It stands to reason that if you ban something, you're only going to cause it to be more attractive, merely out of the natural human impulse towards curiosity, even more so, if your defense for banning it is "the book is very, very damaging—let me tell you." Obviously Spencer's book has got them running scared.

Our boldness of speech for one (which most of us couldn't imagine living without at this point, although its useful to remind ourselves from time to time of what a precious privelege it is), and our experience of real freedom and security for another (mainly in the last 50 years). This article indicates again how fragile the defenses of Muslims are when it comes to the mere battle of ideas. This article demonstrates that this is a war we can win if enough ordinary, every-day people join the fight in spreading the truth about Muhammad and the religion that he spawned just one person at a time, at whatever humble capacity they can muster. Just this week I've talked to two separate women about my concerns about it. The first is a little bartender I know at my favorite restaurant who I've always had a cordial relationship with since I met her two years ago. She is studying international politics at a nearby university and when I told her about what I've been reading from the Koran, she immediately told me that the Bible was full of violence, too. She also told me that she took a class on comparative religions and that Islam came out smelling like a rose, and when I mentioned to her that her professor might have lied to her she told me that couldn't possibly be true. Hello? I told her about the Sharia law imposed on the people of Somalia lately and how you can get beheaded for a) not wearing your head scarf and b) not praying five times a day toward Mecca. She looked at me like I was so naive. But I planted a seed.

The second young lady I met through business. She was part Chinese and part Pakistani but seemed totally Americanized. I asked her if she was brought up Muslim and she said she was brought up Liberal. She was very engaging, outgoing and good at her job. She had an up-to-date hairstyle and wore fashionable clothes. I broached the subject of Sharia with her and told her I'd been studying Islam for about 2 1/2 years and she thought it was great that I was learning about it. When I pushed her a little on Sharia and told her I had concerns about it, she said, oh really? I don't know if she even knew what it was. She seemed to think it was a good idea but could offer no information about it. I had to be careful, being that we were doing a transaction, but she was helping me so I felt I could push a little bit. The point is, both these girls seemed to think that they knew about Islam but they really didn't seem to.

That is the problem we are facing, and that is the ignorance that we will have to overcome to effectively fight this battle.

I have read Robert's books and blogs, and listened to the talk show hosts, and others since Osama brought this demented belief to our(west) attention in 2001. Not all muslims are ignorant and blind. Saudi Arabia: Indian spared from execution

An Indian worker in Saudi Arabia will not be executed for trespassing into the "only Muslim" part of the holy city of Medina, despite demands for his execution.

Jojo Joseph, who hails from Kerala, was arrested by the Saudi police for allegedly trespassing Medina earlier this week while he was on his way to hospital to see his wife, who had given birth to their child.

Indian ambassador to the kingdom Farook told Arab News on Wednesday that Joseph would not face stiff penalties for his alleged trespass.

He was never tried, did not face an enduring prison sentence, nor the death penalty for his alleged crime, Farook said, denying media reports.

Farook said Joseph had made "enough noise" about his arrest and told his family members that he could be beheaded, but he was released on Tuesday after being detained for three days.

"The Saudi authorities took a lenient view of the case after they were convinced that the man did not deliberately commit the mistake of entering the holy city's restricted areas," the ambassador said.

There is no such recorded incident where a non-Muslim has been executed for trespassing restricted space in Medina or Mecca.

A technical question: what happens when the Pakistani government confiscates all those books? Have the bookstores already bought the books, meaning your publisher gets paid (and the bookstores eat the loss)? Does the Pakistani government reimburse the bookstores? Or does your publisher get screwed on this?

If so, I think the U.S. should retaliate by placing an embargo on, hmmm, what does Pakistan make or sell? Rugs? Qur'ans?

Is it possible that free people, who can talk, ask questions, and learn, know more about islam then the masses who follow islam? What they are told by the religious leaders what islam is about?

That being perhaps true, could explain this action taken by our "friend".

I am trying to secure a copy of the actual Persian text. This will give me some good ammunition when dealing with "fellow" Muslims who applaud him and his progeny. Truly sickening stuff. I read this book, found it very enlightening and well referenced. But then I am not Pakistani.

I did read it while waiting for a plane at Launceston Tasmania Airport, it did seem to generate a few stares I don't know why.

The Indigo Book Store at the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto has Robert Spencer's latest book. (I didn't check for the others.) So it must be possible to order it through Indigo/Chapters (but I always use Amazon if I'm ordering online.)

Bravo Mr. Robert. Books may be banned, but that demonstrates that the Pakistanis are damn scared of the truth. It only shows that a people are quite fond of the filthy "religion" they follow.

After all, whatever good food is provided, pigs would like to foray only in the gutter !

I find the koran contains objectionable material. When can it be pulled from the shelves?

What cultural clues can we draw from the fact that "Shahid Ahmed" translates into "Martyr Ahmed". Who would name their child "Martyr"? Or is this perhaps in reference to something he acheived in his lifetime?

Doesn't the Pakistani book ban beg questions with obvious answers, ones that may speak to Muslims?
If your book is "objectionable," it must be false; if it is false, then it is blasphemous; if it is blasphemous, then why is it banned instead of broadcast to the entire Islamic world to incite more Muslim outrage and violence like the Danish cartoons? Hmmm. Could it be that the clerics don't want Muslims to know the real Muhammed?

Strictly speaking, there is no actual "truth" about "Mohammad the Prophet". The reason being: there is no real evidence that he even existed.
Words on a paper written long after he supposedly died certainly are not confirmation. The beginning of Islam cannot be traced back to "Mohammad". When we go back to the verifiable sources it seems probable that "Islam" was a "government" invention to justify totalitarian control of the population by a ruling elite, and a rationalization for imperial expansion.
Of course that's the basic story(or aspiration) behind most if not all collectivist cults, ideologies, and religions. Simple dogmatism. Absolutism.

It's no surprise an Islamic republic bans books. But those who live in glass-houses shouldn't throw stones. Especially when an actual,contemporay, REAL and very significant act of censorship, persecution, and thought-control is happening in your own back yard. Hypocrites.

My fellow posters, I am new to this forum. I am a warrior. I fight for same kind of liberty and freedom that my father and my grandfather before him fought for. I think like a warrior. I act like a warrior, and I am very likely to post from that perspective. That said,

My fellow brothers in uniform should hold and fortress one village at a time, protect the people in that villiage - especially the teachers. Teach all the women and children how to read. Bring in with the troops a corps of people agricultural, engineering, and contruction ability (peace corps?). Weed out the men who sympathize with the islamists and segregate them while the women and children are learning to read. Teach the men and women a trade, and help them establish a market for unique afghan products in America (mini-marshall plan).

Flood these protected villages with language-simple and profusely illustrated literature that inspires them to aspire to a higher, better, and more noble way of thought and life (special comic books) come to mind. This war, more than any other that I am aware of, is an information war. No amount of chain can hold a mind and SPIRIT set free. The mullah's know this. They fear Robert's book and any alternative literature as much or more than the Pharasees feared Jesus. They will resist and try to destroy any alternative that challenges their power. This is why we must continue to support sending books and alternative reading materials into afghanistan and Pakistan. Yes, it's true that many people in these countries cannot read, but it is also true that it will not always remain that way. If we flood these countries with an over-supply of simply-written, colorful alternative liturature, many many people will pick it up and put it away...instead of throwing it away...even if they cannot read it. One day, if we do this right, many enlightened and educated people from afghanistan will duplicate in Pakistan (out of compassion) that which we (in the West)will have done for the Afghanis.

The battle-front in this war is not in land, but in the mind. Anything we can do to break the strangle-hold of Islamic thought-control over the Afghanis and Pakistanis we, should do. I support Robert's book in Pakistan even if only a few can read it. The Mullahs' can't confiscate all of them). Sooner or later, many people will be able to read. When they do, the seeds of their new-found doubts will grow into a full blown alternative to islamic slavery....freedom!
