fellow humans, namely humanity. But muslims do not. Their religion, their culture requires that they brutalize their own flesh and blood, completely at odds with every human, even animal, instinct.
Islam, therefore, is anti-human. It is inhumane. On that ground alone it must be destroyed, even if it had no imperialistic elements.
Are muslims human? Only at birth. But as they are indoctrinated, they become less human. For they lose their humanity to become a good muslim. After sufficient indoctrination, they are sub-human for all intents and purposes. But still with an opposable thumb, and the ability to walk upright, they are dangerous.

It's ironic that, the only time a muslim male considers women as human is, if they are threatened (perceive threat) from outside islam. Then they beat their chests and act like they care. Otherwise, they don't care that they abuse or deny their wife, wives, daughters, sisters or mothers. Abuse of course is not just beatings or calling her a dog. They might as well strangle the females at birth, because they suffocate her as she grows up. No independent thought processes, no going out in public, growing up knowing she is for sex and breeding purposes only. How else could she handle sending four year olds to earn a living or for her girl children to be cut? How else could she sit by and let her husband/brother/father/grandfather/son have sex with her children. Maybe her duty to her children end at that age.
I guess years of learning hate, hardens one's heart to one's own children. Maybe that's how they express joy at their children being suicide/murderers.

Papabear, I've thought the same thing. But, I'm afraid at the age of 18, women are doctrinated on their "duty" to islam , probably already have a litter of children and probably most are illiterate. Get them before marriageable age (9) and they can be unbrainwashed and can learn. Of course, they would need to know they are secure from the muslim males that would want to kill them for leaving islam.
I really believe if these girls/women were educated, and not on the koran, they would CHOOSE a better life.

And that would also require him not only to read, but to ponder what he had rad, to thoroughly assimilate it, to understand it and to relate it to observable practices in Muslim countries or in Muslim socities within non-Muslim countries.
And that would be asking too much.

This is a true story, about 20 years ago in Hamtramck, Mi, the home of the mosque call to prayer, an Albanian muslim shot to death two nurses and a doctor in a health clinic. The crime, the clinic called his home and told his wife that he had VD.
The irony of this is that, about five years prior, I purchased an accounting practice, included was a Coney Island business owned by this same muslim.
After two months I dropped the account, I said to my partner, we will not have crazy people as clients.

'Rich heritage of leadership' (but not enough to leave the home without a male family member, or to be allowed to drive a car in SA).
But keep trotting out the vague and heart-warming terminology. The devil is in the details, so just ignore them.
That Erlanger piece quoted by Hughes expresses that curious PC Leftist view of Muslims (which also extends to all Third World cultures), viewing them more as animals in a wildlife preserve than as humans ethically responsible for their actions. When those animals start doing bad things -- eating their young, or defecating in the wrong places, or attacking visitors or staff, the animal lover doesn't think to blame the animals -- since it is part of their nature to act out in such ways, and more so when their environment is not humanely conducive to their daily lives: the animal lover will, naturally, blame those responsible for the upkeep of the animals. And in the minds of the PC Leftists and their unconscious crypto-neo-Colonialism, the West is the responsible custodian of the Noble Savage -- responsible for all wrongs that happen --, and Israel specifically of the Noble Palestinian Savage.
The ideal for which the PC Leftist strives for the Palestinian Animals is for those big bad zoo-keepers the Israelis to provide a Wildlife Preserve complete with all upkeep and provisions, to let the those animals roam as free and safe and well-fed as possible; and if those animals continually break loose of their zones to devour Israelis, it is always the fault of the Israelis for their inept management, at best, or their cruelty to animals, at worst.

It's not just their own women that Muslims mistreat. Several Christian women from Bethlehem and Nazareth have been kidnapped and raped. There are also some Jewish girls currently being held as "wives" to Muslim men on the West Bank.
