Hizballah continues to try to gain control of Lebanon. "Hezbollah chief 'plotting coup,'" from the BBC, with thanks to all who sent this in:
Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora has accused the leader of the Hezbollah militant movement of plotting a coup.He pointed to comments by Hezbollah's Hassan Nasrallah that the opposition would form an interim government without the existing administration.
Mr Siniora said these were tantamount to a plot to overthrow the government.
Although there is a bit of mix-n'-match confusion in the Lebanese line-up, no one should be mislead by the Beranger-dreaming General Aoun and the venal Emile Lahoud as representing more than a handful of supposedly pro-Syrian (really, pro-pocketbook) Christians who will, "Uncle Emiles" to a man, do the work of the current Muslim threat to Christian well-being. And that threat, at this point, now comes from Hezbollah, and Lebanese Shi'a (not, at the moment, from the Sunnis in the PLO camps) and from its backer Syria, even though, within Syria, it is the same Alawite despotism that, by suppressing the local members of the Ikhwan, keeps Syria relatively safe for Christians.
The line-up is this: Christians (those who consider themselves Arabs, and those who, more sensibly, realize that the Phoenicians didn't just disappear, and that despite their being "users of Arabic" there is no reason to consider themselves Arab), Druse, and Sunni Arabs against the los-de-abajo from-the-lower-depths Shi'a.
Might as well show Bush that all his dreams and schemes about "democracy" would mean an end to the Christian power in Lebanon -- a power that deserves, coute que coute, to be preserved, and perhaps strengthened by an infusiion of Christian refugees from Islamic terror, coming from Iraq. Might as well have the Sunnis and Shi'a go at it now, in Lebanon. The headquarters of the Sunni-Shi'a fight will remain in Baghdad, but there will be succursales established in Beirut, Dhahran, Karachi, San'a, Bahrain, and Kuwait. If I had money, I'd buy stock in that company; it's bound to do a booming business over the next few years.
succursales established, Hugh l looked up this and it is about "banking".
Lebanon is a lost cause, if ever you think Europe is on the verge of being islamizated, Lebanon have two feet in the grave.

Lebanon is headed towards civil war. Yet again, the most violent and oppressive elements of Islam will rule the country.
I suppose the multinational peacekeeping force will withdraw and let the Islamists dominate and permit the genocide of the remaining Christian population.
I guess people will then blame the Jews for starting this coup. Wait for it...
I always enjoy reading Hugh's posts. My Latin and Spanish studies help, but every so often I have to drag out the dictionary. His command of the language is quite Buckleyesque. And I mean that as a compliment, Hugh.
Hizbullah should be addressed again by the Israeli armed forces, without any interference from the Israeli government or the U.N.
Let the generals who know how to snuff out these insects finish their job once and for all.
It's a shame that Islamists don't have the balls to fight like men, instead opting to hide behind women, children, and the disabled.
These are not men.

And a contingent of U.S. Marines riding shotgun.
is not surprising that Hezbollah if it has a chance to hijack an entire country would not do so after all that gives it access to the countries money and military weapons including fighter jets and jet bombers it would give Hezbollah more and better weapons attack Israel is with and you can bet that Syria and Iraq will help Hezbollah learn to use the Lebanese armed forces weapons and using precision guided bombs would be a lot better than using unguided rockets, and with Hezbollah in charge of Lebanon they would be able to buy weapons openly if they were the government
Hmmm, hezbollah chief plotting a coup???
Is anyone surprised by this?
I'm not. A blind man can see this stuff coming a mile away.
The Christians will have to leave Lebanon and then the Israelis will have to come in and CARPET BOMB the place!!!
NO more "surgical strikes" - ALL OUT WAR!!!
Signorina Condolcezza Riso Amaro now complains about the Hizbollah threat to Lebanon. However, had US diplomacy, under Condolcezza's personal charge not tried to stop, or encouraged olmert to stop, an Israeli offensive, or even insisted on a cease fire resolution less accomodating to the Hizbullah, then more damage might have been done to the Hizb, and the present situation might have been avoided. Likewise I blame Blair, Chirac and Sinyora himself who could have discreetly and elegantly let the Hizb get more bashed. Sinyora and the Western leaders surely knew that Hizbullah was an instrument for Syria and Iran and a threat to Lebanese sovereignty.
But then again, not even Kofi Annan made an effort to repeat the language of SC res. 1559 that explicitly mandated disarming of the Hizb. Kofi doesn't care about enforcing SC resolutions, unless they are against Israel.
And how is this news? Lebanon's PM outdoes even Western leaders for being clueless. Did he really think Israel fought Hezbollah because it was bored? Anyone with half a brain knows Hezbollah is a deadly snake under Iran's control and that anybody who gets near that snake will die. This idiot is probably regretting that those killer Zionists didn't finish them off when they had the chance. Unfortunately, his incessant whining put a stop to that. Well, now he will have to wait for that snake to bite him. Serves him right.
What a pathetic situation in Lebanon! I didn't understand why Siniora, a Christian, was so careful to criticize Israel for retaliating this summer against Hezbollah in Lebanon--but never held Hezbollah even one bit responsible.
Oh-and then we saw Christian politician Gemayel assassinated recently--one of many cut down in his family-- and it finally started to dawn on me--it is like a mid-east mafia.
The confluence of Syria and Iran there is ever present and is leading to this coup. Christians are leaving Lebanon as fast they can. The question is how soon this will go down, and will Israel move before the attacks escalate again?
