The New York Times today recommends six books that "provide more information about Islam and its history."
The list includes books by, predictably enough, John Esposito, Karen Armstrong, and Vali Nasr.
Here is a better booklist (scroll down past mine to see many worthy books by a variety of authors). And it's just for starters. Once you're done with those, contact me for more.
best part about NYT times is that it can be used at the bottom of my budgie's (Bert & Ernie)bird cage &
great for house breaking pups as well!
There's always the Qur'an, hadith collections, and Sunnah articles available free on the Internet. Putting Esposito and Armstrong on the top of the list tells me the NYT staff is ready for prayer mats.
Hard to believe Spencer, Warraq, Ye'or, and Bostom didn't make the list. Bostom, Warraq, and Spencer should be required reading at the military academies for the forseeable future. Ye'or is critical to understanding how small Muslim populations eventually came to dominate and exterminate the indigenous people of Eastern Christendom.
It's a crime against knowledge that Legacy of Jihad isn't used in every American university. I'd suggest Spencer's Mohammed but for the subtitle. Can't offend all the wannabe jihadis paying full out-of-state tuition.
"it can be used at the bottom of my budgies...birdcage."
-- from a posting above
What they used to say in Russia in praise of Pravda (goditsya na podtirku) could also be said about The New Duranty Times. One finds the paper "very absorbent." Or, with the poster above, one could use it, after a quick read, to line the bottom of your birdcage. Making that birdcage, indeed, a cage aux folles.
Robert, one of the first books I read on the topic was not on your list; M.J. Akbar's "The Shade of Swords". Have you read it? If so, any thoughts?
I am currently wading through "The Meaning of The Holy Qur'an" by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Amana Publications Tenth Edition. If you are familiar with this translation I would appreciate any comments you might have.
Old institutions and sorry academics cannot keep up with change.
I read another interesting book -- "Lightning out of Lebanon: Hezbollah terrorists on American soil" by Tom Diaz and Barbara Newman (2005). This book provides an informative history of the formation of Hezbollah as a terrorist group (back in Lebabon)...(it's not the standard dhimmi history one is apt to read from Islam's apologists.)
The text also demonstrates the criminal scams these terrorist groups employ so as to finance their terrorist operations in the United States (in this case taking over a pizza franchise, along with cigarette running). (Oh, and it's not that Lebs take out a *single* fraudulent identity -- or try to impersonate a *single* person -- oh no! -- these dudes employ multiple, multiple identities because of their ability to contrafeit -- one of these jerks required an indexed notebook to keep track of his multiple identities, so when people phoned he knew whom to impersonate). Anyway, the book is written in a lively, fast-paced form.
Not much of a surprise with the NY SLimes endorsing such garbage (much like their even-leftier cousins like SPindymedia do almost in lockstep)...after all, they still like to refer to long-discredited, kook-fringe socialist noam chomsky for info on how a capitalist country like America ticks.
That's known as "a really big clue" something's amiss.
Thanks for a REAL reputable reading list, Robert.
It figures that a rag like the NYT that specializes in half truths and sugar coating the awful truth would list the "works" of Esposito and Armstrong as must reads. They write in the same manner. I think JW"s list is a vast improvement.
The New York Times has its counterpart in Canada. It's the Toronto Star - unfortunately the largest circulation daily in Canada. I cannot believe the drivel and bias. Shameful, and these days, dangerous. They should be careful what they wish for. I wonder how they'll like it when the islamofascists take over and TELL them what to write.
makes one wonder if nyt gets large donations from the slamic organizations in america to help subdue and enslave americans!
One thing I’ve never been able to understand is how so many of the Jewish people (many of whom I know and respect greatly) can rise to the top of whatever profession they choose, be it law, or science, or finance, or art; and at the same time be so bad at basic survival instincts.
According to Time, all of you are persons of the year. Congratulations!

Damn, do i ever disagree with this statement!
I think the reason Jews are most hated around the world is because of their survival instinct!
hitler had them in ghettos and they not only survived they thrived, they couldnt be kept in the ghettos! Their will and desire to learn and teach not only their own but all those around them caused hitler and the nazis to hate them for their success and to blame the Jew for all their own weakness and failures!
The muslims do the same today, all the weakness ,illness and failures of the muslim is caused by the Jews!
If only the muslims could fulfill muhammads prophecy and subdue, enslave and slaughter all the Jews all of islams problems would be solved!
For the muslim the mere exsistence of the Jews living as free men not as dhimmis under control of the muslims proves muhammad a false demon possessed messenger and allah an imposter satanic diety!
I do strongly disagree with the statement
"Jews have no survival instinct"! The Jews have survived the onslaught and attempted genocide by many different peoples!
Now what the Jews may suffer from as i see it is "if its happening ,we deserve it" complex!
Thndrbang;
To clarify: 'So many' includes the editorial staff of the New York Times, several Democratic Senators, the forces within the Israeli government that felt the need to preceed high explosives with warning leaflets, and even a few of my in-laws.
'So many' does not constitute a critical mass. They ain't going anywhere.
A book not mentioned is one that first opened my eyes to the dangers of radical Islam, and actually Islam itself. "Islam and Terrorism" by Dr. Mark Gabriel (c.2002 Charisma House Publishers) left me slack-jawed at the realities of Islam as illuminated by Dr. Gabriel, an Egyptian who, by age 12, had memorized the entire Koran, eventually graduated from Al-Azhar University in Cairo and ended up as imam at a major mosque in Egypt. He eventually found Islam to be an empty religion and, after questioning the faith from his teaching position, was fired from the university and had the secret police called on him. His eventual conversion to Christianity and emigration to the U.S. is a story that needs to be read, along with his explanations of the main tenents of Islam.
I did want to complement, however, Robert's list. I have a number of his works and that of Daniel Pipes, Ibn Waraq, Serge Trifkovic and others. It has been an incredible learning curve for me, thanks to these exception scholars led by Robert himself.
Forgive me, that should have been "exceptional"
scholars!
