THE SPECTRE of a nuclear race in the Middle East was raised yesterday when six Arab states announced that they were embarking on programmes to master atomic technology.The move, which follows the failure by the West to curb Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, could see a rapid spread of nuclear reactors in one of the world’s most unstable regions, stretching from the Gulf to the Levant and into North Africa.
The countries involved were named by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. Tunisia and the UAE have also shown interest.
All want to build civilian nuclear energy programmes, as they are permitted to under international law. But the sudden rush to nuclear power has raised suspicions that the real intention is to acquire nuclear technology which could be used for the first Arab atomic bomb.
Let's see here... a missile able to deliver a war head to major European cities, a nuclear war head developed by Arab states, falls into hands of Muslims radical extremist fundamentalist jihadis... yup, quite a cocktail for future Europe... or unfuture Europe.

A ban by Western (and other non-Muslim) countries on permitting Muslims to receive training in nuclear engineering, nuclear physics, and indeed in any field relevant to the making of major weaponry, must and can be instituted. No more A. Q. Khans. And much more vigilant monitoring of every movement, every order for every bit of equipment, from any Muslim country or for that matter group or individual. Monitor, and check, and whenever necessary, disrupt -- just as the Iraqi nuclear project was disrupted, first in 1981 by the Israeli attack on the Osirak reactor, then from 1991 on by the regime of sanctions, and then again in 2003 by the American invasion that ensured, through the seizure of Iraqi scientists and disruption of all chains of supply and funding, that it would be hard, for quite a while, to restart such a program.
Iran is seen by some as a problem that we should let Israel solve, as if only Israel were threatened. But it is not only Israel. It is the entire Westren world. Indeed, it is also the world of the sheikdoms, and Saudi Arabia, though they would greet news of any Western attack with pre-fabricated outrage.
Not the least of the problems connected with Iraq is the way in which this gets in the way of everything having to do with proper planning for dealing, from the air (not land) with Iran's nuclear project.
If Ameridan troops are still in Iraq in January 2009, , and the Iranian project has not been dealt with, then the Iraq War will have been the greatest fiasco in American history. And it is all so avoidable, so unnecessary.
This does not concern me. If Hugh thinks that letting the shia and sunni go after each other is good for the Christian world, then imagine how much better than equation becomes when they go after each other with nukes.
In fact, if we follow that thinking to its ultimate conclusion, we should GIVE nukes to those countries. I say we give them what they want and let them get burned. Why should we protect muslims from other muslims? Why should we just allow them machine guns and bullets? If they want to kill each other, let's facilitate that on the scale they seek.
And if they use one of those devices on the Christian world, then that will usher their demise all that much faster. So it is a win/win situation for us.

With the arrogance and rivalries of the Muslim Countries, I’d agree with August 22 that this might not be a bad thing. Its one thing to wrap a chunk of Uranium with explosives, something completely different to deliver a warhead, and another to deliver a coordinated series of warheads through a defensive perimeter. Not to say it couldn’t happen, it could. But its far more likely that the weapons would be used locally. If a half dozen 15-kiloton warheads went off in the US, it would be a catastrophe and millions would die. But that’s one or two percent of the population, and would likely result in an Isaiah response: Behold, I shall make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shall thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and thou shalt makes the hills as chaff.
If the conclusion is that the final solution is nuclear, its far better that it be local. The Russians have thousands of ‘big boy’ bombs that could end the world as we know it, and they could partner with the Arabs for some misguided reason against the West.

I read an article in today's paper about the latest UN scare, the result of "extensive scientific studies", which warns that in less than thirty years, there will be no more fish in the world. The oceans will be so polluted and over fished that future generations will never see a shrimp, lobster, clam, salmon, flounder, etc. I believe that about as much as I believed the world's population would be so huge by 1990 that it would be impossible to produce enough food and people would be dying of starvation by the millions, or the next ice age was fast approaching and would bring earth to a standstill by the year 2000. These two predictions of doom were also "scientific facts" back in the seventies.
But now the worthless socialists at the UN can dispatch their inspectors to monitor nuclear projects throughout the ME and it will all lead nowhere, as usual. And just imagine the expense, the need for even more money to feed that bottomless pit.
Instead of creating future disasters that are likely to never occur or which cannot be controlled by man, why in the hell can't they focus on the real threats in the world, like islam and muslims? Why are we even in the UN? It is a behemoth debacle. France will probably offer to give them nuclear technology for "peaceful" purposes, to avert any bomb threats. And Russia will sell them everything they need to build bombs, and send their technicians to help. And the UN will ignore it all and send inspectors and the vicious circle never ends, a broken record of failure after failure. But we must avoid conflicts at all costs, even our own destruction.
What a strange world we live in. Imagine all the poverty that could be eliminated with the UN budget, or the money FEMA squandered on Katrina, our tax dollars.

It could be bad news OR it could be good news. The reason why this could turn out good are:
(1) I know I sound like a broken record but the U.S. is very close (if not already) to a workable missile defense. So a missle based attack is remote and will only become more remote as time progresses and our technology improves.
(2) The Arabs and Persians hate each other could just as easily attack each other with their new toys. That would be good. They could also attack Europe and Russia which only serve them right for giving them the technology in the first place. Russia will fire back and no more Islam. Once again good.
The only negative is Islamic groups will get material into the the U.S. and make dirty bombs. My view is hopefully after one such attack the American people will wake up and demand a nuclear attack on lets say....Mecca. Once again good.
The fact is we are going to lose lots of people. Does it really matter if the attack is a series of conventional attack or non-conventional? Also heck we could be in a mini-civil war within 10-15 years anyway with muslims within the country. So the nuclear missile attack from Iran or Arabia is not high on my list real options unless the Iranians or Arabs get a hold of that stupid swedish silent sub that has been sinking all of our ships in war games in the pacific. It appears that Pakistan already has one. They are good for defense but I wonder with modifications and perhaps some refueling points along the way if one could not get over the the U.S. coast with a nuke and set it off within a port. No worries, barges would pick up and transport goods, we have plenty of flat beaches. Things would cost a few cents per dollar more, no real harm. We could cross load hundreds of ships daily. The one thing we rule the world at is the movement of goods. Unlike muslims we work out solutions and use them.

Does this occur before or after we have already been attacked? We rule lots of things but we are rather slow in preventing a problem until after it has already been exploited. A poster above analogizes Sunni and Shi'a Arabs fighting over money and power -- over who is to rule, and who deserves to rule -- in Iraq, with what he assumes would be Sunni and Shi'a use of nuclear weapons only against each other, and then says this does not concern him.
But such weapons could be used against Infidels, including most obviously Israel. Let's leave aside the moral damage done to the Western world were it to have allowed this to happen -- damage possibly fatal to its civilizational elan and certainly to its ability to live with itself (or at least that is the reaction that should be forthcoming), what would happen to the Western world if all of Israel, all of Jerusalem, the entire place known to Western Christendom as the Holy Land, were to be destroyed by nuclear weapons? This would have no effect? Thanks to our liberal universities encouraging thousands of muslims into taking our most scientific oriented courses. Advanced scientific knowledge is a done deal, all they need is material. They understand nuclear physics and they will build them.
What is next? Violent people have to be dealt with using an even more violent means. There are no moral questions here. Someone one will cause us to respond. It is just a matter of time. The only victory that can be gained is less traffic on our roadways and the knowledge of none of our tax dollars spent on building, storing all these nukes was wasted.
This was to be expected, and I'm surprised that it's taken so long for them to make their private conclusions public. Once America failed to act against Iran, EVEN AFTER 9/11, the whole world equilibrium has been knocked horribly ajar. We're badly underestimating their confidence, and we're ignoring their swagger. They're fully confident that the future belongs to them, and if we don't wrest control of our foreign policy away from our establishment, they're going to be right, for the future will belong to them.
The problem is that you can’t ‘unring’ the bell with WMDs. Once the knowledge is there (it is) and the Uranium is enriched (it either is or will be shortly), it is just a matter of time before a country can go nuclear. Israel may be literally blessed in that the prevailing wind it to its back. A large percentage of the casualties in a Tel Aviv blast would be in the West Bank and beyond. Let’s hope that its entry points have sufficient inspection procedures to prevent a bomb from being smuggled in (a good bet).
Everybody concentrates on nuclear weapons; it’s strange to say that nuclear bombs are over-rated, but more attention should be paid to the biological threat. Iran is reportedly cloning sheep. That doesn’t sound scary but the reality is that if sheep can be cloned and/or modified, then so can viruses. This is the bigger threat in my eyes. A low-grade nuclear attack could devastate some cities (in the process, the PC blinders would probably also be knocked off), but an engineered virus could cure the world’s over-population problem for centuries. And the sad reality is that the best defense against a biological attack is to utterly annihilate the ideologies that would consider unleashing one. The least-worst solution would be for them to do it to themselves. But it’s a very dangerous game.
As much as we hate to admit it the nuclear club will continue to grow in the coming years. Unfortunately, the upcoming members will be of the "peaceful" variety who long to hasten the Mahdi's arrival or to prove who's closer to Allah. The West is going to have to get over its squeemishness in dealing with these fanatics if it is to survive. For the US, few things seem to be more repugnant than launching a preemptive strike against an enemy. Pearl Harbor was a terrible event in American history and yes, a sneak attack is not the most honorable. However, Pearl Harbor was a bold and very sensible attack when looked at objectively-had Japan hit the aircraft carriers that day the Pacific war would probably have gone differently. The US needs to get over its long standing moral qualms and seriously consider preemptive strikes in the future on Iran and any other irresponsible country before they threaten the entire world. If Israel is in reach by Iranian missiles then Europe won't be far behind. Marry Russian ICBM technology to what Iran already knows and soon enough the US will be under threat as well. Better to hit these infant nuclear missile facilities before they grow to deadly adulthood. The sooner the better.
I have only one word for all the gung-ho, let-'em-have-it, armagedon-now types who are posting here. Fall-out. I already live in a country coping with the aftermath of a nuclear disaster - the UK. Yet again, for the umpteenth year in succession, we have condemned a significant proportion of our home produced food as unfit to eat due to one small, tiny, infinitesimaly minute nuclear 'accident' at Chernobyl.
So, large numbers of islamic countries get the A-bomb and use it. Exactly how are we supposed to survive that particular scenario for God's sake? For heaven's sake, grow up! These are the elements which will do you in if you chose to expose yourself to them shortly after an explosion. Elements with longer half-lives emit radiation, but at a lower rate. If you can hunker down in a basement, the earth will shelter you from the majority of the ionizing radiation. The longer you can stay below ground, the better. After a week or two, the most active elements will be gone and you should move to a rural area.

We cannot allow ANY Muslim country have nuclear weapons. The concept of allowing them to have it in the hopes of obliterating each other is absurd. They will try to destroy Israel first.
We must support Israel in knocking out Iran's nuke program. Hit them hard again and again and again. The US must have nuclear subs and warships to facilitate the constant flow of oil out through the Indian Ocean and to create a blockade for any assistance to Iran. We already have a foothold in Iraq and can use it to maintain a menacing presence to Iran.
Iran and Venezuela will stop selling oil and gas prices will skyrocket. We should be prepared for shortages till we open the Alaska Pipeline.

There is a big difference between the nuclear fallout of a reactor and the fallout of a bomb. Fortunately, bomb fallout radiation does not last very long.
The isotopic signature of bomb fallout is very different from the fallout from a serious power reactor accident (such as Chernobyl). The key differences are in volatility and half-life. And half-life is what we are discussing, namely how long something stays radioactive.
In bomb fallout a large amount of short-lived isotopes are present, in a nuclear reactor the isotopes have much more longevity, they don't decay nearly as fast. And then there is the issue of volatility. Those bomb isotops have lower volatility, so they form a solid much quicker which settles much faster so it travels a lot less.
In other words, you can nuke the middle east and not have to worry about it in Europe. Remember, that Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuked and the ground and water there is not contaminated. People live there, it was never abandoned, and adjacent areas in Japan were never contaminated.
What this all means is that nuclear weapons, are a good solution to the muslim menace, either being used by the Christian world, or being used by the muslims amongst themselves.
We should not discourage this just because we suffer from some sort of misconception about radiation fallout. That is ignorance talking.

Such groups already exist, or so I've heard. They are funded by wealthy, patriotic Americans and Europeans, and some of the financiers are also active members of these paramilitary groups. They are not affiliated with any government but should not be confused with the many anti-government "militias" in certain areas of the U.S. They are neither related nor similar.
As you suggested in your post, these international vigilante groups do not trust Western governments to defend freedom and democracy so they are preparing to do it themselves if necessary. I heard about these guys from a retired army colonel the first time; from an active duty army major the second time; and from the wife of an active duty army colonel the third time. These people are not acquainted with each other and each encounter occurred months apart and in different states. But in each discussion, the description of the people involved was exactly the same; no names were mentioned; and the potential targets were identical.
I don't know if it's an urban myth, wishful thinking, or the real thing. After I heard the same story the third time, I began to think it could really be true. Some of the men affiliated with these groups are former military, but not all of them. I do know that many of our military people fully understand the threat of islam; they are as cognizant of what's happening in Europe, and everywhere muslims migrate, as we are, and they are fully aware of the islamic agenda and the jihad against the West. But they are constrained by a pernicious and debilitating political correctness that has permeated the armed forces, especially since 9-11. And they say it gets worse every day, the primary source of low morale and early retirement among military officers. They compare the restraints imposed upon our military to Vietnam, and lament that they are expected to fight this "war" with one hand tied behind their backs.
I guess we can hope such people exist, because current trends indicate they might be the only hope we'll ever have. Why do we have the most lethal fighting force in history if we're afraid to use it?

Why don't you read the posts again and calm down; nobody is trying to make "us" look like a bunch of terrorists. We were merely discussing an interesting theory, or perhaps an interesting reality, but we were hardly advertising or recruiting members for a terrorist group.
Frankly, I hope the stories about these paramilitary groups are true; it would be comforting to know there's somebody out there willing to fight back against the rabid enemies of civilization while elected governments tell lies, fight wars in the wrong places, and devise elaborate public relations campaigns to "win the hearts and minds" of the umma. I'm not interested in winning anything from these savages, but I do want to see them utterly defeated, humiliated, and preferably eradicated, and I don't care who does it.

This is also beyond a comprehension for a common folk in the street; to believe that a bunch of terrorist groups sitting in the wilderness of Afghanistan; a retrograde, undeveloped country where; wher, even to fetch a coca cola can is a Hercules job; were able to do all this so precisely. This has also become a most controversial issue; for Neocons to make the world believe in their claim.
A superficial effort to blemish Islam; is just to spread ignorance and pitch the different societies; against each other. Judaic and its reformed version Christianity are the stepping stones to reach up for the summit where; Islam awaits, as a benefactor for the mankind. Islam is a refined and filtered product of Almighty God.
More you malign it and try to push it down; It springs up more…gloriously.
Islam has come to stay. This is God’s design that Islam shall prevail over all the previous denominations. The arrogant and ignorant people can only do this; like the way, they did with a humble person like Jesus; that they put him on cross to die a humiliating death. Resultant; Jesus status, in the eyes of God was raised and Jesus was elevated to ever high, the lofty stations. This should not be difficult to grasp for all my Christian friends. No body has ever been successful to put up barriers in way of God.
This is common knowledge now that Neocons policy of ‘Fallacy and Deception’ is failing miserably; on all fronts. The last minute effort to hoke up a few by creating a 'Islamist issue' in the society and getting few votes for conservative in mid-term election by spreading misinformation and rabble rouse the people; may turn to be a futile effort.
