I’d suggest that we don't need seventy-nine action items, we need five:
1. Move the men and material to a fortified, isolated location in New Kurdistan, where their job is to survive and maintain readiness.
2. Push for a Constitutional Amendment to ban Islam in the US and humanely repatriate those who choose to retain their beliefs.
3. Communicate the truth about Islam to the American people. Stress that the conflict between the Sunni and Shia is 1400 years old and guilt on our part over secretarian violence is inappropriate.
4. Bomb Iran’s nuclear program. Repeat as necessary as history moves forward.
5. Reconvene Cheney’s energy task force and give them the green light to hire private mercenaries to conquer the oil fields of the Persian Gulf as the Arab States fall into chaos. The US should acknowledge a new government (Halliburtistan?) and provide security assurances in exchange for 40% of the oil royalties and first right of refusal for sales.

What disgusts me is how the military (Rumsfeld, etc), the only guys actually working on the problem (under outrageous rules of engagement), are the fall guys for yet another political failure. The politicos are determined to fail, and they fully intend to record that dismal outcome for posterity as a failure of the military.
From a purely military perspective, the enemy has a (not the only) huge and obvious strategic weakness.
We could easily turn the tables on the jihadists in a few weeks. Islam cannot sustain any kind of economy outside of oil, which provides the Muslims with their cash. Islam cannot fund their world supremacist project--jihadist armies, insane clerics preaching in mosques and madrassas all over the planet, Islamic global dawa, and genocidal nuclear projects--without lots of cash.
Seize the Iraqi oil fields. Sell the oil to finance our military operations and a counter-jihad. Make ready to do the same to Iran and Saudi Arabia. Take the fight to the enemy. Hit them where it hurts--the pocketbook. Put them on the defensive. Islam cannot remain dangerously aggressive without a constant supply of loot to sustain it.
And if we fail to do this, don't talk about "military failures." From a strategy standpoint, there is nothing "military" about the present "war on terror."

I sit here and listen to all the concern about where we are going and what can we do. The Constitution answers that question clearly and emphatically. To paraphrase, "when the government no longer represents the wishes and needs of the common man (and woman), the public has a right and a DUTY to remove the offenders or form of government and replace it with a form of government that addresses their group needs." I had a nightmare the other night. It was really zany. Baker's new plan to 'save our ass in Iraq'
1) Sacrifice Israel.
2) Make Syria and Iran our partners to establish stability in the region, meanwhile looking the other way while Iran gets The Bomb.
I have tried to step back from the feeling of anger at a so called defeat, I am well aware of Hugh's views and of course of those others who seek that mythical beast, the moderate Muslim.
Looking at this in a detached way what did it do, this war in Iraq, OK at this point Al Queda and Iran are probably making the most of the humbling of the USA, perhaps more of the hot headed sexual misfits will head off to jihad, but does this make it any more likely, I certainly do not think so, they would anyway, because that is what Islam has made them into.
We have realised something here and it has even reached some of the of moonbats, perhaps in their deepest and darkest thoughts.

- That while the ignorance of Islam is applied to vast masses of humanity then there will be a continuing war

They will soon realize that talking with a person who does not even see you as a human is a zero sum game...
What have we done, well we went there as infidels and even as hated infidels we acted in such a way that the Muslims in that place could see that we are not quite the devils they think we are, remember that comment from an inmate at a notorious prison, "bring back the Americans, please..." Do not forget that when the Shia and the Sunni really get to work, what does that do for Islam, and while people will try to blame that on America, it will not stick my friends, because whatever happened in Iraq while the Americans were there, was a walk in the park as compared to the hell that is coming.
However one issue will get in the way of this is the lack of MSM coverage of the Shia Sunni war, who without the carcass of the USA to pick over will ignore it and we must not let that happen. That is why we must clear out the cesspit of AP, the BBC and Reuters, which is the Islamic infiltration of the Media, again they became over arrogant and have over-played their hands so that even the most trusting Westerner can see it if he has half a brain, this is imperative and must happen.
I happen to believe that the USA is now ready for the next stage of the war now that the attempt to bring democracy has failed, a good lesson that and should not be forgotten, now we can go for it with a little bit more aggression, less of this PC rubbish, of course at this point the moonbats seem to have the victory, but it is Pyhrric, because our enemies are too arrogant and never miss a chance to do the wrong thing.
And as for this talking, well it will go nowhere, and that final illusion will be removed, my only fear is that this will mean the destruction of Israel before we move to the war, or that it is so late that Europe is a lost cause.
Just as the Europeans are waking up to the threat and becoming more assertive, the Muslim world will be kicking ten bells of hell out of each other, where will all that money go?
A hot war breaking out between the Sunni and Shia, we will have the Saudi's using their oil weapon against Iran who are already spending too freely with a restive population, and if Iran attacks Saudi Arabia then this brings in the USA, and it was not USA aggression was it. And if that does not happen that war will spread, because it is a war to control the Muslim world.
A defeat, I think not, because while the authors of this report are feeding the idiots what they want to hear, the real plan is coming along pretty damn nicely. However this could all be a mistake and we fell into it, perhaps, but there are a number of signs that make me think that this was pretty much what was intended all along. I think that the original American plan was never to bring democracy, it was a cover as is this report.
If the war was to bring democracy to the Middle East then we failed, but the war was to remove one of the AXIS of evil and make it so weak as to be worthless, to suck in Al Queda, to cause disarray in the Muslim world and to let our enemies do the fighting which will start soon.
Perhaps the Democrats will realize their error and seek to keep the troops there, but no, they have screwed themselves. This is not a defeat, because I feel that the American plan was never to bring democracy to Iraq.
Of course any human would like democracy to have taken hold and if that would have happened then great, but when people look back in history all they will see is a great and noble effort by the USA to bring hope and freedom to the Muslim world which was destroyed by the forces of Islam, that the two branches of Islam then squared up to fight each other after the USA withdrew.

Yup that fool was Tojo -- head of the Army; Yamamoto, head of the Japanese Navy -- bombed Perl, BUT advised repeatedly against the idea.
Hirohito -- Emperior and resident diety, also thought it was not a good idea to attack the US; and the Japanese ambassadors in D.C. were hoping that the war would not come.

You are quite right. Do you really think that Bush and his cronies are THAT smart? That they'd have planned this all along - KNOWING that you CANNOT bring democracy to an islamic country? I just keep thinking back to the original war plans for Iraq, I also read a Q&A session with one of the UK Parliamentary committees on the planning for the war.
But the level of what ifs that people apply to such things as part of planning is quite amazing and I would think that as political will caused the defeat in Vietnam, I would expect that in the overall war on terror that it would be factored in. It was the also the reason for a number of losses including Korea and Suez.
I think it was realized quite early on that it would be a long war and it would stretch over many administrations, some more bellicose then others.
War is deception is it not, in fact it may be in the future that the loss of a democratic Iraq at this point makes it more likely in the future as the blame of what is coming will rest with the Islamics. Because the ideals that George Bush are still there in the minds of many people.
To me the US Army is finely honed and ready for the next stage with many battle hardened troops, we need that.

As for establishing stability and security? Well, 3 out of 4 ain't bad. At least the USA can say it tried. It shouldn't matter if the USA's credibility crumbles for failing on the other 1/4 (see Vietnam since 1975 to get an idea how the USA survives credibility problems). What should be emphasized is that once the USA leaves Iraq, chaos or not, it gives Islam a golden opportunity to show the world how governing this hellhole should really be done and how superior this "so-called-perfect-complete-way-of-Allah" is, over that of the "blasphemous" ways of America. Islam should be confidently proclaiming, "Step aside and let the divine pros do it, kafir amateurs!" Imagine...if Allah and his "victory-smelling" followers come through and manage to build a prosperous, safe, free, utopian Iraq, with the whole world watching them shame the bumbling Americans in the process, think of all the converts it'll bring in. It'd be the biggest P.R. coup for Islam in 1400 years!

There is nothing new in the Baker-Hamiltion report. Going backwards in history to diplomacy with Syria and Iran is a self limiting strategy. Even if we try it it will fail and we will be back where we are now. The best thing to do about the commission report is to ignore it. It is likely that various individuals will praise the parts they agree with and ignore other parts.
It seems that the only qualification the members of the commission were required to have was senility. What they have been able to agree on are the lowest common denominators of a group of has beens and never weres.
The Bush program that is being attacked was a new approach that actually tried to change some imoral things in the heart of the Islamic Middle East instead of the business as usual of realpolitic and supporting of various despots ("at least he is our sonofabitch").
We may have gotten the sequence of things wrong (maybe we needed more security and economic development before increased freedom and democracy); we certainly overestimated the patience and confidence of many in the US and the rest of the West; and we have exposed (again, we should have known it) a distinct disinclination of our people to project strength and reject blame for problems caused by others. Perhaps the most worrying mistake was the underestimation of and failure to counter the venality and short sighted petty power games of the left.
Samuel Huntington was right, there is a clash of civilizations going on (probably always going on in one form or another). The Islamic Civilization (forgive the oxymoron in the interest of the Huntingtonian explaination) is in conflict with all other civilizations. The Islamic Civilization lacks a core state. It is difficult for the Western Civilization to create a core state in another civilization and if it were ever possible, it would require help from other civilizations. This help is not forthcoming from the Orthodox Civilization or the Sino/Confucian Civilization at this time even though they are in confrontation with the Islamic Civilization. This is because of oil and their percieved conflict with the West.
If there is conflict and instability within the Islamic shpere, that may not be all bad. Why are some of the same people who supported the Iran/Iraq war in a panic now if Shia are killing Sunni?
We all need to take a deep breath, get more comfortable with instability and take the long view of defending our civilization. Raise your kids to know and love our values. We must mend our fences with Europe and help them. Enhance our relationships with Canada, Austrailia, Israel, Latin America, Japan and all others to the extent possible. To answer your first question, I own a small arsenal and plenty of ammunition, just in case the UN and the Democrats succeed in making ammo scarce or slap huge taxes on it.
Our borders are defendable and most Americans want them defended. It is the globalist, internationalist, New World Order politicians who are scheming furiously and furtively to destroy our sovereignty and abolish our borders that refuse to defend them. The open borders lobbies are powerful and influential, and the ACLU and other similar organizations relentlessly work to keep the courts swamped with lawsuits and injunctions to defend the "rights" of illegal aliens. It's a tough battle, and with the left-wing judiciary legislating from the bench, we could lose it.
Mark Steyn has more faith in us than he has in any other Western nation; in fact, I believe he calls us the "last best hope." The agenda of many American politicians and elites is not what the American people want, but what they want. And why they want to destroy America remains an enigma to me, but perhaps some day I'll figure it out.
