In October, an Islamic scholar from South Africa was denied entry at San Francisco International Airport. A month later, six imams were taken off a US Airways flight from Minneapolis to Phoenix after a passenger reported overhearing them criticize the U.S. war in Iraq.

Once in the holding facility, Shehadeh said he was stripped of his shoes, jacket and prescribed heart medicine and locked in a cell with about 25 other detainees. There was one toilet in the middle of the room, and access to a telephone was extremely limited, he said.
On Sunday, he was released and sent back to Frankfurt on the same charter airline.

What is really outrageous about this story is the fact that he was not denied boarding in Frankfurt. Our government certainly has the capability of doing this kind of filtering in major airports (Frankfurt is a major European hub) across the world. If this guy was a terror suspect he should not have been allowed aboard. If he was innocent, being turned away at the gate would have been a relatively minor inconvenience.

I have not thought about the Hanfstaengel story for a long time. He is mentioned (along with son Egon) by John Toland as an important influence in Toland's 1976 excellent biography of Hitler. Toland mentions the Hanfstaengel defection, which I recalled from memory in the comment above. However, I just read a Wiki comment that Hanfstaengel went to Switzerland in 1937. I distinctly remember Toland mentioning the prearranged signal re defection that Egon got from his father in 1937 and that they went to France and then to the US. (I think Egon became a US Army pilot.) However, the Wiki data is somewhat different than what I recall from Toland.

Profiling on the basis of religion, politics, etc is trying to walk on quicksand. Log on to This Forum and you will find thousands (Catholics, Christians, Muslims, mostly right wingers and a few Euroleftists) that would love to be able to profile on the basis of religion...however the religion they would exclude (from public office and the U.S.) are Jews.
Israel has the answer, I guess you haven't heard how Israel handles the problem, instead of profiling on the basis of religion, they profile behavior. (and how does one tell what religion a person has, especially an American convert, black or white).
Most Americans are woefully ignorant of peoples and cultures outside of the Anglo Saxon community, and think that Sikhs or even Hindus are muslims, even Mexicans..anyone with a dark skin.
The Israeli methodology of teaching screeners to profile behavior is the most efficasious, but time consuming and expensive, America lacks patience and is not willing to expend money for anything other than personal desires.
But behavioral profiling is the best way to catch a Jihadi..look at the shoe bomber, look at John Walker Lindh, look at Jose Padilla, look at, Todd Ismail Royer, look Keith Ellison, look at any black muslim convert.. and tell me how can you tell if they are muslim..if they don't declare their religion and if they shave their beard? You can't. Religious profiling doesn't work, and it has the unsavory possibility of unintended adverse consequences.. and can easily be used, in the future, against it's advocates.
Regardless, so long as the U.S. is a constitutional democracy.. it will be impossible to isolate this or that "religion" for screening, one solution is to delegitimize Islam as a religion, and reclassify it as an ideology disguised as a religion (the five pillars is the religious part of Islam).
