This essay is an excerpt of Henryk M. Broder's book "Hurra, Wir Kapitulieren," ("Hurray! We're Capitulating") published by Wolf Jobst Siedler Verlag in 2006. The book spent a number of weeks atop the DER SPIEGEL bestseller list.

The controversy over the 12 Muhammad cartoons that were published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in September 2005 and led to worldwide protests and unrest among Muslims was merely a taste of what is to come, a dress rehearsal for the kinds of disputes Europe can expect to face in the future if it does not rethink its current policy of appeasement. As was the case in the 1930s, when Czechoslovakia was sacrificed in the interest of peace under the Munich Agreement -- a move that ultimately did nothing to prevent World War II -- Europeans today also believe that an adversary, seemingly invincible due to a preference for death over life, can be mollified by good behavior, concessions and submission.
"The West should desist from engaging in all provocations that produce feelings of debasement and humiliation," says psychoanalyst Horst-Eberhard Richter. "We should show greater respect for the cultural identity of Muslim countries. ... For Muslims, it is important to be recognized and respected as equals." In Richter's view, what the Muslims need is "a partnership of equals."And more to the point, why don't they?
But Richter neglects to describe what this partnership might look like. Does achieving such equality mean that we should set up separate sections for women on buses, as is the custom in Saudi Arabia? Should the marrying age for girls be reduced to 12, as is the case in Iran? And should death by stoning be our punishment for adultery, as Shariah law demands? What else could the West do to show its respect for the cultural identity of Islamic countries? Would it be sufficient to allow Horst-Eberhard Richter to decide whether, for example, a wet T-shirt contest in a German city rises to a level of criminal provocation that could cause the Muslim faithful in Hyderabad to feel debased and humiliated?
The discussion over which provocations WE should put an end to so that THEY do not feel upset inexorably leads to the realm of the absurd.
Should devout Jews be entitled to demand that non-Jews give up pork? And should they have the power to impose sanctions if their demands are not met? Can a Hindu in India run amok because the Dutch do not view cows as sacred beings?
"Nowadays acts of terrorism are not committed for their own sake, but in the name of an ideology one could call Nazi-Islamism," Romanian-American author Norman Manea told the German daily Die Welt in March 2004. The only difference, in Manea's view, is "that this ideology invokes a religion, whereas the Nazis were mythical without being religious." Manea believes that what he calls a "World War III" has already begun. "The Europeans are putting off the recognition -- as they did in the 1930s -- of the tremendous tragedy that awaits them and that has, in fact, already arrived."

Fine and dandy except for one problem-it takes two to form a partnership. Not only that, the West might be seeking equality but its "partner" in this exercise in futility is seeking superiority-nothing else will do for the master race mentality of Islam. Richter doesn't get it and the big problem is that he has far too much company.
Now the appeasement monkeys can wake up, blame it all on "western values" and then go back to sleep ...

Great article, but one correction: "The Americans" did not abandon their Danish allies. The State Department arabists and the US media dhimma chose to appease the savages, but "the Americans" did no such thing.

The Americans and other Infidels should not be thinking of ways to avoid understanding the clear menace of the ideology of Islam, or to listen to this psychtherapist who thinks Infidels must engage in a folie a deux with Muslims and accept their view of Islam so as not to hurt their feelings and their self-esteem (World Politics as Self-Esteem Studies -- my, it has a nice grant-getting sound to it, doesn't i?).
No, the way to proceed is quite thye opposite. This is not a problem, pace Blair, that will last a generation, or pace Cheney, that will last 20-30 years. It has no sell-by date. It will last as long as Islam. But it is a manageable problem, if at this stage enough of the Infidels properly inform themselves and understand Jihad as a central duty imposed on Muslims by Islam, and a duty that can be perofrmed at times collectively and at times individuallly, and that can be furthered not only by military means but by other means as well.
If one believes that it is important to keep Muslims off-balance, to put them on the defensive, and never to have their taqiyya-and-tu-quoque acquiesced in, nor their dreams of domination, spelled out in the Qur'an and Sunnah, allowed to continue without comment, as if we had all agreed never to mention these things in order not to arouse Muslim anger (what nonsense), then the best course of action is to show that one knows a lot, too much from the Muslim point of view, and to constantly bring forth the doctrines, and the history, of Islam that cannot be defended or explained away. And if, furthermore, weaknesses within the Camp of Islam are exploited (exploited sometimes merely by the act of doing nothing -- the easiest way to proceed when the working ouf pre-existing conditions will lead to the result you wish), that will ease the already terrible burden on Infidels. Finally, a clear goal should be set by Infidels, and this is what I suggest that goal should be:
The creation of conditions in the states where Islam dominates and Muslims rule, such that Muslims themselves will be treated, as much as possible, at arm's length, sellers of oil and gas but nothing more, not models, not friends, not "part of the West" (why, if you listen to Tariq Ramadan it seems that Islam practically created Western civilization), but a hostile force that can be contained within the West, and can have pressure put on it, by Muslims themselves, if such conditions in the Dar al-Islam forces them to confront the political, economic, social, moral, and intellectual failures of their own societies, and further are forced to make the connection between those failures and Islam itself, its teachings, its attitudes, its atmospherics.
That is the best way. It is, I think, the only realistic way. If you agree, then you may wish to help me to convince others.

You are a learned man and I have deep respect for your insight but I must strongly disagree if you think this can be "contained" indefinitely.
The longer this situation remains the stronger they will get and the weaker we will become.
If we, the forces of light in the world do not move to neutralise the threat we will be consummed.
This war will last till Judgement Day, or the extinction of Islam or Western civilisation.
We can manage it though, and even come to respect each other, if we explain to Muslims that their presence among us, is causing harm to our way of life, and eventually it will cause harm to their way of life. This will happen sooner or later, when appeasement gives way to aggression. It is far better for all, if we live in separate houses, then contunue in this forced cohabition - a macarbe social engineering project forced on Western people, by an unthinking political elite, which in the end will lead to a war of unimaginable brutality.
Time is not on our side, and by the same measure, it is not on Muslim's side as well, for in the end, only force of the global kind, will resolve such issues.

I fear the piece in Der Spiegel is right. Forget the demographics, the war between Europe and Islam will start somewhere in the next 2 years. Perhaps even this April when the new French president is chosen. Or a country that has nothing to do with Iraq is bombed, like Sweden. Or at the moment when the Serb province of Kosovo is finally independent this summer and many other provinces with muslim-majorities get the same idea.
In short, there are plenty of opportunities for civil strife. Too much peace can bear.

Why do you assume that, in the long run, there is any distinction between "Islamism" and "Islam"? Surely, you must be aware of the fact that second and third generation Muslims in Europe are more radical (and more "Islamist") than their parents or grandparents. So, today's "Muslim" is tomorrow's "Islamist" and you are talking about what amounts to a distinction without a difference. Check out "sudden Jihad syndrome" for an example of why there is no long-run "Islam" there is only long-run "Islamism" and I personally am simply not willing to run any risk of encountering "sudden Jihad syndrome" here in the US. I really don't understand why you, or anyone else, would act to increase your chances of dying at the hands of a jihadi, but by your actions and mentality, you are objectively aiding "Islamism" by failing to understand how it is identical to "Islam" in any long-term scenario you care to construct.
If I could speculate about the cause of the collapsing of the distinction of "Islam" and "Islamism" over the long run, it's the fact that while some of these Muslims emigrating to the West are intelligent, they aren't quite intelligent enough to really "matter" in the Western world. It's partially not their fault because Islam lacks even a single tool to help individuals acclimate themselves to modern Western thought. Islamism gives them something that says they are the greatest thing since sliced bread and naturally they use it as a crutch. A crutch that ultimately may kill them, but allegedly awards them 72 virgins in compensation.

It's interesting to know that "people" are amused by the biggest threat America, Europe, and the rest of the free world have ever faced. I'm tickled to death that these idiots are spared the anxiety and distress that we experience as we debate the subtle differences or distinct similarities between "Islamism and Islam." Islamism and islam are one and the same; some muslims overtly display their "islamism" and some conceal it. All devout muslims believe whatever their radical clerics tell them, and most muslims are able, willing, and ready to join the jihad at the behest of their beloved, holy imam.
Those who laugh at sites like this because they think they "get it" and we don't are in for a rude awakening. I'm sure glad I'm not one of them.

The lobby for our destruction seems almost infinite at times, but we have to hope its really paper thin.
Hugh is exactly right about what we, as individuals and a society as a whole, need to be doing. Only when Muslims are confronted on the street level, on a daily basis, with undeniable facts, will the tide begin to turn.
Confrontation is probably even too strong of a word. Right now in America we don't need to confront, not yet at least, thank God.
I have found that confrontation isn't needed. Purely the dropping of some intimate knowledge of Islam, either in a group of mixed Infidels and Muslims, or to an individual Muslim, is enough to get even the most "moderate" Muslim's head spinning, and put on the defensive. Every time I've done this, they've countered with either nothing at all but outright denials and assertions or one of the many flimsy defenses we've seen so often on this website.
This MUST be done, and I suggest to ALL to start practicing and learning how to do it, immediately. The more you do, the better you will become, the better you will be able to overcome any fears of being lashed out at, called a racist or bigot, etc.
I first started learning the ugly truth about Islam from Jihadwatch while I was living in Istanbul. Being one not to shut my mouth much about things I don't like, I decided I needed to go elsewhere before I said the wrong thing to the wrong person.
My next stop for a year was in Korea. Not many Muslims to put on the defensive there. Then when I finally got back to the States my education began....my education in putting the Muslims in America and elsewhere on the defensive, because I understood it needed to be done.
Unfortunately my first experience was at one of these famed "resident scholar" affairs at a local boarding school, in which the celebrity for the week was the female ex-president of Pakistan, a Mrs. Benadir Bhutto.
Hugh knows these affairs well, with all the unwarranted adoration and respect, the complete avoidance of any uncomfortable and difficult situations for the honored guest.
To make a long story short, I was shocked to see first hand, after reading about it for almost two years, the daawa, the unabashed promotion of that mythic "religion of peace" without any hint, not even a nod, towards Islam's deficiencies or the horrible misdeeds and example of Muhammed.
Partly due to the atmosphere, the questions coming mainly from students, the time limit, my own stage fright and the utter shock at seeing and hearing a woman tell these young female students that "there is no religion more respectful to women than Islam," I didn't get my questions in. I was nervous to rock the smooth-sailing boat that was the entire affair. I feared my anger or nervousness may get in the way of whatever message I might get acroos to the crowd. I've got to admit I felt horrible later that I didn't take the few chances I had to put her on the defensive. Shame shame shame. But I vowed never again.
It takes practice, and and clear, solid repretoire of facts and various ways to present those facts to the right people at the right moment. Practice, practice, practice. You will help change the world in ten minutes here and there, I have no doubt about that.
Since then I've only come across two other Muslims, and I took the five minutes I had a made them count. One was a gas station clerk in Gainesville, VA with a shiny sports car sitting ourside. I was nothing but nice and politely questioned why he was Muslim. He was a Paki, and I knew why he was Muslim better than he did, but asking with naive wonder is a great way to engage. "Because that's what we are," he said. After a minute or two of asking him why he followed such a nasty religion, why he worshipped such a disgusting man as Muhammed, all politely and in a matter-of-fact manner, he quickly retreated into repeating assertions and becoming defensive. Looking back now, I can see the moment in which his Islamic upbringing kicked in and he suddenly saw me as an infidel, a dangerous, evil kafir attempting to disparage Islam, to convert him, to temp him to the dark side that is Infidel skepticism and critical thought not wholly loyal to Islam and Muhammed. I was suddenly dangerous in his eyes, an Infidel he's been told about since he was little, an Infidel who will temp him with all sorts of logic and reason into the Great Sin of disbelief, or Apostasy. He surely knows what happens to apostates in Pakistan. It was then that he began to question me, who I was, where I was from.
I drew the line there. When they begin to try and question YOUR credentials as an American, as a Brit, as a Frenchman, you have every damn right to let them know who, and what ideology, what religion is being interrogated here and now. I became not so much angry as sternly serious with him and let him know I was a Virginian, that this was my home, my country and that soon Virginia and America will NOT be a good place for Muslims.
I doubt he believed me, or even had a second thought on the matter....no no, he had a nice cell phone to make use of, and a shiny new sports car to ride around in later that day. No, probably not a thought about Infidels and all that the Infidel world has given him.
One last word, as this has gotten long, but there is a silent majority in the Infidel world. I am now travelling again, and have been pleasantly surprised to find that Infidels are fed up, particulary the Anglo-Americans. And when I talk about Islam, or confront a travelling Muslim in front of other infidels I find I've got far more support, silent and vocal, than I imagined was out there.
Get in the game everyone. Start practicising, come back here for advice if you need it. Hugh has plenty to give out.
And the best way to thank Robert and Hugh and the others here at JW for all their courage, efforts, and advice is to use it, to use it immediately.
That's what they want us to do with all this.
I still maintain that the strongest weapon in our arsenal is to use Islam's violent teachings against it (thereby destroying its credibility forever hence) and no Islamic teachings could be more vital to demolishing the House of Al-lah than Islam's teaching and practice of first-degree murder per orders of Muhammad in the Kuran.
Most people I know have started to comprehend the homicidal component of Islamic ideology and are reacting against it strongly.
The most important thing for all of us to do is KEEP HAMMERING AWAY THE MESSAGE that ISLAM TEACHES FIRST DEGREE MURDER!
Tell everyone you know and even people you DON'T know. (I hesitate to advocate purchasing a Kuran, but having one on hand can be useful as you can whip it out and open it to a useful passage to show skeptics and prove our point that Islam teaches first-degree murder).

One thing we have to fight at every turn is loss of the right of free speech. This is the cornerstone of freedom and liberty. When that is gone, Big Brother is finally in charge. Seems like England is plagued with many Big-Brother wannnabes. We have got them too, and they are now in charge.

Our best experts on Islam such as Robert and Hugh are virtually never published in the main stream media, however CAIR has no trouble getting column space for CAIR propagandists, and of course they never publish anything critical. I do not think the case of the Mosque taping ever made the news here in the US, but I could be wrong. Anyway the only place I saw it was here and on other websites.
The Saudis and the Gulf states pump a lot of money here to squash criticism of Islam, through CAIR and many other organizations, and legal finagling with our legal system and our government (particularly the State Department) on a grand scale.
It has been a long time since our nations had their revolutions. Till lately, our governments served us more or less well. What people like Richter constantly get confused is equal human rights and equal cultural rights. Muslims have equal human rights, not the right to practise 'cultural rights' that restrict the human rights of others. I also don't want other cultures to restrict my human rights with their cultural practices. Why can't people see the obvious difference?

The 'linksgutmenschen' in germany are the left wing 'do gooders', roughly what we may call the 'bleeding hearts' over here. Of course, they actually do more harm than good and it's all a bit self indulgent and dishonest. Perhaps 'feel gooders' would be a better description. I'm not even sure if 'left' is a totally accurate term for them (that's another debate), but you know the type.
I believe in Norway they refer to them as 'snillingere' (anyone from Norway of Germany please correct me here).
