The head of MI5 told Labour MPs the day before London’s 7 July bombings that there was no evidence of an imminent attack in Britain, it emerged today.Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller gave the assurance at a private meeting of Labour whips at the Commons less than 24 hours before four explosions killed 52 people on Tube trains and a No 30 bus.
She also reportedly said that the security situation was under control.
Although the revelation that the security services were caught unawares by the attack is no surprise, the MI5 director general’s apparent confidence will add to pressure on the security service over its failure to prevent the bombings.
Details about how much MI5 knew about the bombers’ ringleader, Mohammad Sidique Khan, and fellow bomber Shehzad Tanweer, which cannot be disclosed at the moment for legal reasons, are expected to be made public in the next two months.
It is already known that officers had listened in to conversations involving the pair, although neither man had been identified prior to the bombings because investigations had focused on others who were thought at the time to be a greater danger.
Instead, the pair were only known as unidentified males of Pakistani origin. It was only after the bombings that the connection was made.
Sometimes, timing can be everything.

I think part of the problem is that no one allows them to come forward with anything that is not totally provable. So they don't.
No hunches or gut feelings allowed.
If WWII was prosecuted this way, the world would be a very different place.
The fact that the Muslims all seem to be working their own individual agendas is a problem for counter-terrorism.
It's like having a disease with many different viruses or no known cause. How do you stop it when there is no rhyme or reason to it popping up?

And the SBS TV channel here in Australia was to screen on 9th July ,tne BBC documentary- "the Power of nightmares" which claimed that the threat of terrorist attacks was a figment of our imagination planted by the evil "neocon elites of America".
So they pulled it. How frutrating for them ! But they waited a "respectful period" and screened it anyway.

I think not. However it is unlikely that she would have not included the possibility of "Home Grown" terrorists in her equations.

Eliza was quite correct - there was no credible evidence of an imminent attack that MI5 had discovered by the 6th. July, 2005.
In exactly the same way that there was no credible evidence of an imminent attack upon the United States of America available to the American Intelligence services on the 10th. September, 2001.
Had there been credible, easily interpretable evidence available to the services beforehand then the attacks would not have been permitted to take place.
Intelligence services, just like all the other public services such as the police forces and the fire brigades, do their best. Sometimes their best is not good enough to protect all of us all of the time. That is inevitable. It is axiomatic that a planned terrorist attack which succeeds will be one not known about by our Intelligence services. Our Intelligence services have to get lucky every time whereas the terrorist need only be lucky now and again.
Griping and nit-picking about the shortcomings and failures of our Intelligence services with the perfect 20/20 vision of hindsight is profitless unless one can suggest, as Mr. Spencer and the others at JW/DW do, new and improved methods of thinking about the problem, researching the problem and solving the problem.
It is also deeply offensive to see so many of you being rude about the British Honours System - which most of you who are so rude obviously don't understand. She was not a Prime Ministerial crony filling a position at his behest - unlike some of the positions in the USA which the President fills with his cronies!

By-the-way, there is a difference between 'honours' and 'peerages'. It seems that some here have got the two confused.
Eliza was awarded an 'honour'. She did nor inherit a Knighthood, Title or Peerage.
Anyway, one does not judge the quality of a man or woman by what they may or may not have inherited - wealth, land or titles - but the quality of their minds. After all, Sir Winston Churchill was an aristocrat born and bred yet none here would deny, surely, his supreme achievments.

You have hit the nail on the head, and said exactly what I was thinking of saying. I'm just getting a tiny bit impatient with the knee-jerk reactions and not-so-thinly-veiled anti-Britishness of many of the posters on this site.
