JALALABAD, Afghanistan - Insurgents torched a newly built school for refugee children in eastern Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday, in the first such attack in 2007 blamed on Taleban militants.
There was a spate of similar attacks last year on schools and teachers that were mostly blamed on Taleban rebels conducting an insurgency to overthrow the government and expel foreign troops trying to bring stability.
Indeed, it's a matter of Taliban policy, from a recently issued set of rules for the group's jihadists, to send a warning to schools and their personnel, followed by beatings and death. If they're following the playbook, this incident might be the "warning."
The school set alight Monday night in the eastern province of Nangarhar near the border with Pakistan was made up of tents from the UN children’s fund, UNICEF, provincial spokesman Hazrat Hussain said.
‘Five tents of a new UNICEF-built school were burned down last night in Behsud district,’ he told AFP.
Hussain blamed the attack on the ‘enemies of Afghanistan’, a term often used by Afghan officials to refer to the Taleban movement ousted from government in late 2001.
Gul Pacha Khalizay, the deputy education director of the province, said about 200 boys and girls from a nearby refugee camp used the primary school.

Education minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar said in August that suspected Taleban had killed at least 41 teachers and students in Afghanistan in the previous 12 months and security concerns forced 208 schools to close.
The same thing is happening to teachers and schools in 3 southern provinces of Thailand. Islamists fear knowledge and inquisitive young minds more than anything because it exposes them as frauds.

People in third world nations are poor, illiterate, diseased and hungry for this reason: their local government and the beliefs in their heads.
Case in Point: Haiti and the Dominican Republic occupy different sides of the same island. Haiti is a denuded garbage dump and is hell on earth to live in while the Dominican Republic has forest reserves and exports cigars and world-class baseball players. Another example: genetically, the people of India and Pakistan are very similar if not directly related. The reason for the growing success of India and the growing balkanization of Pakistan is the difference in belief systems. Islamic beliefs regress, bankrupt and fragment Pakistan while India grows stronger in trading and exchanging knowledge with the free world.
What causes huge disparity in results worldwide? Governance and belief systems. The world will continue to experience cholera, genocide, child starvation, oppression of women and minorities and the rest of the preventable tragedies associated with The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse until the world as a whole demands more from local governments. The scourge that comes out of places like Darfur, Sudan, Tehran, Iran and Pyongyong, North Korea will continue as it always has until leaders and belief systems used to control people are held accountable as the root cause of death and destruction.
If the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a founding document of the United Nations, were to be honored by every regime on Earth we'd have something to be proud of as members of the Human Race.
The UN needs to start enforcing its own standards and removing members not meeting them. Having a seat at the UN should not be a 'right'. A seat and a voice need to be earned through measurable, objective results.
If it isn't in the Koran, it's no good and not worth learning about. That sums up Islamic views on education. That also explains why the vast majority of the ummah is living in poverty. There is no room there for going to school and learning anything...only learning about the Quran is acceptable.
