LONDON (Reuters) - An Islamist cell tried to carry out suicide bombings on London's transport system just two weeks after attacks that killed 52 people and wounded about 700, a prosecutor said on Monday.
The "extremist Muslim plot" was not a hastily arranged copycat scheme but a long-planned operation, chief prosecutor Nigel Sweeney said as six British men went on trial over the failed attacks of July 21, 2005.
He said the attackers aimed to cause maximum injury by detonating home-made bombs packed with metal, which they carried in rucksacks onto the public transport system.
"It was simply the good fortune of the traveling public that they were spared," Sweeney told the court.
The targets -- three underground trains and a bus -- echoed those in the deadly attacks by four young British Muslims who blew themselves up in London two weeks earlier, on July 7, 2005.
The failed second set of attacks caused panic and triggered a huge manhunt, leaving Londoners unclear if they were a botched and quickly assembled attempt to imitate the original carnage.
But Sweeney told the high-security Woolwich Crown Court: "The evidence in this case shows that this conspiracy had been in existence long before the events of July 7."
The six men are all originally from Africa and in their 20s.
Sweeney said the 9th-floor flat of defendant Yassin Hassin Omar in north London was the bomb-making factory. The detonator was triacetone triperoxide (TATP) and the main charge was held in buckets surrounded by screws, tacks, washers and nuts.
"The purpose is, of course, to increase fragmentation when the bomb explodes and maximize the possibility of injury, fatal or otherwise, to those in the vicinity," Sweeney told the court.
FAILED TO EXPLODE
Sweeney said the 5 kg (11 lb) bombs were made of hydrogen peroxide, nail varnish and flour used to make chapatis, or unleavened bread. They were carried in rucksacks with wires connected to the detonators hidden under clothing.
He said that between May 9 and July 5, the group bought 442 liters of hydrogen peroxide. One supplier sold them 218 liters, nearly half of its total sales of the chemical in that period.
Sweeney said four of the defendants successfully fired their TATP detonators but the main charge failed to explode, possibly because the proportion of hydrogen peroxide was not quite right.
TATP is an explosive chemical which can be made from commonly available household products. Nicknamed "Mother of Satan," it is highly volatile and liable to explode prematurely if subjected to friction, impact or change of temperature.
All the main suspects on trial were apprehended just over a week after the failed attacks.
Muktah Said Ibrahim, Manfo Kwaku Asiedu, Hussein Osman, Yassin Hassin Omar, Ramzi Mohammed and Adel Yahya are all charged with conspiracy to murder. They deny the charges.
The prosecutor said Osman had told police after being arrested in Italy that the bombings were a deliberate hoax to make a political point. Sweeney rejected the "hoax" defense.
Sweeney said Mohammed was seen trying to set off his bomb facing a woman with a pushchair and was wearing a top with New York on it, "no doubt connected with the events of 9/11."
He said home-made films featuring images of beheadings of Western hostages and other attacks, including those on September 11 in New York, were found in two of the defendants' flats.
They are also accused of "conspiracy to cause explosions likely to endanger life or cause serious injury to property."

In the season premire last night of the show 24, there is a scene where the FBI shows up at a fictional Muslim rights organization and requests their employee records in an attempt to foil an on-going series of terrorist acts. The US President's sister who happens to be balack and happens to be the organization's attorney and love interest of the organization's leader. She calls the US President, her brother, and complains about the FBI and says that their actions are "ethnic profiling". Then when the warrant is presented, she decides it is a good idea to obstruct justice by electronically shreading the employee records.
The whole thing reminds one about the discussions here, after the flying imam controversey and CAIR's attempt to raise racial profiling. Herein it was observed that being Muslim is not a racial issue. It is a religon and a way of life, without race or border. Hopefully, 24 will get it right tonight and not pander to the racial profiling group, rather than enable it.
Just one thing worries me about the trial so far, they explained in court in too much detail why the bombs failed to explode.

Yes I am glad they failed but the media has failed because they just adding more fuel to fire, ok the ingredients failed but I guess it does not need much tweaking.

The issue isn’t whether they were technically savvy enough to create a bomb that explodes. The issue is whether they planned to execute attacks that were aimed at killing or causing destruction to property.
The fact that they can be proven to have had contact with a weapon designed to do such things is proof enough of their intentions in my book. The reams of other evidence and CCTV footage is just icing on the cake.
The fact that they were unlucky enough to create bombs without the required amounts of peroxide is of no matter when you take into account the planning and testing of their explosives that took places in the weeks or months prior to their attempt.
Anyway these low life civvies trying to create TATP were not chemists. TATP is also described as the "Mother of Satan" because it is considered to be more unstable than nitroglycerin.

.. even before that, "they" should not be allowed in. "Get Out" should be the only option for those who have wormed into US terriroris.
The only way round it is have schools in the UK put more effort in Bible teachings and old school assemblies because Atheist or scientific views will not change much as that is something that passes by without effect. If they hear who and what God sounds to us as a more loving figure not a peaceful one because peace can mean under a certain condition like peace in a prison then maybe for one it may bring some respect back to society because I hear that being an atheist is worse than being a believer of another sort in most cultures anyway. We should not sweep God out of the human mind it's part of our make up, it can help understand that maybe other things are involved in our existence which leads to wanting to know more even if the path like 20 years into the future makes you want to prove what God is as being wrong. But by totally being PC about it and over denying faith and the world's largest and best selling book the Bible then society fragments so much that people within the world feel lost. But on the other hand instead of denying the Bible for the sake of offence we should say look, this is what we believe too and it may bring all these other cultures who seem mostly religious anyway to understand where the West came to be today way we have so many Churches and how the Bible and the law of the land have had a great influence. I guess more can be said about this but the point is I feel the West is losing it's identity and everyone is becoming so fragmented that everyone has lost purpose so we end up getting Muslims making up the law for us. It's a vicious cycle and I don't think it can be stopped and is not meant to be, prophecy says so and I believe that this is just one cog of many leading up to it all. Some people claim religion causes more harm than good, but communism and dictatorships have not done so well either. I think we need to go back to out routes otherwise we end up going back to the times of the crusades, then they will look back saying 'our fault'...

What is Capital Crime and what is Capital Punishment ? If it is what it is, why do you need to impose a legal defendant ? They want death; give it to them. Call it corporate euthanasia.

I have to really respect a true atheist as it takes a tremendous amount of faith to believe in absolute nothingness. However, most professing atheists are really agnostics; they believe there is something out there, they just dont know what "It" is, or what to call it.

Hi Mert just to clarify as someone else has, that this going to hell is not as black and white as it all seems and Christians should go deeper to understanding the procedure than saying 'you go to hell'. For a start God will judge Christians for what they have done right and he will judge non-believers for what they have done wrong. A righteous man even by not knowing Christ or anything of religion will be judged fairly too and does not have automatic Hell it will be like a court case. God is just saying to be on the safe side and believe and do right rather than face a possibility of going to hell. It's not like some religions where they interpret kill the infidel on earth as well as giving them a place in hell. That is not exactly fair and forcing conversion is not what the Bible Jesus would want, he emphasised on choosing your way to have a strong faith whilst telling you of the consequences but warned he had the power to decided your heavenly fate as man judged him on earth. He incouraged the strength of faith to have in his deciples, he kept them as brothers even if they would doubt or were a bit slow but he never forced it just taught it.
