Jack Straw says he doesn't regret remarks on women's veils

Update on the Straw Veil Flap from the Associated Press:

LONDON: Former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said Thursday that he had no regrets about the article he wrote on Muslim women's veils that triggered an emotionally charged debate around Britain and as far away as the Middle East....

"I would write the same column again," Straw, who now serves as leader of the House of Commons, said at an interfaith forum in London.

He said the piece he published in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph newspaper had been thoughtful and respectful, and that he had never challenged women's right to wear a veil.

He emphasized that he only requested — and never demanded — that women remove the veils in his office and said he did not support banning the coverings.

He said those living in Britain should have a stronger sense of shared identity based on the country's democratic values.

Yes.

His stance should be tougher since he represents the people of Britain and was elected to do so. When in Rome do as the Romans do--applies in London. Ban the Burkha and other such ridiculous garb from Europe and America! IF the A-rabs and other orients want to wear it, let them go back home and stay there. That they want to force it on us is unacceptable.

Doesn't Mr. Straw realize that "requesting" anything of the muslims means he is a bigot! I can just see the weekend articles coming now--"IMAMS ANGRY OVER STRAW'S COMMENTS" "JIHAD IS DECLARED--LONDON TO FACE MORE TERROR"

A step in the right direction. Commendable.

He doesn't regret his remarks and meither do I. Good for him. He should give the Islamaniacs and their lapdogs the back of his hand more often.

Wow all he said was for them to consider removing the veils: he did not threaten them, cut their heads off, crash airplanes into their buildings, rape their women, shot and kill their people in the back, jump around and generally foam at the mouth--

oh wait thats

WHAT MUSLIMS DO....

stronger sense of shared identity based on the country's democratic values.

Thank you AP for your "translation" of what was said...............changing its meaning completely !

In a speech at University College London, he argued that during the last 50 years, people's "sense of class" had dissolved.

This had led to an "erosion of collective sense of community", he said.

Mr Straw claimed people had come to view themselves "more in terms of their cultural, ethnic, national, gender or religious affiliations".

"Britishness" could provide "common values", such as liberty, tolerance and the rule of law, he added.

This was "not about a nation - there are Scottish, English and Welsh nations".

But people should speak a "common language", as this was essential to communication between religions and ethnic groups, Mr Straw said.

"Britishness is thus an identity available to Anglicans, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus and those of other religions and none, and a central element of that identity is the principle that everyone has the freedom to practise their faith not as a matter of tolerance but of right."

The issue is simply that "British" is now an alien concept to most people. We have lived for decades with people like Straw attacking anything "British" that people now disown it and see themselves as English or Scots or Welsh - and have no wish to fit into what politicians define............

It is not a minority ethnic group that needs to "integrate" - there is nothing left to integrate into as Labour and The Left, Thatcher, and the EU, have fractured society that noone is sure what identity is left.

The nation is coming apart and being balkanised

finally somebody with a backbone.

BNP also antisemitic, as Melanie Phillips points out:

http://www.melaniephillips.com/diary/?p=1376

Instead of protecting the rights of minorities, BNP intend to deprive liberties along the lines of race. Enforcing a law to deprive people of their liberties implies authoritarianism. BNP, openly fascist. Tip of the iceberg. Not a solution.

Labour and The Left, Thatcher, and the EU. Can anyone spot the odd man out?

Thatcher didn't fracture society, or can we not get over the "no such thing as society" out-of-context quote? Or is it the supposed destruction of mining communities? Perhaps the greedy 80's? (Otherwise known as the medicine to the previous 20 years of decline). Perhaps it was because of the tricks she missed by signing those European deals? Well, all that is regrettable. But the fact of the matter is that Britain is consistently the most degenerate and retrobate country in Europe, so it's a problem very much of our own.

The five big issues that have ruined British society are:

1. No deference, no respect.
A recent study has said that we do not respect anything or anyone. Blair said that he wanted an end to deference, his wife refuses to curtsey. It's policy from the top.

2. The importing of many foreign cultures to usurp the "indigionous". (Notice I do not have a problem with immigrants, and I would much rather see a Pakistani come here, with a claim of being in the Old British Family, than any of the pretenders that come here because of tenuous, and conived EU links). This is in full swing since Labour got in. Labour hate the old system, and are bent on destroying. Well, they have.

3. The ridding of the old institutions. A Labour project. House of Lords. The Church, by mockery amongst other means.

4. The culture of rights with no responsibilities.
Kids can have sex and commit murder the next day, as long as they don't spoil their selfish lives with an unwanted child. And still noone tells them that the best way to avoid unwanted pregnancy is not to have sex.

5. Political Correctness. A tool of the evil Left to stop people criticising their destruction.

I think that the idea for the malaise was seeded in the 60's, and all it really needed was a Labour government with a long enough innings for the ideas to be brought to their devastating realisation.

It's coming home to roost, and it's getting too late to fix it.

FREE LEE
What is it about curtsy that has you so worked up against the Blairs? Just curious to know why this silly, ridiculous little gesture, impossible to perform in a graceful, dignified manner, shouldn't go? What does it have, intrinsically, than a simple bow, doesn't have?

Kudos to a statesman with a spine.

Thatcher didn't fracture society, or can we not get over the "no such thing as society"

The silly quotation you use would be better if you completed it.

No Fred Lee I refer to the enormous centralisation of power, the destruction of local governnent, the centralisation of business property taxes, cash limiting council budgets, huge defence cuts, destruction of all other centres of power, the attempt to overturn the 1986 GLC Election and appoint her own candidates in place of those elected.

I refer to the Single European Act which began huge transfer of political power to the EU. I refer to the centralisation of schools under The National Curriculum and OFSTED which has given Labour complete control over ALL schools.

I refer to the privatisation of electricity companies which are now owned by German and Chinese corporations; the reduction in court houses so now the few courts that survive are in a National Courts Service controlled from London and are so inefficient that it takes 18 months to come to trial

The amalgamation of police forces so the only major city with its own police force is London

The sale of Royal Ordnance so now the British Army imports charges for artillery from South Africa and explosives from France and no longer manufactures ammunition

The highly centralised State that Britain is today with each local council controlled by London is due to Margaret Thatcher, who spent so much time having MI5 investigate unions that she ignored the Arabs flooding into London from France, or the Somalis coming from the Netherlands when the Dutch cracked down on benefit cheats

The self-contradiction Jack Straw is living the fantasy all Islam Fictive Realists suffer. He thinks that through a series of incremental civic commandments the Moslems can be brought to heel and maybe even civilized.

--- God contradicting Jack in Koran 3:19

It is not fitting for a Muslim man or woman to have any choice in their affairs when a matter has been decided for them by Allah and His Messenger. They have no option. If any one disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a wrong Path.
--- God denouncing civil gov't in Koran 33:36

And awaits those traipsing down the Wrong Path? Hint: it ain't a pot full of gold. So on this Infidel trip, then, a lack of focus and direction is a good thing.
