SMITHFIELD, N.C. -- A Spanish teacher at Smithfield-Selma Senior High School resigned this week after handing out an assignment that some students and parents said teaches hate.Khalid Chahhou, who was in his first year of teaching in Johnston County, gave students a worksheet in which they were to translate words and find them within a word-search puzzle.
Some students started uncovering strange words in the process.
"There were words like 'kill,' then I saw it said 'destroy America,'" Eric Herrera said.
As they read on, students found the puzzle contained a paragraph that contained the following phrases:
* "Sharon killed a lot of innocent people," a possible reference to former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
* "Palestine is not a terrorist group."
* "Allah help destroy this body of evil making humanity miserable."...
School administrators said they confronted Chahhou about an unidentified concern Wednesday and he resigned....
Chahhou, who also teaches Arabic at a religious school affiliated with the Islamic Association of Cary, told WRAL in a telephone interview that students got the wrong message from the assignment.
"When I made the assignment, I was upset and angry about a story I recently saw on the news. If any message appears, it is more of a message to myself, not to my students. I never meant to hurt or upset any students or parents," he said.
Unbelievable ! One has to wonder how many more like him are teaching in our schools, who haven't yet been noticed. I'm sure his inexperience led him to be so blatant, and that's what gave him away. More experienced teachers are likely more careful and insidious.
He made forty copies of his message to himself? No, he intentionally did it. Maybe he's thinking he's doing subliminal jihad. He should be fired and watched by the police. His Arabic classes he teaches should be audited. No, I changed my mind. He really shouldn't be allowed to teach in this country.
This is more like wishful thinking from Muslims. After all, America is the great Satan, right?
Wow, when I had Spanish class in 7th and 8th grade we never did stuff like this! Why do other kids get all the fun? I wish I could have had geometry and algebra with him too! "If Muhammad is wearing an explosive pack with a blast radius of 20 feet and expects to kill 30% and wound 50% of Zionist Jewish dogs within that area, how many enemies of God can he send to Hell on his way to Paradise in a toy shop measuring 10 by 10 feet?" Problems like that would have made it really interesting.
On another note, I have to say this story contains a line that takes the fetish of "objectivity" to absurd levels. "...an assignment that some students and parents said teaches hate." Why can't the reporter just say it teaches hate? Or must he/she write, "...and according to some observers, the sky is blue." When the sky IS blue, the reporter should just say so. And when an assignment says, "Allah help destroy this body of evil making humanity miserable" DOES teach hate. Or maybe reporters should start writing, "...the United States of America, a nation alleged to consist of colonies that some say won its independence from Great Britain in 1783 and is said to be located between Canada and Mexico,..."

If this kind of behaviour is not immediate grounds for deportation, then we may as well give up right now. I saw this and was livid. And it seems nothing is going to be done about it!
I wish I knew who to write to in this case. I can't stand just sitting here and doing nothing about these outrageous incidents that keep on happening, while no one cares because they're too busy watching Hollywood weddings and other such nonsense.

Perhaps we should encourage other high-school students to notice things like this and report them to blogs like this one--peculiar assignments from their teachers, odd comments interjected into lessons, and most especially, evidence of personal bias against particular students. Such as a Muslim teacher flunking a Jewish student despite doing decent work.
Why is it that with the poverty , despair , violence and just about every other good thing Islam brings the people around the world, that so many damn Muslims think that Islam is the way and is the light, and has all the answers for mankind? with a track record like Islam has, especially in the last 20 years , it's unbelievable that one could argue the merits of Arranged marriage, public beheadings, rape, murder etc...

This is just so typical of Islamic "education." Don't teach kids anything that will make them better people and productive citizens, but rather teach them to be enraged and hateful.

When I was teaching adult literacy through a program at the library a few years ago I was always looking for easy but fun ways ways to teach language use. Word puzzles were a big favorite. Off the top of my head, I did puzzles with assorted themes--local Oakland landmarks, Bay Area cities, animals in the zoo, countries in Africa, various Holiday puzzles like Christmas and Hallowe'en.
Hmm--I never did use the phrases "kill", "destroy America" or (my favorite) "Allah help destroy this body of evil making humanity miserable." The idea that you could innocently use this in a lesson plan for high school kids is ludicrous.
I'm glad he resigned from the public school where he was teaching Spanish, but it sounds as though he is still teaching at the "religious" (read Islamic) school. I doubt he will have to be so circumspect--I'm sure he can a lot more open about teaching hate there.
That was one of the more disturbing things I've read. Why is the man still here?
Maybe we can get people pulling crap like this deported if we try a different approach with the Pelosis of the world. We're not tossing him out, no, we're...helping him resettle where he obviously fits better! Yeah, that! If he hates America so much it would only be a kindness to help him leave, right? I just sent an email to WRAL.com suggesting that a logical followup to this story might be someone from WRAL strolling over to the Islamic Assn of Cary (IAC) and asking a couple of questions.
1. How do the leaders of the IAC feel about behavior such as this, ie do they condone or condemn it?
2. What are they doing to counter this sort of behavior since it is inimical to the stated drumbeat of the peacefulness of Islam?
3. What exactly is the teachers position in the IAC and do they forsee keeping someone with these views in a position of authority as a teacher there?

A fad among some tony private schools is to have a nice Muslim teacher. Part of Diversity Training which is, after all, the Great Business of America these days. Everyone is quite pleased, quite self-satisfied in a Podsnappian sort of way. "We reject the haters and the naysayers, etc." All very predictable. All very dangerous, in ways that have been elaborated here, for the seemingly innocuous cna have permanent consequences in limiting free and easy discussion (the mere presence of a Muslim teacher can do much to inhibit free and open discussion, so scared are so many to express their views, or even to arrive at views that might be worth expressing).
