CAIRO (AFP) - Islam bars women from becoming head of state, Egypt's top Muslim cleric or mufti, Sheikh Ali Gomaa, ruled in an official fatwa or religious edict published.
"Under Islamic sharia (religious law), a woman cannot be head of state because it is one of the duties of the position to lead Muslims in prayer and that role can only be carried out by men," said the fatwa carried by leading state daily Al-Ahram.
"If by political rights, we mean the right to vote, stand as candidate or assume public office, then the sharia has no objection to women enjoying them, but a woman cannot serve as head of state.
"Women can stand as candidates for parliament or the consultative council, in so far as they can reconcile their duties with the rights that their husbands and children have over them."
But the mufti said that women's conduct of their political rights must not infringe "the ethical laws of Islam" and that they should not therefore "take off the headscarf, deck themselves in fine clothes or be alone with men who are not their husbands or close relatives."
Egypt was the first Arab country to give women the franchise in 1956.
But in a country where the Muslim Brotherhood is the main opposition group, social pressures still limit women's political role.

This would condemn almost every woman in America, who at one time or another has certainly been "alone" with someone not a husband or a close relative. Why, my mother has occasionally been alone in the house when the meter-reader, the electrician, the plumber have all come a-calling. So have carpenters working on an addition. Shall I look at her askance? Do you think I should?
I wonder what happens if Muslim women refuse to open the door to the meter-reader. Will they refuse to be examined, ever, by any male doctor, or step in to a room with a male doctor or nurse or X-ray technician or blood-taker or any number of others, if there is no one else present? That can run into money. Is it possible that this attitude will be indulged? That expensive allowances will be made, in an Infidel country, for Muslims? If they insist on other medical personnel being present, and that raises the cost of the medical bills that are then paid by insurance, it will be all of us, all of the non-Muslims, who will through our own raised premiums be paying for such stuff. Should we? I don't want to. I object.
How is this even news? These are the same people who ride with their goats in the front seat of their cars while their wives sit in the back.
Can't become President? You first have to be treated like a human before that can be considered.

My thoughts exactly as I was reading the article.
"In so far that they reconcile their duties with the rights that their husbands and children have OVER THEM." Don't get on my case. I understand mothers have duties as well as fathers and kids have duties to the family. But what this simple minded ignoramus mufti is saying,is if you're a woman you can't really run for parliament or consultative council. What's next on the agenda,women banned from urinating in toilets? That's my take.

It absolutely is a true story; it happened in Saudi Arabia a few years ago and fifteen girls burned to death. They were fleeing the burning school and the religious police made them go back inside because they were not veiled. As a result, they burned to death. Females are expendable in islamic cesspools; camels are more valuable than women.

First of all Hillary will get a huge boost from Muslim voters. Her politics are the same as her husbands and we all know what favorites they play with the Islamic world.

We all know that Clinton pushed the US into an illegal war without Congressional approval and forced the UN to violate its own charter by invading Yugoslavia. This was all done on behalf of Islamic terrorists the KLA/UCK.
Don't worry about Hillary ever standing up to an Islamic aggressor, because quite simply she won't. She will finish her husbands job and partition Yugoslavia, and most likely on Christmas as that day didn't stop the bombing, but we can't bomb Iraq during Ramadan.
