Almost four fifths of both Arabic and Farsi speakers in the U.S. are non-Muslims: Middle East Christians: Copts, Maronite, Orthodox, Syriac, Assyrian Chaldeans, Mizrahi Jews, Zoroastrians. Add to that native American language specialists and apostate Muslims and you begin to see a pattern of discrimination in our national security agencies: FBI, CIA, DIA, NSA, and others. It is largely a product of moral equivalency ‘blindness’ in the lackluster recruiting efforts of our national security system and intimidation by American Muslim community advocacy groups.The result is that we have a large gap in un-translated intelligence information and a deficit in HUMINT analysis and assessments that has blindfolded development of National Security strategies in the war against radical Islam Jihad in the Middle east and globally. At the forthcoming Intelligence Summit in St. Petersburg, Florida in March 2007, I will be presenting both anecdotal and profile information that indicates the crisis of self delusion and denial of precious linguistic and cultural analysis skills of non-Muslims by U.S. security agencies fully capable of serving in our intelligence establishment as loyal Americans.
I recently sent a letter to U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman Independent Democrat regarding this matter as he is the new Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee. I will shortly be meeting with the Senator’s committee staff to discuss this ‘scandal.’
Walid Phares of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy and prominent member of the expatriate Maronite Christian community has indicated interest in this issue. In an email exchange following his review of the letter, he said:

Political science professor at Boston College, Dennis Hale remarked in an email response:
‘Great idea, good letter….You’ve at last gotten the problem presented to someone who might be able to do something about it.”
I have anecdotes from Persian, Iraqi and Syrian Jews, Coptic and Maronite Christians about their less than warn reception upon applying for such positions. My colleague at American Congress for Truth Brigitte Gabriel, bestselling author of Because They Hate, applied for a translator position immediately following 9/11 -- and while conversant in several Arabic dialects, Hebrew, English and French, was rebuffed!
Here are excerpts from my letter to Senator Lieberman’s key staff about the matter seeking their cooperation in getting the facts straight and laying out an agenda for collection of key background information from U.S. security and intelligence agencies.
Given reports in the media about the huge backlog of domestic intercepts of telephone calls by the FBI and other U.S. intelligence agencies of targeted parties of interest, there is many of us believe a need for an appropriate inquiry into the subject of why the intelligence and homeland security community haven’t done more to enlist such valuable talent to assist in these important security investigations.One glaring example of the conundrum of the lack of qualified Arabic translators was a New York Times story in its Faith and war series by Times staffer Andrea Elliot entitled ‘From Head Scarf to Army Cap” in the December 15, 2006 edition, about recruitment of a Jordanian Muslim woman by the U.S. Army to be given citizenship under an accelerated Logan Act program to become a qualified Arabic translator.
As a former U.S. Army intelligence officer with contacts in the Military Intelligence community engaged in Middle East language translation and intelligence analysis, I have received anecdotal information corroborating current practices and the enormity of the deficit of trained linguists and analysts.
In furtherance of my own investigations that may be of interest to the Senator and the Homeland security staff, I have annexed an agenda containing information requests that might under the committee’s auspices be sent to U.S. and domestic intelligence agencies for their response. The information derived from the security agencies responses may be revelatory as regards possible hearings on the topic and administrative actions to acquire qualified personnel to provide language translation and analysis capabilities to fill an enormous and important task to assure this country’s Homeland Security.
I’m sure that the Senator, who has just returned from a trip to the Middle East, is acutely sensitive to the issue of more valid intelligence and information upon which to base development of the nation’s domestic and international security agenda, policies and programs. This topic should be of interest to both he and the Homeland Committee staff and members.

The first paragraph of this article is confusing! Although it says 80% of Arabic/Farsi speakers in the US are not Muslim, it fails to point out that they are rejected by the security establishment as translators. You have to read quite away into the article before you understand this simple fact. Surely, as drawing attention to this fact is the whole purpose of the article this fact should be made clear in the first paragraph if not the first sentence!

This issue has had some publicity over the past several years. Isn't a big part of the problem that the Muslim translators, already in place in these agencies and many with Islamist sympathies, find reasons to get rid of any newer, non-Muslim translators? I agree...it is a problem that needs to be explored but I bet investigations will be met with thick stone-walls at all of these mentioned agencies. They don't have the manpower to do the translating, but they will have the staff to present evidence contrary to Mr. Gordon's assertions.

I understand that Osama is conversant in both English and Arabic. The FBI, CIA and others may be interested in hiring him.
I'll bet if a Muslim applies for a translator job there's no problem (it doesn't hurt to have the specter of CAIR behind you) with hiring. It MIGHT mean nothing, but I would be fearful about things "accidently" being incorrectly translated-especially since the peaceful ones always indicate how their precious texts are always misinterpreted by "extremists".
One week after September 11, Claire Berlinski wrote an article for the Weekly Standard entitled, "English only Spoken Here?" I would suggest anyone who is as bothered by this as I am read this article because it is worse than we can imagine.
The situation in the universities is not much better, if you were to even think about studying Arabic and Persian.
Not to get overly worried, however. ANYONE can learn a language on his own, as did one Montana judge, no less a woman. She was able to be her own spy agency, with newly acquired language skills, and she simply monitored the internet jihad sites....a middle aged woman can acquire enough language to be useful in the security of her country...perhaps it is time to rethink the training of agents.
Also, the military, the mother of all expedient inventions borne of necessity, has developed two very interesting language programs for their personnel - and they are readily available to the public for a reasonable price....and these programs are a miniscule fraction of what you would get at Middlebury College...and without the PC indoctrination.

At Franklin and Marshall College, (prestigious is its middle name) there is a department of International Studies...and they don't even teach one middle eastern language! However, they do teach courses which lay the blame for all the world's problems at America's doors...what is new?
And they do manage to teach Japanese.
If I wanted to take a course in Arabic, elementary Arabic, no depth at all, I could plop $130 down + books, at the Harrisburg Community College and get a rudimentary course in Arabic...and possible Islamic Sympathies Studies Indoctrination...but I can't get the same at F&M College.....heh.
I've often wondered whether the United States was adequately exploiting its Middle Eastern immigrant community for its language skills. I would certainly be interested in seeing better evidence than the article provides for discrimination against non-Muslims who offer these skills to our nation. As far as I'm concerned, military and intelligence agencies should be actively recruiting at Coptic and Maronite churches. Second generation Americans often keep their parents' language and should not be overlooked.

This article is extremely confusing! I read it several times and my final conclusion is that the U.S. government is and has been depending solely on muslim translators to translate everything emanating from global islamic jihadist/terrorist networks and the demented islamic netherworld. Furthermore, the U.S. government appears to be of the opinion that only muslims are qualified for this work, and muslims discourage the hiring of non-muslim translators. Gee, I wonder why muslims wouldn't want non-muslim translators. Somebody please tell me I read the whole thing wrong, please!
I will sleep much better tonight knowing that muslims are in control of our national security. Why do we even bother with translations? If we are going to hire our enemies to work in the most sensitive and crucial areas of national security, what's the point?! We might as well resign ourselves to eventual doom because the idiots in charge are worse than incompetent; they are more concerned about political correctness than in performing their duties to this country. This is like something out of a bad spy novel. God help us all.
