VIENNA (AFP) - Women are increasingly the victims of violence in Iraq, as direct targets of assassinations and as widows left without support after the deaths of their husbands, an Iraqi women's activist said."Many women activists have been murdered, many women university professors. Many women physicians have been killed, women in the police forces, reporters and journalists," Rajaa al-Khuzai, president of the Iraqi National Council of Women, told a news conference in Vienna.
"We are losing an average 100 Iraqi (men) every day ... so I think (we have an additional) 3,000 widows every month... and all of them are young and have no support for them and their families," she added.
Al-Khuzai, a trained gynaecologist, was one of the first women in Iraq's interim Governing Council and was a member of the drafting committee for the new Iraqi constitution.
She then set up the Iraqi Widows Organisation, which promotes women's rights and provides material and other support to mostly young widows, often with children.
"We need to train and educate these young women ... by educating women we are educating all Iraqis," she said, adding her organisation could help secure the future of Iraq.
"If we want to see stability in the region we have to highlight the role of the women ... women who will make the change on the ground," said Edit Schlaffer, chairwoman of the Vienna-based Women Without Borders, which organized the talk.
Before Saddam Hussein's regime, Iraqi women enjoyed more rights than most of their counterparts in the region and even during the 1980s, "men were involved in the (Iran-Iraq) war and women took over", Al-Khuzai said.
"We played the role of the mother and father in the home."
But now "women are very easy targets," especially high-profile women such as herself, she added.
so much for reforming Islam at least in terms of womens rights. this is why I dont understand western feminists love for Islam and hatred for other faiths. In Islam they will KILL you if you want womens rights...
With all this mindless violence going on in Iraq nowadays one day somebody will call this era of Iraqi history "The Lost Generation". What an utter mess that place is.

Well, allah is a hypocrite. On one hand, he tells men to treat women with kindness. Then in the same breath, he says beat them.
Now he tells women to be righteous. Apparently, righteous in islam is, keeping your legs open for your husband, don't bitch at him after he's spent the last month with the other wives and has forgotten to bring you and your children food, don't say anything when he beats you, look the other way when he thighs your baby or has sex with tomorrow's dinner.
To top it off, after a lifetime of righteous, if allah doesn't send her to Hell, she gets to clean semen stains off the bed from his jaunts with 72 virgins and pearly boys.
This gives reason to believe allah/Satan is one and the same.
This is why we need Robert Spencer's clear voice.
On the one hand, we have female North American Muslim converts who call themselves feminists and declare in the media that Islam is highly respectful of women. On the other hand, we have many Muslim countries in which women are denied equal rights and even murdered, all in the name of Allah.
Who are we to believe? As Mr. Spencer writes, we have to look to the texts that these "extremists" use to justify their actions. And then we have to ask why the "moderates" are not loudly denouncing these texts and immediately creating a peaceful Muslim sect with a new, peaceful dogma.
Last night's Michael Coren show was interesting. The topic was Islam and Christianity. There was a man from the Muslim Canadian Congress on who seemed like a decent, thoughtful man. But, when asked about the death sentence for apostasy, he said he would not say if it was right or wrong. He said he was troubled by it and agreed that most Muslim scholars interpreted the text as meaning what it says: apostates must be killed. So, he is troubled by it, but he won't renounce it. Why the heck not?
That's one of the big questions for me. If he's a "moderate Muslim" and a good man, why can't he say that he rejects outright the notion that an apostate should be killed? (Who knows, maybe one day he will.)
If he is concerned about his own death and eternal damnation, then I can understand that. But what does that mean if someone else left Islam and an imam decided that he had to be killed? If he thinks it's the will of Allah, will he do anything to stop it?
(I'm just using this man as an example.)
And what kind of God would demand that someone be murdered for going astray? Jesus' parable of The Prodigal Son brings tears to my eyes every time I read it. Even if Allah was the only true god and someone was wrong to leave him, what if the apostate just made a mistake and, if given time, would realize his error and want to return to Allah? Oh, too late, someone's chopped off his head and he's burning in hell forever.

I tend to find that every time an Islamofascist/apologist "expert" disagrees with Mr.Spencer the text supports him.

For the same reason that Hamid Mir accuses Robert, in pointing out the real contents of Qur'an and Hadith, of forcing him, Hamid Mir, to learn of certain disturbing and unpleasant teachings of Islam and, having learned about them, accept them in toto.
For Islam demands submission. Submission is all. Not thought, not questioning, not deciding that some parts must be rejected. Submission to the declared will of Allah. It is a religion that encourages mental slavery, that demands mental slavery. Some escape by becoming apostates. Others can't do that, don't know quite how to do that. So they pretend and live a lie, based on wilful ignorance. But now there is no room for wilful ignorance. Everything is now capable of being known, and is being more widely known, among Infidels too, so there is no longer a possibility of denying or pretending. Those who call themselves Muslims must choose.
Once to every man and nation/Comes the moment to decide.
It's up to them. If they continue, after learning about what Islam is all about, to call themselves loyal Muslims, that is a declaration of war on Infidels. The war may be conducted openly, or it may be conducted through the deception that Muhammad talked about ("War is deception") and certainly practiced. But they should be seen as soldiers in that war being conducted against all Infidels, perhaps not active soldiers, perhaps merely on inactive duty, in the reserves, but soldiers nonetheless in an army of enemy aliens whose hostility to us has no end, because no end to such hostility is permitted by the Qur'an and Sunnah. And that must be grasped and thoroughly assimilated by Infidels.

It is curious that the Mo's would do something that is ultimately against their own interests - killing their very breeding stock. Granted, women need to be kept in their place, especially to validate the sexually inept "manhood" of the Arab/Muslim man, but rape (especially with impregnation - propagating the umaa) should do the trick... and it's an honored Muslim tradition, n'est-ce pas?
