WASHINGTON -- The Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF) has announced the imminent release of new computer software, Mujahideen Secret, to further jihadist outreach to the world.The Middle East Media Research Institute reports that according to the advertisement for the software, it is "the first Islamic computer program for secure exchange [of information] on the Internet," and it provides users with "the five best encryption algorithms, and with symmetrical encryption keys [256 bit], asymmetrical encryption keys [2,048 bit], and data compression [tools]."
An announcement by the GIMF, an Al Qaeda mouthpiece, was recently posted on several jihadist forums in which the group claims to present information to both jihadis and "the Western peoples." The message, written by Ahmad Al Hatheq Bin Allah, argues that the Internet serves as the best alternative to broadcast television for Muslims to execute a "kind of jihad" involving preaching and information dissemination. According to Bin Allah's announcement, since the Western media obfuscates "facts," it is incumbent upon Muslims to join Western Internet forums, to portray the truth convincingly through visual or oral arguments, especially as it concerns Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, and Chechnya.
With successfully engaging debate, Bin Allah claims the American people will place pressure upon the US government, "the guardian of terrorism and its promotion," to reverse its Middle East foreign policy. Otherwise, warned Bin Allah - echoing the words of Osama Bin Laden number two Ayman Al Zawahiri - the American people themselves will be to blame for attacks brought upon them.
How long will it be that this new jihadi program will get "discovered" by the anti-jihadi fighting forces, who also make use of the help of code breakers.(?)

I have been sorting out 30 years of old National Geographics, it's sort of funny they have a picture of a new nuclear reactor in Pakistan p. 683 May 1981 "while a sole nuclear power plant (below) provides electricity for Karachi, the country's arms policy remains an international question mark. I argued in a post last year that this is exactly the sort of specialized technological service that should be used in anti-jihadi cells, and outlined a large-scale strategy to counteract the growth of jihadist cells by developing a quiet "neighborhood watch" of small groups of eyes and ears (and voice and visual recording equipment, etc.) keeping tabs on "persons of interest" and funnelling useful information to our enforcement agencies. They would need to communicate securely, though this would not be as sensitive an issue as for the jihadis themselves.
It is useful if the jihadists use a uniform tool -- I hope they adopt this across the board. Someone should get ahold of it and do some reverse engineering, shouldn't be hard.
Most good encryption techniques won't be broken easily simply by knowing the algorithms. The RSA algoritm, for example, is public information, but nobody would waste their time today trying to crack one instance of its use. The same is probably true of the systems this software uses. However, there are many benefits to knowing exactly how encryption schemes are implemented.
For one, it is possible to look for fingerprints. Does the encryption or the software that implements it leave a detectable mark on the data? If so it is possible to sniff out this code and track it's use. In the case of jihadis just having this information is almost as valuable as outright decoding. (This is why I hope they adopt this software across the board!)
Key generation is also a big issue, for which reverse engineering might be helpful. If you know exactly how the keys are generated, it is sometimes possible to simply guess the key. RSA, for example, is based on products of large primes. Hard to crack from scratch, but if you have an idea of how the particular primes are chosen (it's not easy to make 50 digit prime numbers -- try it some day!) then you're on your way to cracking it.
Also, one can keep track of the distribution of the software. One can distribute counterfeit versions of it with back doors in the cipher. One can also use virus trojan horse strategies to sniff instances of the program out (and then deal with them) on networks. Lots of things you can do once you know what they're using, even without being able to crack the code.
They might as well tell all the terror cell members to wear bright red armbands with a microchip broadcasting a radio signal saying "I'm a Jihadi". This is good news as far as I'm concerned.

If the government wasn't so wussy about following laws when dealing with these clowns, they would have backdoors installed on their computers to allow full access at any time they wanted. As is, they have to wait until they capture a computer with this program to get a hold of it.
