Dr. Adel Eldin is "a Hernando County cardiologist and leader in the Muslim community" there. In this piece in the St. Petersburg Times (thanks to all who sent this in) he manifests deep denial about Islamic terrorism, and the resulting "Islamophobia."
Let the world know, American Muslims strongly condemn terrorism and all terrorists, whoever they are and wherever they may be. We love our country and are very proud to be American and Muslim.Taking a scientific approach to the problem, first we should diagnosis it, then treat it.
The Diagnosis: The disease called Islamophobia (or fear of Islam and Muslims with the rise of terrorism). It has been perpetuated mostly by ignorance, and partly with deception and misinformation before and after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
As much as terrorists hijacked our religion, extreme right-wing neoconservatives hijacked our administration, and it seemed to every Muslim that America is at war with Islam the religion, not with the terrorists who have hurt us. As you, we wanted to bring terrorists to justice. It seemed the facts did not matter anymore, as negative and false perceptions became the rule, not the exception, about Islam and Muslims.
Islam in the media is seen as violent, aggressive, threatening, supportive of terrorism, and engaged in a clash of civilization (an idea put in Samuel Huntington's 1998 book The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order). Thus, anti-Muslim hostility is seen, which includes demonizing Islam and attacking our prophet and holy book (the Koran), and waging a smear campaign on radio talk shows, TV programs and the Internet.
The treatment: I believe the therapy will include education and outreach and kindness. Ignorance constitutes 90 to 95 percent of the problem; the remaining 5 percent of the problem will need to be dealt with by law enforcement.
Of course, "ignorance" is the problem. Ain't it always. And wouldn't you know it, every time a Muslim kills a non-Muslim in the name of Islam, more and more people grow ignorant of Islam. Dr. Eldin's article, of course, is part of a larger effort to convince Americans that any Muslim who commits violence in the name of Islam is not a genuine Muslim, and that the genuine article is peaceful, peaceful, peaceful. And tolerant. One problem with such "education" efforts is that they do nothing to prevent "genuine" Muslims from turning without warning into "false" ones.
Do Muslims in America really want to decrease fear and mistrust directed toward them? Easy. Just follow these four simple steps:
1. Stop blaming violent acts committed by Muslims in the name of Islam on the various sins of unbelievers.
2. Establish nationwide, compulsory programs in American mosques to teach against the jihad ideology and Islamic supremacism, by means including an explicit and definitive rejection of the literal meaning of many passages of Qur'an and Hadith.
3. Stop saying violent or hateful things in private when you think no non-Muslims are around. For example, the imam Umar Abdul-Jalil, executive director of ministerial services for the New York City Department of Correction, was secretly recorded last year while speaking at an Islamic conference in Arizona. Muslims, he said, invoking Qur’an 48:29, must be "compassionate with each other" and "hard against the kufr [unbeliever]." In Britain, Hamid Ali, imam of the mosque frequented by the July 7 bombers, praised the bombers and called their terror attack "good" in a conversation secretly recorded by an undercover journalist. Publicly, he had condemned the attacks. In a mosque in the Czech Republic, a Muslim secretly filmed by a documentary filmmaker says Islamic Shari’a law, including the stoning of adulterers, should be adopted by the Czech Republic. Cleveland imam Fawaz Damra, who has since been deported for failing to disclose his ties to terror groups, signed the Fiqh Council of North America’s condemnation of terrorism, despite having declared at an Islamic conference that "terrorism, and terrorism alone, is the path to liberation."
Do such incidents mean that every Muslim who professes to have adopted Western notions of pluralism and the equality of dignity and rights of non-Muslims and Muslims is dissembling? Of course not. But they do mean that non-Muslims are perfectly justified in being suspicious even when Muslim profess moderation and opposition to terror. Consequently deeds, not just words, are needed. To conclude my four recommendations, genuinely anti-terror Muslims should:
4. Actively work with Western law enforcement officials to identify and apprehend jihadists within Western Muslim communities.
But it is unlikely that any of that will be done. Instead, these poor mistrusted, misunderstood folks will keep crying "Islamophobia" and trying to manipulate the American legal and political systems.

Oh my, I almost broke some ribs reading that one-it was so funny! Will it be five years? 50? 5000? When doc, when? We've been waiting 1400 years for this to happen so it would be nice to know when this will finally come to pass.

In reading those above insults, keep the following points in mind:
-these insults apply to disbelievers because they are disbelievers (disbelief is the worst crime)
-the insults are assumed to be the words of Allah and are therefore true of disbelievers for all time, until the Last Day
-the disbelievers cannot do anything to improve Allah’s perception of them (He does not accept the good works of the disbelievers), except to believe in and obey Allah.
-the insulting adjectives refer to the inherent character traits of disbelievers
Disbelievers who do good works do so in vain, because they are going to hell anyway (5:5, 18:104-106, also 18:30, 33:19, 47:1-4, 47:32). Their works are as ashes blown away by the wind; they have no control over what they have earned (14:18).
And from the hadith:
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 20:
Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, "Whoever possesses the following three qualities will taste the sweetness of faith:
1. The one to whom Allah and His Apostle become dearer than anything else.
2. Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah's sake.
3. Who hates to revert to disbelief (Atheism) after Allah has brought (saved) him out from it, as he hates to be thrown in fire."
Sounds like an irrational and disproportionate fear or loathing to me, Dr. Eldin. And if you actually knew anything about real phobias, you would realize that "disproportionate" and "irrational" are key characteristics that distinguish fear/hatred that is phobic from legitimate or reasonable fears and concerns. Me, I believed the religion-of-peace-hijacked-by-fundamentalists line until I actually did some research on the Islamic scriptures, Islamic history, and the extent of the present-day problems with Islam globally.
The accusation of Islamophobia is galling, considering that the Islamic texts order Muslims to instill precisely such fear in the non-Muslims:
--Terrorize them, 3:151, 33:26, 59:2, 8:12, 8:57, 8:60. (also see 9:5). 59:13—the disbelievers fear Muslims more than Allah. Note the 3:151 refers to attacking those disbelievers who ascribe partners (Christians, Jews, Idolaters).
8:60. “Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies, of Allah and your enemies, and others besides, whom ye may not know, but whom Allah doth know. Whatever ye shall spend in the cause of Allah, shall be repaid unto you, and ye shall not be treated unjustly.”
And from the hadith:
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220: Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "I have been sent with the shortest expressions bearing the widest meanings, and I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy), and while I was sleeping, the keys of the treasures of the world were brought to me and put in my hand." Abu Huraira added: Allah's Apostle has left the world and now you, people, are bringing out those treasures (i.e. the Prophet did not benefit by them). [Also see Sahih Muslim, Book 004, Number 1062, 1063, 1066, 1067; Sahih Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 87, Number 127 and 141].

Lots of Muslims fear Islam too, and their fear in this sense is warranted (i.e., not a phobia). For example, for a Muslim to directly and publicly condemn and reject unequivocally all of those Koranic insults which I quoted above, he or she could risk being accused of apostasy or blasphemy, the penalties for which are up to and including death, according to the main schools of Islamic jurisprudence.

Robert Crane neglects to mention that Muhammad himself engaged in, or ordered, terrorism against non-Muslims, including deadly raids on caravans, sustained attacks (with mangonels) against fortified villages containing women and children (e.g., Ta'if), and assassinations of mere critics. This fits Crane's definition of hirabah.
What this boils down to is that in Islam, terrorism against non-Muslims for the sake of defending, establishing, or spreading Islam is one form of jihad. On the other hand, any actions or words deemed to be significantly and intentionally against Islam are considered hirabah, war against Allah, spreading mischief (fasad) in the land, etc.

The Constitution of the United States and the koran are at odds. One cannot be loyal to both. Ergo, one is either a good American and a bad Moslem or a bad American and a good Moslem.

An excellent case can be made, that the writers of the Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, and amendments to the Constitution, never
intended for the First Amendment:

...to provide shelter for Islam, which is not strictly a religion, because it is a supremacist political ideology.
It is my opinion that Islam should have its right to be designated a religion in the USA withdrawn, because it tolerates no religion other than Islam.
Communism, Nazism, and Fascism are more similar to Islam than Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism are.
This does not attempt to suggest that Islam should be outlawed, but simply points out that Islam has more in common with political ideologies, than it does with religions.
The thrust of my idea is not to outlaw Islam... it is to have Islam lose its Constitutional protection as a religion, and to have it instead, assigned to the category of a political deology... like Communism, Nazism, and Fascism... and Democracy, and other political ideologies, like Constitutional Monarchies, which are also not

There is a contradiction in the "Moderate Muslim" approach (just one?): They say the Jihadis are not true Muslims, but then when invited to turn them into the police they fall back on "we're not supposed to say anything against fellow Muslims."

I'm a pretty practical guy and check the record first before I put any value behind words such as those spoken by Eldin. In other words deeds matter more than words.

I resent the doctor's implication that it is the non-Muslims who have a problem. The correct Islamic way to avoid extramarital sex is for men and women to keep apart and not mix freely when not married or related by blood. Are those in Africa doing that? Or is it a custom they have fallen into, to circumcise girls to prove their virginity? I am a muslim woman and I can tell you that female circumcision is a debated point, rarely practised overall, and certainly not integral to the faith.

If that's true, it still doesn't speak for anything a Muslim has done to further the advancement of human beings on Earth. As I said in my final sentence, Islam only produces ignorance and death, and I stand by that statement.
Also, I'm not saying that advancements did not occur during Muslim occupation of former-non-Muslim lands. Thabit asked Anas, "O Abu Hamza! What did the Prophet pay her (as Mahr)?" He said, "Her self was her Mahr for he manumitted her and then married her." Anas added, "While on the way, Um Sulaim dressed her for marriage (ceremony) and at night she sent her as a bride to the Prophet . So the Prophet was a bridegroom and he said, 'Whoever has anything (food) should bring it.' He spread out a leather sheet (for the food) and some brought dates and others cooking butter. (I think he (Anas) mentioned As-Sawaq). So they prepared a dish of Hais (a kind of meal). And that was Walima (the marriage banquet) of Allah's Apostle ."þ

There are actually a number of religions that have at times identified those of African origin as being of darker complexion due to some "curse" or "mark" from God. In their first inception, both the Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses claimed that "negroes" where thus marked by God because of an eternal punishment upon them.
Islam isn't the only one, but they're probably the first. They certainly were the first people on earth who enslaved black Africans as a common practice.

The problem with Dr. Eldin's analysis is that he wants to diagnose and treat a perfectly rational fear -- fear based on thousands of acts of terrorism by his brother Muslims.
