A day after European Commission humanitarian chief Louis Michel said he had secured both sides' commitment to observe a truce and resume peace talks, the Islamic movement chief called on Somalis to join the war against Ethiopian forces.
Not surprising.
The government said Wednesday it had killed "hundreds" of rival fighters and wounded hundreds while the Islamists said they had killed at least 70 enemy combatants in the deadly assaults. None of the figures could be independently confirmed.
"Our mujahedeens have killed 70 soldiers today ... the Islamic courts are winning the war against Ethiopian invasion," Sheikh Mohamoud Ibrahim Sulley, the secretary of the Islamists, told a press conference in Mogadishu.
At the same time, residents said an Ethiopian helicopter landed in Baidoa, the seat of government, about 250 kilometres (155 miles) northwest of the capital Mogadishu.
"I saw an Ethiopian-flagged military chopper, it collected some wounded soldiers from the airport," said Abdullahi Mohamed, who lives nearby.
"Mortar fire was still going on at night ... nothing has stopped," said Information Minister Ali Jama, adding that the Islamists were mobilising more fighters to widen a conflict that compounds the misery of nearly a million people affected by recent flooding.
"The fighting is still continuing and we dont know how things can be changed," said Hussein Ali, a Baidoa resident said.
Islamists chief Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys rallied Somalis to join the war against Ethiopian forces deployed to protect the government.
"All Somalis should join the war against Ethiopia," Aweys told HornAfrik radio, a day after he said the conflict was "a small incident."

OH NO! Bono, Bob, Madonna and Brangalina will never go for that! And what would Michael Moore think?
We need to start treating the muslim clerics as if they are the officers in an army against us. Unless they prove themselves to be with us - most of them preach hatred and call for jihad against us, or as in the case of the Somalians - against anyone who is not a muslim.
We only think that clerics like Al Sadr are a problem. What everyone is not seeing that is in our printed and other news daily - are most clerics who are the leaders of this call for muslims to kill non-muslims - or at least support it.

Amen to that. We need to make being a cleric as dangerous a profession as possible for them-these loudmouths incite violence everywhere while they themselves are holed up somewhere, safe from danger (a prime example would be the Taliban's mule-ah Omar). Zap as many of these "holies" as posible-it might give a guy some food for thought.
I guess Islamic jihadists just can't forget where Jews live for long, eh?

I live in a part of San Diego that is overrun with Somali immigrants.(legal and illegal) Right now they wage welfare jihad, public education jihad, amongst others. I wonder how long it will be before they decide to take up the REAL jihad, right here in my city. Only time will tell.

I wouldn't worry too much about real jihad just yet-they're quite passive when feeding at the trough of government goodies. It's the same here in the Caliphate of Minnesota-they have it made in the shade. If things repeat themselves at least you won't have to worry about getting a cab-provided you don't bring any alcohol with you.
s_sgt I agree- we should have good intel on who these imams are who are leading the terrorists and we should be locking every single one of them up OR annihilating them altogether- but we don't out of fear of reprisals. I remember way back in grammer school when the nun who taught us pointed out the Ethiopians fought the Italian Fascists with with everything they had including stones and sticks. I felt the admiration for them well up inside of. Some forty or so years later I still posess that same admiration. The Islamists can't lick the boots of the Ethiopians when it comes to spirit and courage. They are a blessed people. Hopefully, Christian Africans will support them against these Islamic thugs.

If they claim that there is no common motivation in their religion-obviously from the koran,why is it that 'foreign fighters' always go to fight in all these seeming islamic wars? There are 'foreighn fighters' in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Lebanon and Sudan.
Now the Islamic Courts are calling all Somalis to join in the battle as if it's patortic, however, when the battle is ovr, they'll make a difference between the Moslems and the infidels. The issue will shift from being Somalis to being a moslem.
I wish that the US and other western countries will use this opportunity. The failure or the win of Ethiopia speaks a lot about the future of these battles in the eastern Africa and the whole of Africa. It will either weaken or strenghthen the Islamic struggles against the west. Let no one make any mistake about it. The struggle with Islam is going to be a very long one. Any leader that wants to please everybody and be PC cannot fight it. As per the war, it's inevitable.
