The architect’s vision is of a 21st-century Alhambra, a place for prayer, education, debate and the celebration of Islamic culture.But the plan to build Europe’s biggest mosque beside the London 2012 Olympic Park is attracting opposition from the Muslim community.
The concern is not the building, but the activities of Tablighi Jamaat, the ultra-orthodox sect that is behind the huge mosque.
A petition against the scheme, organised by Muslims in the East London borough of Newham, attracted 2,500 signatures in only ten days and is continuing to draw support. It says that allowing Tablighi Jamaat to build the mosque would aggravate community tensions.
Ruth Kelly, the Communities and Local Government Secretary, who is currently redrawing the Government’s approach to engagement with the Muslim community, is aware of the East London petition. She has the power to subject the plans to a public inquiry.
The scheme for the mosque, drawn up by the award- winning architects, MYAA, envisages a complex containing an Islamic garden, school and prayer space for as many as 70,000 worshippers — 23 times greater than the capacity of Liverpool cathedral, Britain’s largest Christian place of worship.
Newham Council signed a memorandum of agreement in 2001 with the charity behind the scheme, the Anjuman-E- Islahul Muslimeen, which states it has “no objection in principle to . . . a major new, high-quality mosque”.
But there are mounting concerns about Tablighi Jamaat and its strict interpretation of Islam.
A leaked FBI memo, obtained by US news media in 2005, raised fears that al- Qaeda was using membership of Tablighi Jamaat “as cover . . . to network with other extremists in the US”.
A number of British terrorists have had associations with the organisation, including Richard Reid, the shoe bomber now in prison in the US. Mohammad Sidique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer, two of the July 7 bombers, had links with the large Tablighi Jamaat mosque in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.
The sect’s leading scholars encourage its followers to be aloof from politics and the secular world, but security agencies fear that its brand of orthodoxy provides a fertile recruiting ground for terrorists.
This is excellent. I'm saving my celebration boogie for when more of this takes place, along with some organized attempt within the Islamic world at dealing with the infidel-beheading passages of the quran.

Would it also show which one is the weaker, minority view of Islam and which is not?
Moderates, if they are indeed the majority and value their faith, need to realize they have to fight for their version of Islam, whether they like it or not. And as evidenced by this whole mosque-building situation, their adversaries aren't the non-Muslims.
The Tablighi Jamaat was founded by Muhammad Ilyas,
in the 1920s in Deoband, India.
They are the most dangerous species of Islamic organizations: they are two faced, presenting themselves as a "missionary"(lol) group to Western governments and carrying on with everyone from Hamas to Al-Qaeda.
They recieve hundreds of millions from Saudis and others. They go on to build these giant mosques WHICH THEY AND THEIR SAUDI BANKERS ENSURE ARE CONTROLLED BY RABID WAHHABI FANATICS.
It is vital that this mosquebuilding be stopped while it can be stopped.
Else it will be too late, everincreasing muslim votes will overwhelm all other principles and the calamitous vision of Eurabia will be a living reality.
I have a question: Are the posters on JW who are native citizens of Europe, and those who share their views, really so small a political constituency? Or is the issue a lack of a political organization or platform?
This is not excellent. How can we alert the masses to the creeping sharia in the west, if a plan to build a radical mosque is opposed by muslims in their taqiyya charm offence in an effort to present themselves as freedom-loving moderates? This would suggest to the general public that muslims are not a danger after all, and any concern about them is merely racist fear mongering.
Those were my very first thoughts as well. They're not as concernede about "community tensions" as they are about "community awareness".
The last thing they want is the masses to arise from their slumber.

They are not opposed to the building of the mosque,they just want a "piece of the action".

The only real purpose of such a large mosque is to conquer and take over the area in which it resides, creating a wholly owned Islamic Sharia state within a state. Far more than 70,000 Muslims are going to congregate around it. If approved, it can easily be finished before the Olympics begin, and I predict the locals start fleeing very soon after. I bet the Muslims will have some demands to make of the Olympic committee lest the Muslims decide to "get restless". Moreover, consider the symbolic location near the Queen's castle, a clear message that the British better behave.
If master plans like this don't chill our friends in Britain to their core, they should. An abomination such as this that only garnered 2500 signatures in 10 days DOES NOT give me any comfort in the hearing, however the article attempts to portray it.
I hope every Londoner, and ever Briton aware of this gargantuan escapade fights, and violently if necessary, to prevent its fruition.
The Muslims clearly know full well that this period right now is the quiet before the storm -- if quiet it can be called -- and they are doing everything that money can buy to accomplish footholds, and infiltrate thoroughly. A super mosque? What the hell is wrong with the politicians over in that area? Thank God some relatively normal Muslims are shooting this idea down-otherwise, you'll have a Muslim Sophia Hagia right in London. What a convenient excuse THAT would be for Muslim "pilgrims" to show up in droves in Britain. Aren't there any zoning laws against something like that? I'd sure like to see a Christian group try for something like that in cesspoolia-the heads would be flying off with record speed. Incredible!
Remember this war we are fighting is a propaganda war. Radical mosques, especially those connected to terrorism, hurt the image of muslims terribly. We need to support this until the image is so bad, that the public reaches a point of PC critical mass where no more tolerance can be alloted, and the public takes political action to reverse the trend. This anti-mosque petition by muslims helps to delay that point of critial mass. Not good. Time is of the essence.

Muslims are living on borrowed time in the West. There's no way that they can, or ever would stop the trajectory of their shock troops of Islam. They believe this is the way for Islam to win. And why not? It's worked for 1400 years against their other victims. But we are different.
Muslims can deny Islam's centrality to the moon, but our social credulity is vexed to the breaking point, and sooner or later we'll choose to survive over tolerating their perpetual arrogance.
I think their greatest blunder will simply come from misreading our responses, as they are clearly doing now. Has anyone noticed the up tempo of their Jihadi activities and their newly trenchant attitude? Has anyone read the analysis of the leading Arab "intellectuals" and the glee they are expressing at the "failure of America" as they read it in the so called Iraq Study Group Report? Let them hang themselves with their limitless arrogance and self delusion. They have no way of sensing our continued forebearance is a sign of our greatness as a people, not our weakness as a people. They have no intellectual real estate to comprehend our minds -- keep in mind -- as difficult as it is for us to comprehend them, their petrified mindsets make it IMPOSSIBLE for them to understand us.

Nearly every achievement of Islamic societies, artistic, scientific, technological, intelllectual, etc., has, in reality, been the achievement of the dhimmi remnants of previous cultures. I wonder how far Islam would get if non-Islamic cultures, while those cultures are still in a position of strength, relative to the historical progression of Jihad expansion and dhimmitude, simply refused cooperation with them. In other words - to be blunt, don't accept their money and don't do business with them. A concerted economic boycott of Islamic activity might very well cause their efforts to collapse like a house of cards.
On a more positive note, I agree with Robert that the Muslims resisting the project at least, should be commended for their efforts. Any signs of the potential for the emergence of an Islam, or at least the emergence of something new from what used to be Islam, that is peaceable and moderate, deserves at least our sympathy, if not our support.
I'm surprised they want to build a monstrous complex like this--I figured they were waiting until they could take over St. Paul's Cathedral and just renovate it like they did to Hagia Sophia.
I think they should be allowed to build it. The sooner something that apparent gets in front of the commoners, perhaps they will finally wake up and demand to take back their country. When you clearly see a pimple, that's when it can be treated.
As to building mosques - who wants to hear the call to prayers through loudspeakers - fr. a tower 5 TIMES A DAY. In the middle of the night when one is trying to sleep. And at dawn before reg. Western waking hrs.
This call to prayers is so unmelodic anyway - but to hear it EVERY SINGLE DAY - 7 days a week. It's not even like the Catholic church bells - The bells are only a few mins. at at time, & at least they are musical. Call to prayers are so greating, BAH!
