Pakistani Supreme Court, Musharraf block 'Taliban law' in Pakistani province

An update on this story. As in Kemalist Turkey, Islamic law is opposed by the force of government power. And that is the only thing blocking its implementation. "'Taleban law' blocked in Pakistan," from the BBC, with thanks to John Doe:

Pakistan's Supreme Court has blocked a fresh attempt to enact a Taleban-style law to enforce Islamic morality in North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

The court instructed the provincial governor not to sign the bill, which is opposed by President Pervez Musharraf.

North West Frontier Province, which is governed by an alliance of religious parties sympathetic to the Taleban, passed the legislation last month.

Last year a similar bill was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

President Musharraf, who says he wants Pakistan to espouse an enlightened, moderate form of Islam, has denounced the bill as fundamental breach of human rights.

Correspondents say it is almost unheard of for the same bill passed by a provincial assembly to be challenged twice in the courts by the federal government.

Boy, Mushy Raff is flirting with death! This guy is quite mystifying-on the one hand he is duplicitous in the extreme, playing both the Taliban and the US like a violin. On the other hand, he shows some guts in this situation by taking the stand he has taken. In an odd way, I kind of like him-he seems better than a lot of Western leaders, who rarely take a strong stand on anything except stupidity.

is Pakistan Supreme Court ruling it really going to make any difference to the tribal leaders they are going to do what they want anyways after all a tribal society is a primitive society and a very parochial one so it's what the men in the tribal council want and they are going to do what they want no matter what the government does

Consummate, garrulous liars alone can afford to take protean "stands" as no one bothers to hold them accountable. Dejavu, like certain set of "inspired verses" supplanting the earlier ones.

The NWFP is not to confused with the newly established state the Islamic Emirate of Northern Waziristan, accorded de facto independence by Musharaf himself, and celebrated by the MSM as a shining example of diplomacy during Musharaf's book promotion tour here in the States barely over a month ago.

yes i like michael savage who sometimes changes positions from day to day. truly the world seems different from one day to the next. life is indeed complex
